Copper Powers Green Transportation that Leads to Progressive Economic Impacts

In today’s society, transportation methods are finding ways to make altercations to manufacturing processes in order to become more sustainable and reduce their environmental footprint. Back in 1948, the average family car contained only 55 copper wires, amounting to a length of 150 feet. For example, the Toyota Prius, a full hybrid electronic mid-size hatchback, relies on copper wiring to power its nickel based batteries as well as computer chips to power the car and cut carbon emissions. 5 of the World’s Oldest Breweries

Copper plays a pivotal role in the brewing process. One of the most recognizable pieces of equipment at a brewery the  huge copper tanks where various flavors are added to the wheat and made into different types of beer. Whether you prefer your drink fruity or bitter, hoppy, or bitter, the related tastes are added in the copper kettles. Copper is used over other types of metals because it has the highest heat conductivity and is relatively inert to both beer and wort (don’t worry you will know what that means by the end of this article). First, we will take a deeper look into the brewing process, then take a look at some of the oldest breweries around the world that utilize copper kettles.

The brewing process consists of several steps including malting, mashing, lautering, boiling fermenting, conditioning, filtering, and packaging. Malting, the first step is the preparation stage to get the barley grain read for brewing. Mashing coverts the starches released during the malting stage into sugar that can be fermented. Grain and water are mixed together creating a cereal mash. From there, the mash is broken down into simple sugars creating a sugar rich liquid or “wort” which is strained through the bottom of the mash during the lautering stage. The wort is moved into large tanks knock as a “copper” or kettle where it is boiled with hops and sometimes other ingredients, such as herbs or sugars, are added to make the beer more flavorful. This stage is critical, many chemical and technical reactions take place and where crucial decisions are made about flavor, color, and aroma. Once complete, the hopped wort settles and clarifies in a vessel called a “whirlpool”, where particles in the wort are separated. Next, the liquid moves to a heat exchanger where it is quickly cooled to a temperature where yeast can be added and transferred into the fermentation tank. When fermentation is complete, the brewer may move the beer to a conditioning tank where it can age to be smoother and fuller in flavor. Finally, the beer is ready for bottling and is available to be served worldwide.

American Copper Theft Continues to Create Trouble for Cities Across the Nation

As the United States slowly creeps out of the recession caused by the 2008 housing crisis, construction of new buildings has still been lagging. Bloomberg reports that less construction along with reduced consumer spending and industry activity has led to less demolition, which means a shortage of scrap, or secondhand, building materials. With low levels of copper scrap in the global marketplace, thieves are taking it upon themselves as an opportunity to earn some extra cash. Little do they know that the amount of copper they are trying doesn’t even come close to the thousands of dollars in damages they are doing to communities coast to coast.

  • In Danville, Virginia, two thieves were trying to steal what would amount to $9 or $10 worth of copper by cutting a pipeline at a nearby oil distribution facility. The missing pipeline led to an estimated 2,000 gallon natural gas leak. In the same city a few years prior, four deaths occurred when people were trying to steal less than $20 worth of copper.

    The Bonneville Power Administration, an American federal agency responsible for the Pacific Northwest region, is using a new weapon against thieves after a dozen break in occurred in a six month span resulting in tens of thousands of dollars in damages.

  • Last week in St. Louis, Missouri, tenants in a downtown apartment complex were without water for more than 48 hours after thieves stole copper pipes from the building. Residents complained about unbearable living conditions including mold growth, overflowing trash, and broken elevators. There is known to be handicapped residents living in the apartment unable to leave without operating elevators.
  • The biggest copper heist in Utah history occurred last year when thieves managed to steal more than six miles worth of wire off a Salt Lake City highway. The criminals disgusted themselves as construction workers. The missing copper led to a power outages along a mile of the highway and cost the city nearly $60,000 to replace the stolen materials.

