Designers have come up with an impressive prototype which could become Shenzhen’s future architectural landmark, focusing on both aesthetics and sustainability.
As part of a competition aiming at developing a modern commercial area in Shenzhen Bay, China, a team of designer has come up with an impressive architectural prototype mixing both sustainability and refined aesthetics. Towering 680 meters, the Cloud Citizen Project would be one of the highest skyscrapers in the world, seconding only Dubai’s Burj Khalifa and its 828 meters. Besides this vertiginous height, this futuristic and one-of-a-kind structure would give space to more than 150,000 square meters.
Nevertheless, what really enables the Cloud Citizen Project to stand out from today’s most iconic towers is its strong commitment to eco-friendliness. Indeed, both solar and wind power are used to provide the necessary energy to the structure, and rainwater harvesting systems will ensure water is used efficiently. This building would be divided into several different areas – including leisure, commercial, cultural activities, as well as the IT-industry – which would all be linked together thanks to a large park enabling people to take a relaxing walk.
Even though this design is only in its project phase and no plan for the future has been revealed so far, such a construction would be a huge step in a more sustainable direction in China, where many environmental issues have become urgent problems to tackle. As an illustration, almost 90 percent of the country’s big cities did not manage to comply with the air quality standards in the past year according to the local Ministry of Environment. As a result, it is estimated that around 4,000 people die because of air pollution every day.
The Cloud Citizen Project is one of many examples showing that a trade-off does not necessarily exist between large constructions and eco-friendliness.
