3D printing isn’t a myth anymore. Nowadays 3D printers are not only quite cheap to produce, but as experts predict, in near future such printers will very common to find almost at every house. 3D printers are used to create things for everyday use all along with objects that are used in manufacturing.
Normally 3D printers are used to create small objects, because the print area is limited. But what if you want to print a large-scale object? There is a way out. Let`s see what MX3D, Dutch design company, did. They just got rid of the printing box entirely. What did they use instead? They`ve developed robotic arms tipped with welders to 3D print a metal bridge over a canal in Amsterdam. Specialized software makes it possible to print metal or plastic in the mid-air without the help of any support structures. These “arms” are moving across the canal as it slides along the bridge`s edges and printing its own support structure out of nowhere. MX3D designers using their own software to operate these machines, so they can print even very complex metal shapes. Unlike any other 3D printers MX3D robots can print in any directions. Printing a life-sized metal bridge is a best advertisement to the technology they had created.
This bridge is to be completed in 2017. It will be 24 feet long. Due to steel composite, used for construction, this 3D printed bridge will be as strong as any other bridge and can handle a large amount of traffic. Bridge`s design allows it to perfectly fit into Amsterdam`s city aesthetic.
3D printing has finally entered the world of large-scale objects. Maybe in near future we can see 3D printers building bridges for tarins and cars, but for now Amsterdam is the only place where you ca see such a wonder.
