The Frankfurt Motor Show is the Mecca of the automotive sector, gathering fans from all around the world. Consequently, this is the perfect occasion for car manufacturers to make use of their imagination and creativity to impress the crowd and benefit from strong media coverage. Whereas some brands use thid event to introduce their new series to the whole world, others will aim at stealing the show with out-of-the-box ideas. This year, sports brands have been at the center of people’s attention with some uncompromisingly sporty vehicles. Here are our five favorite.
Home gig: Porsche Mission E Concept and Mercedes Concept IAA create the buzz
For German manufacturers, shining at Frankfurt is a must. Therefore, it should come as no surprise to see Porsche and Mercedes literally stealing the show with two groundbreaking concept cars. The Stuttgart-based auto manufacturer has addressed a clear message to its fan: the future is likely to be electric. Porsche – which is already manufacturing hybrid supercars – has already caught the attention of millions of people all around the world with its futuristic Mission E Concept, an all-electric supercar which could become Tesla’s main competitor in the near future. On top of high performance matching Porsche’s standards, the battery of its 800-Volts drive system can be charged to 80 percent in less than 15 minutes, and would allow the car to cover a distance of around 400 kilometers. Not that bad!\
Mercedes’ IAA (Intelligent Aerodynamic Automobile) is also relying on electricity thanks to its hybrid engine. Nevertheless, this concept has caught the headlights for another reason: its unmatched aerodynamics. Concretely, its drag co-efficient is as low as Cd 0.19, even better than the Mercedes CLA – the record holder when it was launched back in 2013 – and its Cd 0.22.
Bugatti Vision Grand Turismo: successor of the Veyron ?
To be fair, the Vision Grand Turismo is firstly built to entertain. Indeed, this aggressive supercar has been developed to race in … Grand Turismo 6, one of the most renowned Playstation video game. Nevertheless, the Bugatti Vision is probably more than a virtual car. Indeed, the manufacturer has implied that its uncompromising design could potentially be used for the Bugatti Veyron’s successor. Such a car would certainly easily overtake the 1,000 horsepower mark and become one of the fastest car in the world, as is currently the case with the Veyron.
Sport and Chic: Bentley Bentayga as the fastest production SUV in the world
Whereas Porsche, Mercedes and Bugatti prototypes are unlikely to be produced as such in the near future, the luxurious British manufacturer Bentley has officially unveiled its latest vehicle. And what a vehicle that is! With its W12 releasing 600 horsepower, the Bentayga is no less than the fastest production SUV ever produced. Concretely, its fantastic mechanics enables it to reach 100 kilometers per hour in four seconds, and reach a top speed of 300 kilometers per hour. Obviously, these unmatched performances come at a price, as the price tag amounts to USD 229,100.
The newcomer: Thunder Power Sedan
Among all these renowned established car manufacturers, Thunder Power is probably the biggest surprise of Frankfurt 2015. Indeed, the Taiwanese electronics manufacturer – previously unknown outside its country – has displayed a buzzing all-electric vehicle available in two different configurations. Whereas the lighter version will be equipped with a 230 kW engine releasing 308 horsepower, a more sport-oriented series will host as much as 428 horsepower. Furthermore, the construction has announced electrifying performances, with the more powerful of these two cars reaching 100 kilometers per hour in less than five seconds. Thunder power is expecting to firstly launch its series in Europe in 2017. Only time will tell whether this newcomer in the industry will become a major player in the electric car segment.
