perforated5

Copper an Egyptian symbol of eternal life towards an increasing symbol of sustainability.

Copper is known to be a major metal and an essential element used all around the globe. It is the oldest metal known to man and was first discovered and used about 10,000 years ago; however it was only alloyed in bronze circa 3000 BC, making it the first engineering material known to man.

Facts-about-copper-The-Pyramid-of-Cheops

The first facts about copper relates to the pyramids of Cheops, located in Egypt. Archeologists have found water pipes partly made from copper. Piping network has been used in Egypt for more than 5000 years. Therefore, copper was believed as the symbol of the eternal life.

Nowadays, copper is not only restricted to piping work, but it has expanded to include heating, cooling and refrigeration, electrical wiring, electronics, power generation and transmission, automotive applications, antimicrobial uses and many more. Moreover, copper can still be considered a symbol of eternal life for the Egyptians; however it can also be considered as a sustainable material; when taking in consideration its process of extraction, production and retail.

Therefore, The Eden Project based in Cornwall, England is one of the most innovative and high profile of the Millennium Projects. It is the largest plant enclosure in the world built in the lightest and most ecological way possible. Eden’s aim was to build the Core (education center) with the highest sustainable specifications, challenging the conventions for sustainable design and construction, with targets above the national benchmarks and using carefully selected materials. The team considered the complex interaction between a range of criteria of sustainable issues, specifically waste neutrality, positive futures, recycled content, certification of materials and local sourcing implications.

eden project

The key criteria affecting the choice of roofing material were:

  • to make a bold architectural statement to complement Eden’s ground-breaking architecture and landscapes;
  • to be durable, strong and relatively lightweight;
  • to be malleable enough to cope with the complex structure of the roof;
  • to have excellent sustainability credentials, and
  • most importantly for a building dedicated to education at Eden, the roof should highlight a progressive message relating to sustainable development issues.

The Eden project

While copper can be relatively expensive for a roof and is in strong competition with other roofing materials, it is robust, even when turned into sheets, malleable, completely waterproof and very long lasting: physical properties that made it ideal for the roof’s complex design. Aesthetically too, copper is the only common metal; other than gold,  that is not grey or silver, making it one of the most easily recognized metals, thus aiding engagement with visitors as a first step to relating the sustainability message.

Massive Hyper-Realist Aluminum Sculpture Worth Millions

The 59-year-old contemporary artist, Jeff Koons, turns classic and ordinary objects into monumental stature and high-production finish. By appropriation and recontextualization recognizable objects, Koons challenges the viewer to think them as artistic objects, blurring the boundaries between popular taste and high art.

Koons is the most expensive living artist with a life’s work believed to worth close to $1billion. A comprehensive exhibition of his life’s work is taking over the Whitney Museum of American Art at its Madison Avenue location before moving downtown to a Renzo Piano-designed building in 2015.

play5

The exhibit is not just a chronological retrospective. It also includes new works by Koons, including “Play-Doh” (1994–2014), a massive hyper-realist aluminum sculpture meant to resemble a pile of its namesake children’s toy, allegedly took twenty years to execute to Koons’s specifications.
play1Back in 1994, Mr. Koons set out to replicate a colorful mound of Play-Doh configured by his son, Ludwig. It was to have been fashioned from polyethylene, “But as I started putting more and more detail in the piece, I realized I needed to make it out of aluminum to get a more hyper-realistic surface,” Mr. Koons said, as if to justify the sculpture’s long gestation.

play6

His choice of colors for “Play-Doh” was equally exacting. Mr. Koons ran off, coming back with a tray with small containers of vintage, dried-up Play-Doh, dating to 1994. “Over the years, the company has changed its colors,” Mr. Koons explained, asked why he had saved the samples and original containers. “They are easy to refresh with a little water.” Tiny mounds of bright yellow, blue, purple, red and green will be matched and spray-painted on the cast-aluminum parts at a company in Connecticut that specializes in decorative painting of hot rods and vintage cars. Then they will be assembled into a gigantic mound.

play4

The installation process was another hurdle.  The crew made a video of a small-scale model of “Play-Doh” to chart exactly how it will move through the museum lobby, into the elevator and up, where it will join other works from the “Celebration” series.

Welding in Its Aesthetic Form

In the movie the Grudge Match, starred by Sylvester Stallone, Robert de Niro and Kim Basinger, Stallone’s character Henry “Razor” Sharp welds metal sculptures from metal trash in his garage. In real life, many welding artists’ artworks have left a mark in our modern culture.

Besides a process used in civil engineering projects, welding has gained a lot of popularity in sculpting art since the 1930’s. Welding is a fundamental method for reshaping steel structures and a way for some artists to give their contribution to art.

For instance, Pablo Picasso designed a 50 feet and 162 ton sculpture as a gift to the people of Chicago. “The Chicago Picasso” was revealed in 1962 and has since stayed in good shape thanks to its protective coating of iron oxide. Other artworks worth mentioning are e.g. Richard Serra’s The Matter of Time found in Bilbao’s Guggenheim Museum, Jeff Koons Balloon Dogs and Alexander Calder‘s La Grande Vitesse in Michigan.

Just like welding industrial objects, also art welding requires a premium welding machine. Shanghai Metal Corporation also has to offer a high-quality welding machine that is widely used in boilers and other container manufacturing, electrical construction, the construction, aviation / aerospace industry, vehicle manufacturing and other industries in a variety of metals.
