The Tree of Life – Milan 2015 Expo Steel Symbol

We have already discussed about the upcoming 2015 Expo taking place in Milan, Italy, in less than two months. As you know is a very important event, not just for the European peninsula, but also for all the participant countries willing to promote their products. This year’s theme is “Feeding the Planet. Energy for Life”. It will be very difficult for Italy to beat the success of the Chinese 2010 Expo edition, although the theme seems very interesting. If you visited Shanghai during the Universal Exposition or after 2010, you have probably visited the Chinese pavilion. Indeed, this great piece of architectural art has been the main symbol of the Shanghainese exhibition and it has rapidly became one of the main tourist attractions of the city.

The Chinese pavillion is a 63 meters high structure inspired by the most important element of the building tradition of China: the dougong system dating back over 2000 years. It consists of wooden beams embedded in overlapping layers on a base of columns. (from IlGiornaledell’Architettura)

But what about Milan? What will be the symbol of the next Expo made in Italy? The Tree of Life. It came to light in early March, erected in the center of the Expo Lake Arena. According to L’Eco di Bergamo,  the project of  the tree was inspired both by the mosaic of the Otranto Cathedral and the floor of Piazza del Campidoglio designed by Michelangelo, of which is a 3D version. Its creator, Marco Balich, explained that the tree is a symbol common to “all cultures, from the Bible to Avatar”.

The tree has a steel structure made of 150 tons of metal, around which a wooden part was built (90 tons of wood), which will then be adorned with several plants and lights. This 35 meters high installation of steel and wood (and 45 meters of diameter) will be the highest structure of the 2015 Expo. Moreover, the tree will host one show per hour admired by 3000 people each time sitting on the arena built around the Expo lake.

In sum, the symbol of the upcoming Milan Expo 2015 is made of steel. A futuristic steel tree!

The Quik House Container

Adam Kalkin is ‘an artist, an architect and many other things’. Among these other things Kalkin is also the creator of a project called Quik House. By assembling recycled shipping containers, this architect has developed the idea of a prefabricated kit house.

Untitled design
from http://www.prefabs.com and http://www.quik-build.com

Here is what Kalkin has stated about his mission when interviewed by the CNN.

home-feature
from vq.vassar.edu

I use architecture as a vehicle for experimentation and discovering. The container is a proper skill object. When you recontextualize It, putting it in a residential context-use it for architecture proper, you both destroy the original context and create a new context. This is a form of upcycling […]. You get a beautiful dialogue from the old and the new and between one set of ideas and another and it creates a certain kind of vitality which really resonates with me.

The project seems to meet three main expectations of today’s market. First, the coast. The price of the Quik House is very low compared to traditional houses. According to the Quik House website the estimated finishing cost for a basic Quik House composed by 6 modified shipping containers is around $184,000 (plus shipping). Second, a modern and unique design. For instance, customers could ask for local graffiti artists to decorate their new house. Third, eco-friendship. The use of second hand containers guarantees the involvement of Kalkin’s company in the recycling process which has a very positive impact on environment protection.

Hot dip galvanized steel sculpture brings art to the next level

Can art be protected? In an environment which is constantly changing is there a reason to create long-lasting art pieces?

Melbourne born artist Damian Vick proves art can be built in a sustainable manner. Damian Vick has created an intricate vivid sculpture named The Moment, which purpose is to adorn an apartment building in Melbourne’s premier arts district.

Due to the external placement of the sculpture a special coating has been selected in order to avoid corrosion and in due course destruction. The sculpture benefits from a hot dip galvanizing HDG-based duplex system which in that case ensures design preservation. Moreover, applying HDG finish proves to be cost effective. The duplex system for this sculpture, consisting of a base hot dip galvanized layer and two top coats, cost around one-fifth of a three coat paint system to provide equivalent protection. The precise process of crafting the sculpture results in an outstanding artistic finish.

The Moment

The outcome is a prominent hot dip galvanized and painted piece 7 meters in diameter and 2.4 meters deep, permanently installed 5 meters above ground. Primarily created from 3mm mild steel and mounted on an angle frame, the installation weighs three tones.

The Moment is considered to be the most noteworthy work of Mr. Vick’s up till now. Hence, he was obliged to guarantee the great longevity of both the structure and the finish.

560313_555936901092817_72449084_nThe design of the sculpture is rather elaborate which compels the artist to construct it from 49 single sections while each piece is being hot deep galvanized. The purpose of hot dip galvanized coating under the aesthetic paint is to ensure is that steel substrate will not corrode and stain the work with unpleasant rust staining.

Innovation processes in the creative industry matter. The Moment is an example of how durability can be obtained in a sustainable way while not compromising the aesthetic value of the sculpture.

Wonderful Chain Art

Metals are everywhere around us and sometimes you don’t even notice that an object next to you is made out of steel, copper or aluminum. For example a simple metal chain doesn’t have to serve just for securing your bike against the railing. Why am I mentioning a chain? Well let’s sit comfortably and have a look.

Urban art has many interesting variations. Here, artists used their imagination and metalworking skills to create something really extra-ordinary. By using CHAINS!

via weburbanist

I am a bit curious who would wear shoes with chain higheels, it seems almost impossible to walk with that.

Everyday urban landscapes may seem shady that’s why artists accentuate the beauty of these places to make the environment nicer to people.

via weburbanist

Fashion designers also got inspired by chains and implemented it into their urban fashion style. Many of you probably don’t approve it but at least they stepped out of mainstream and created something unusual.

via weburbanist

Not only fashion but also furniture can be created with chains. These kind of chairs, sofas or tables will lighten your house and bring unique style.