Winners of 2014 North American Copper in Architecture Awards

Every year, the Copper Development Association recognizes and promotes projects for their outstanding use of architectural copper and copper alloys by presenting the North American Copper in Architecture Awards. Since civilization, copper has been used because of its beautiful finish, durability, performance, long life, and recyclability. Past winners have included schools, libraries, places of worship, performing arts centers, recreational facilities, museums, and residential and municipal buildings. Applications in design include wall cladding, architectural accents, roofing, interior design and ornamental purposes. There are three categories for nomination: restoration and renovation, new construction, and interiors and ornamental design. Each project is judged on its sustainable practices, copper system design, integration of copper alloys, craftsmanship, and innovation and historical restoration. In order to be considered for an award each submission must meet three criteria: made in the past three years with substantial amount of copper, located in the United States or Canada, and the copper manufacturer must be a North American company. Artistic Copper Refurbishment Reinvigorates Maine’s State House Dome

10036381_H13320675-600x450Workers at the Maine’s State House Dome are currently part way through a $1.3 million process of having its old, leaking, green, oxidized Copper dome replaced with a shiny brand new one. As work continues to replace the 7,000 square feet worth of Copper atop the State House which is more than 100 years old, lawmakers on the Legislative Council have accepted a plan to sell much of the metal to artists and craftsmen as a way to preserve and maintain the metal’s iconic and cultural value. Originally plans were to sell the old Copper roof as scrap metal to help fund the refurbishment, approximately $12,000 was expected to be raised upon recycling depending on the ebb and flow of Copper spot market prices.

dome4aHowever, a more thoughtful proposal of re-purposing the oxidized Copper as raw materials for local artists to turn in to sculptures, jewelry and other art pieces was made and the Legislative Council have given their nod of approval. “Any time you can incorporate Maine artists into a historically significant project, and potentially employ Maine artists, that’s a good thing,” said Julie Richard, the Maine Arts Commission’s executive director.

This new repurposing proposal has five core elements that will help determine where the old copper will end up.

dome1aFirstly, some of it will be melted down and recast into commemorative collectables and keepsakes such as coins and medallions which will be sold or distributed to the public. Small workable sheets will be sold to local jewelers and artisans to be remade into various jewelries, Current market value for oxidized green copper is about $400 for a 1 meter-squared sheet but it will likely be sold for cheaper than that. A portion of the material would be given or sold well below market value to Maine sculptors or educational institutions for use in creating 3-D works that may be sold or used for educational purposes. Some is hoped to turned into new public art commission for the State Capitol Complex in Maine. Finally, pieces that are not intact enough to be repurposed into anything will be recycled as scrap and the proceeds used to help fund future projects of the Maine Arts Commission.

The restoration project is expected to be finished by October this year.

South Australia Set To Open The Biggest Australian Copper Mine In The Country

prominent-hill-copper-and-gold-mine-thiess-graduates-595x275Two Australian mining companies Rex Minerals and BHP Billiton have been green lit by the State Government to begin extraction from what is believed to be Australia’s biggest ever unexploited Copper deposit. It is estimated to hold approximately $1 trillion worth of extractable Copper at Hillside on the Yorke Peninsula approximately one hour North-West of Adelaide, South Australia.

Rex Minerals made a statement on Tuesday that it had received a formal offer for mineral tenements for its $919m Hillside copper project. Simultaneously, BHP Billiton announced that they are in the testing stages of a new and cheaper Copper extraction technique called ‘Heap Leaching’ at its huge Olympic Dam site also in South Australia.  BHP hopes they will win over the Hillside government mining and extraction tenements against Rex Minerals with a demonstration plant, showcasing how cheap and efficient their new ‘Heap Leaching’ process really is.

sa-mapSouth Australia’s state treasurer, Tom Koutsantonis, commented that the mining leases hinged on a collection of conditions mainly to do with striking a balance between environmental, community and economic costs and benefits to the area. Many local farmers and residents in the Hillside area have expressed alarm that the massive Copper extraction project poses a real threat to water-table contamination affecting irrigation, wind-blown dust smothering crops and affecting air quality, as well as radiation problems. However, both Rex Mineral and BHP are in the process of consulting geo-scientists and local community members to devise a viable environmental feasibility study that meets both the environmental and economic priorities of the area.

