Just As Useful Today As It Was Back Then

Household aluminum foil has been a staple for commercial kitchens and the consumer market for decades.  It has been capping casserole dishes and wrapping brownies for nearly 100 years.  So for those cooking fanatics out there, we all know that you can’t have a good meal without savoring the taste and texture.

Household aluminum foil is widely sold in the consumer market and is used for wrapping food in order to preserve it.  For example, when storing leftover food in a refrigerator, it serves the additional purpose of preventing odor exchange and retaining moisture.  Therefore making it ideal for protecting food during cooking and storage.

Whether it’s used for barbecuing delicate foods, such as mushrooms and vegetables, food is wrapped in foil then placed on the grill, preventing loss of moister that may result in less texture.  This process is due to the thermal insulation that allows excellent heat conductivity to withstand the highest temperatures encountered when cooking.

The economic impact of the aluminum industry has driven economic impact as it contributed more than $150 billion to the U.S. economy, nearly 1 percent of GDP. Aluminum is one of the few materials that affect every person in the country, and more than 670,000 American jobs are created by the industry.

  • Higher wages in the industry. Workers in the aluminum industry earn, on average, $77,000 a year, much higher than the national average.
  • Recycling produces high-value economic impact. The production of secondary (recycled) aluminum saves more than 90 percent of the energy costs associated with primary production.
  • Job are increasing. This includes work generated in core American manufacturing sectors including primary, secondary, smelting and alloy production.
  • Fundamental economic impact is created. The aluminum industry contributes more than $152 billion in gross domestic product.

Steel Use In The World Cup Stadiums

If you’re a football (fútbol) fan, you know it’s not just a game – it’s a way of life. This summer, the 2014 FIFA World Cup has literately taken Brazil by storm.  Spread across from coast to coast and the heart of Brazil, thirty two countries were unified under one roof.

“The FIFA World Cup being held in such a multi-cultural society is bound to bring people together. There are no differences in football; social classes don’t exist.”

FIFA President Joseph S. Blatter quotes that such an event will only bring people together from around the world.  Brazil 2014 will involve thirty two teams and twelve host cities across the five regions of Brazil, featuring modern stadiums which have been built or renovated for the tournament.  They represent the jewel in the crown of the respective cities.

Whether  it is the main structure or supporting roofing and facades, steel was  the material of choice for all newly build or renovated venues due to its strength, versatility and aesthetical advantages.

China Steels The Show

Since the end of the 21st century China has become by far the largest steel producer in the world.  Steel production  has been growing nearly 10% per year in China, 6% in India and over 3% in Brazil.

Due to infrastructure projects in the construction industry, China has secured its dominant position in the world for steel production.  Many of China’s bridges are made from steel material so when it comes to records, China holds the three top ranking spots in the world for arch bridges.

Chaotianmen Bridge
Chaotianmen Bridge

The Chaotianmen Bridge spans over the Yangtze River in the city of Chongquing, China.  The steel truss arch spans 552 meters and reflects the achievements in modern industry, strength, and structural beauty. The bridge was opened in 2009 and is the world’s largest arch bridge.

Lupu Bridge
Lupu Bridge

Shanghai has become a symbol of the recent economic boom in China.  One of Shanghai’s own Lupu Bridge ranks second in the worlds longest arch bridges at 550 meters. The three-span steel arch bridge crosses the Huangpu River connecting the city’s Luwan and Pudong districts.

Bosideng Bridge
Bosideng Bridge

Opened in 2012, the Bosideng Bridge is the third largest arch bridge in the world with a span of 530 meters.  The concrete filled steel tubular arch bridge is a highway bridge that crosses over the Yangtze River in Hejiang County, Sichuan, China.

There is no doubt that China takes the market in steel production.  Chinese steel is known as some of the most durable steel on the market.  Bridges require proper durability in order to stand up to a variety of common building issues such as mold, rot, and weather resistance.

Steel: A Key Driver of The World’s Economy

As the world economy is constantly evolving, our demand for material goods increases along the way.  Steel, the recycled material is one of the top products in the manufacturing sector of the world.  It is a leading supplier in industries such as automotive, construction, transport, power and machine goods.

Steel ElevatorThe steel industry is a booming industry due to the increasing demand of development projects around the world.  The increasing need of steel in developing countries for its infrastructural projects and real estate projects has pushed the companies in this industry near their operative capacity, thus creating strong financial condition in the last decade.

Steel

The main demand of steel industries comes from the construction industry.  With developmental works on the rise in both developed and developing countries, the rise of housing and construction sector is the largest consumer of steel today, using around 50% of world steel production.  Steel Inside

The automotive industry is quickly rising as a potential demand for steel industries because the use of steel in vehicles cause the weight of the same to lesson by almost twenty five percent of the material.  On the technological front, steel is making a rapid improvement with the implementation of cutting-edge technologies.  As we see economies grow around the world, we also see that steel is a key driver of the world’s economy.  Click here to visit Shanghai Metal Corporation’s website.