This urban style is not for everyone but if you like it you could visit our website to see what metal products we offer. Shanghai Metal Corporation offers good quality and a quick service. The Stained Glass Industry Needs Copper Foil

The art of stained glass as existed since the Antiquity. One of the most famous and ancient usage of copper for artistic glass was done by the Egyptian. The glass craftsmen of Ancient Egypt use copper to give a bright and beautiful green and blue tone to the pieces.

During the 19th and 20th century that copper was added to the work pieces of religious glass art.  To obtain a dark red, crimson like effect very high concentrated copper was including in the glass staining process. This process allowed the early Christian glass stained craftsmen to perform their art in order to create the masterpieces of their time.

Nowadays, artisans, artists and craftsmen of stained glass use a different kind of copper to embellish their pieces. Copper foil tape is now applied directly to the glass, allowing artists to get more flexibility in the shape and taint of the material. Indeed, by changing the chemical composition of the alloy, the copper’s color can go from a pale grayish tone to a dark crimson red.

As an international manufacturer and supplier for copper foil and copper foil tape, Shanghai Metal Corporation produces its products to fit your specific copper requirements. To find out more, please visit our Website or send your inquiry here. Knives, forks and spoons can be piece of art

Knives, forks, spoons, all of the utensils made of stainless steel are used not only in the kitchen. An amazing art can be done with that and here are some nice examples!

“Life is beautiful”

gepportraithd08Farhad Moshiri, an Iranian artist, formed the installation entirely from kitchen knives. These knives are stabbed into the wall as he wanted to show how household items can serve as deadly weapons. Visitors could speculate about the history or future use of those knives, whether they are recycled or will be used once more to chop some fruits or vegetables. It is a provoking but at the same time interesting piece of art.

Sculptures made of utensils

Gary Hovey thinks that spoons, knives, forks are much more than just stainless steel utensils. His sculptures are about the things he enjoys, he is building them by cutting. welding and shaping stainless steel into impressive animal forms since 2004. Fish, birds, bears, cats and even whales are crafted from everyday flatware, forks create layers of feather and fur, spoons add rounded curves and knives produce a shiny flat surface.

“Many people don’t realize at first how the sculptures are constructed. It is funny for me to watch their faces when they discover those sculptures are actually made of flatware!” says Gary with a smile on his face.

Luxurious Teaware Design Inspired by Ferrari

One of the world’s most complex teaware techniques, Tsuiki craftsmanship (‘tsuikidoki’ in Japanese) has its roots among the famous rice fields of Niigata, in the town of Tsubame. Claimed to be the only ones in the world who know and use these techniques with such a perfection, teaware and sake-ware craftshop Gyokusendo reveals the key behind its copperware success.

B10-0701 Vase-shaped teapot with side handle Dark blue hammered mosaic finish (0.4L)

Patience is all it requires during the twenty to thirty years learning process to become a tsuikidoki craftsman. Such a profession doesn’t cost only time but also big bucks. Trying to give a more modern look to the  two hundred year-old technique of hand-hammering copper sheets, Gyokusendo saw the designer extraordinaire Ken Okuyama, a wristwatches lover, especially those from TAG Heuer, as a great partner.

Ken Okuyama and his creations

The 51-year-old made a name for himself as the Pininfarina design director behind the Ferrari Enzo, Maserati Quattroporte, and Maserati Birdcage concept. Since leaving the Italian styling powerhouse in 2006, Okuyama has expanded his design focus to encompass everything from iron tea pots to eyewear, furniture to massage chairs, motorcycles to sports cars, buildings to robots and even the next-generation Shinkansen bullet train.

Now, his drawings had to become reality in the hands of the artisans at Gyokusendo who were met with the challenge of turning copper sheets into three dimensional teapot. Experienced smiths master this fine art and are able to strike the copper sheet just enough, which is crucial since it’s difficult to make the copper contract later on.

Gyokusendo’s copperware of a wide variety of colors and shades is unique. The surface oxidization adds a nice patina to the artwork when tin and potassium sulfide are fused onto the surface of the copper.

E10-0142 Ceremonial sake dispenser Colored silver finish (500cc)

You may wonder why copper is so special in this art. Well, copper has antibacterial properties, and it purifies the water, meaning that the copper ions mellow the flavor of the tea and sake. So over the time it becomes even more lustrous, and the flavor becomes more full and rich: copper turns ordinary water into ‘good water’, to mellow tea, and mellow sake.

Shanghai Metal Corporation offers a wide range of metals such as copper, widely used in architectural artifacts such as Gyokusendo’s teaware and sake-ware. To find out more, please visit our Website or send your inquiry here. Chinese controversial artist and his metal art

Ai Weiwei, a Chinese contemporary artist, born in Beijing, China is active in sculpture, installation, architecture, photography, film but also in social, political and cultural criticism. He collaborated with Swiss architects Herzog & de Meuron as the artistic consultant on the Beijing National Stadium for the 2008 Olympics.

Inspiration in metal

refraction-ai-weiwei-alcatraz-2Ai Weiwei created a massive metal bird wing. He wanted to represent freedom but the installation is immobilized like a trapped animal inside one of America’s most notorious prisons – Alcatraz. It can be only seen from above. Visitors are placed as an authority but they still don’t have full access to the installation.

It weights more than five tons and the whole sculpture is earthbound. The wings are made from reflective solar cookers and kettles used in Tibet. His artwork is kind of a word play, merging together the material quality – metal and concept of freedom.

Inspiration in bicycles

forever-bicycles-ai-wei-wei2Cycling is one of the most common forms of transportation in China. However, Ai Weiwei removed their primary function and made the static. There isn’t anymore freedom associated with cycling and bicycles are piled together forming a labyrinth that keeps them immobile and useless. The visitor can stand below the installation and observe details from new angle and gain a new perspective on the bicycles.