Dispute Resolution Moves To Stabilize World Copper Prices via Indonesia

Indo CopperAccording to the London Metal Exchange on Monday 28th July 2014 world Copper prices appear to have stabilized despite rising global demand putting inflationary pressures on the price. This is a direct result of the American natural resource company Freeport-McMoRan who has an industry leading global portfolio in mineral assets, significant oil and gas resources and a growing production profile. Yesterday Freeport was able to settle a six month long tax dispute with the Indonesian government, allowing for the resumption of Copper exports from major Indonesian mines such as in the Grasberg mineral region in West Papua (containing approximately 35.6 billion pounds of Copper) to key global Copper consuming nations such as China and India. Freeport-McMoRan is expected to export approximately 756,000 tonnes of Copper in the second half of 2014.

Settlement of this on-going tax dispute has doused the predominately bullish global Copper market in cold water despite sturdy factory growth in both China and the Euro-zone strengthening the overall world demand for Copper ore throughout the month of July. Additionally, economic data from Beijing has confirmed that the Chinese economy has weathered the economically choppy first half of 2014 and is expected to return to calmer waters where economic growth and expansion can really regain traction. This emphasizes that the Copper industry is finally solidifying its expected movement away from a demand-basis and more toward supply-surplus, ultimately stabilizing the previous up-and-down nature of world Copper prices throughout the first half of 2014.

This is particularly so on the back of the news of Indonesia re-initiating their exports to major international Copper consumers such as China via Freeport-McMoRan.

Peru Set to Explode with Copper Extraction

Peru is re-positioning themselves to catapult in front of China to take back second place in the title race for the largest Copper extraction nation in the world. Second only to Chile who produce a whopping 5.8 million tonnes of Copper annually, Peru is set to ramp up their annual Copper output capabilities by approximately double from 1.4 million tonnes in 2013, to 2.8 million tonnes before the beginning of 2016.

The expected green lights on five core Peruvian Copper mining projects underpin this massive growth aspirations and development of the Copper industry in Peru. These projects include; the US$4.6 billion expansion venture of the Cerro Verde’s which is expected to finish up at the beginning of 2016, Southern Copper’s controversial US$1 billion expansion of the Tia Maria mine which had been on hold since 2011 due to community concern for the inadequately proposed water usage and pollution management strategies has resolved these issues through a revisal of environmental management strategies which are expected to gain local approval soon, the US$3.5 billion Toromocho mine which opened last December, US$900 million expansion of Toquepala mine,  and the Chinese owned and led US$5.86 billion Las Bambas mine which is expected to shift it’s Copper output upwards from 1.3 million tonnes in 2013 to 2.8 million tonnes before 2016.

However recent events such as slowing Chinese housing growth and the Qing Dao collateral scandal have encouraged a cooling of Copper demand in China, forcing a slump in global Copper prices. Provided these current events do not have lasting effects over the next eighteen months, Peruvian Copper production levels can be expected to continue to close the gap between the Copper extraction market leaders in Chile.

Major Copper Discovery on the Pacific Rim

kennecott_mineDome Gold Mines has made what they believe to be a major raw Copper ore discovery on the outer edge of the Pacific Rim in Fiji at a prospecting project in the South Western province of Viti Levu. The Copper mineralization outcrop was stumbled upon during routine fieldwork while prospecting for Gold on Fiji’s main island. Follow-up investigations involving geological mapping and surveying as well as rock-chip geo-chemical sampling confirmed that the discovery was high quality porphyry-style Copper.

In the past there has been prior historical investigative drilling and prospecting efforts, but they only ever returned findings of low quality Copper deposits that were not worth the investment or effort to extract and refine. However, it is believed that these past drilling incorrectly calculated where the major Copper veins were located in the area, completely missing the target. This has re-opened the entire area up to more thorough drilling and investigations into the potential range and quality level of the minerals sitting below the surface of the South-Western Fijian soil.

Additionally, in a more global sense, the believed large magnitude of the Viti Levu Copper discovery could potentially decrease or at least stabilize the price of Copper ore in the South East Asia and Pacific Rim region, however only more thorough geological and geochemical investigations will solidify this for sure.

China’s South American Copper Investments Set to Pay Dividends