Steel industry in the global market:

  • Asian countries have dominated the production of steel in the last twenty years.
  • India is also among the one of the fastest growing economies in the world and has been considered to be a potential global steel hub.
  • India, Brazil, South Korea, and Turkey are poised for future production growth and all have entered the top ten producers list in the past 40 years.

Not Just Hollow Cylinders

In the Steel manufacturing industry one often hears terms such as steel pipes or steel tubing.  Most people would just think, they are just hollow cylinders, but what they don’t know is that there are a couple differences between a steel pipe and steel tube.

For instance, a pipe is a vessel and a tube is structural.  The pipe is measured by ID and a tube is measured by OD.  Tubing is more used in structures so the OD is the important number.  The strength of a steel tube depends on the wall thickness.  Therefore, tubing is specified by the diameter and the wall thickness which is often specified as a gauge.  Steel tubes are used in structural applications and will most likely be seam welded.

Pipes are normally used to transport gases or fluids so it is important to know the capacity of the pipe.  The internal cross-sectional area (ID) is important because it measures the inside diameter of the pipe.  Since the outside diameter of a single nominal pipe size is kept constant, the inside diameter of a pipe will depend on the “schedule” or the thickness.  The actual thickness of a pipe varies with the size of the pipe.  The size usage of pipes apply to all plumbing, natural gas, heating oil, and other piping use in building construction.

So in the manufacturing industry, the tolerance of pipes are looser compared with tubes and they are often less expensive to produce. Tubes on the other hand have a higher tolerance,  therefore are often more expensive to produce than pipes.

Remember, a hollow cylinder has 3 important dimensions:

  • The outside diameter (OD)
  • The inside diamter (ID)
  • The wall thickness (WT)

One Intern Can Make a Difference

KennCombreFace

They say a company’s employees are its greatest asset.  It starts from the bottom of the organization all the way up to the CEO.  If employees feel they are on the outside looking in – so far outside that they refer to their company as “they” – then who’s to blame?  Managers and executives may be investing no effort in making employees feel like valued insiders.  Well, that is not the case at Shanghai Metal Corporation (SMC).  SMC believes in their own company’s success by providing the best and valuable experience to its employees.

Meet Kenn Crombé, a native Belgium born citizen who spent his spring term working at SMC for an international-trade internship.  Since the time Kenn has spent at SMC, he has reinforced the work culture and the relationships with his colleagues.  He allowed himself to connect and be open to everyone’s opinions and values, redefining the line between cultural differences.  He was the person that anyone could talk to and he made sure that cultural differences, such as language never hindered a conversation.  Even as a native Dutch and English speaker, he took the time to learn Mandarin and his effort justified his true value for the company’s internal relationships.

Kenn&Brian2Even at the internship level, Kenn valued his work and his interest in learning about shipping and housing containers.  Kenn would spend his mornings reading at least twenty articles a day about his product.  He valued his product so much that he created marketing campaigns that were not only visionary but personable.  He believed in customer satisfaction and that every customer was a priority, not just another number.  His efforts were nothing short of expectation.  He demonstrated great work ethic, enthusiasm, and the determination to gain more knowledge every day.

To show our appreciation for all of Kenn’s hard work, SMC planned a surprise going away party for the international intern.  Bryan Wang, the CEO of SMC made sure that everyone was in attendance at this special event.  Tables were set up flourished with goodies and drinks all over the room.  Kenn stopped by the office one last time but to his surprise, everyone was gathered together for one purpose – to celebrate a special person who brought a company together. HeyJudebryan&arthurHM

Among his peers, Kenn was still in shock of what was going on.  He was beyond speechless that he could not fully comprehend everyone’s effort to execute such an event.  His speech was short and sweet but made sure he thanked all his colleagues and a special thank you to Bryan.  A slideshow of his time at SMC was presented and everyone enjoyed the photos of the company trip to the Huangshan Mountains.  Karaoke was the biggest hit at the party and as the man of the hour, Kenn sang to “Hey Jude” with a few of his colleagues.  Everyone laughed, sang, and enjoyed each other’s company as it was a bitter sweet ending to an impeccable internship opportunity.

The simple truth is that in order to succeed, organizations must establish unyielding internal and external relationships.  The value of one intern can change the dynamic of a work culture.  The importance of having employees that matter is what makes or breaks a company.  SMC is very thankful to have had Kenn Crombé as part of our team.

Slip-Resistant Solutions

Falling is no option.  Steel Chequered Plates, also known as Diamond plate is designed to resist skidding and slipping in any direction and makes possible safer and faster movement of people.  Also referred to as floor or tread plate, diamond plate is a type of lightweight material that is usually made of steel, stainless steel, or aluminum.  The name comes from the fact that a raised diamond pattern is present on the surface of the metal.

steelstairs

A majority of diamond plates are created through a hot rolling process, where sheets of steel or aluminum are pressed through two rollers that compress the metal.  The added texture reduces the risk of slipping making diamond plate a solution for trench covers, platforms, stair landings, stair treads, walkways, and ramps.

Diamond plate is widely used in shipbuilding, automobile, tractor, rail car, and the building industry.    To learn more about SMC’s diamond plate products, click here.
