If you are going to use Stainless Steel to your surfaces, let Shanghai Metal Corporation teach you how!

1

You must close the breakers that are providing you electricity. After you turn off you’re your breakers, place an non contact electrical tester against the toggle switches. Also, place a noncontact electrical tester against any electrical outlets on the wall after that you wish to cover with Stainless Steel. The tester will light up and sound an alarm if electricity is still present. If the tester shows the sign of the presence of electricity, make sure to turn off the switches and outlets.

2

Clear away the screws that are holding any target wall plates to toggle the switches and electrical outlets. Afterwards, take away the wall plates from the wall. You should leave the toggle switches and electrical outlets connected to the wall.

4

Utilize an 80-grit sandpaper to remove any bumps and imperfections on the wall. Keep sanding the wall until the surface of the wall is flat. This is important because the Stainless Steel sheets must adhere to the surface and sanded surface will help increase glue adhesion.

5

With a caulk gun, pull back the push rod above the handle. The push rod should lock in place. Make sure to add at least a 10-ounce tube of silicone adhesive caulk into the gun. When you are done, pull the trigger to secure the tube.

6

Use utility shears to remove the tip from the tube of caulk. If you want a larger opening on the end of the caulk tube, then cut the tip further back. Place a Phillips screwdriver into the tip and push the end of the screwdriver through the caulk tube to allow the caulk to flow from the tube.

7

Add a liberal amount of silicone adhesive around the perimeter of the wall. Apply more silicone in a zigzag pattern within the perimeter. Make sure you have enough tubes of silicone adhesive caulk for your wall. For reference, a 10-ounce tube of silicone adhesive caulk is necessary for every 20 linear feet of Stainless Steel.

8

Make sure to hold the Stainless Steel sheet at an angle. The bottom of the Stainless Steel sheet must rest against the bottom of the wall. Any cutouts in the Stainless Steel sheet should line up with any items that are permanently installed in the wall, which includes toggle switches and electrical outlets.

Stainless Steel, the Light at the End of the Tunnel

Stainless Steel comes in a variety of alloys and other product forms. Stainless Steel products will survive even when they are placed in the harshest conditions. For example, Stainless Steel does not need any added products to protect it from corrosion. It also has fire resistance properties that are helpful for the construction of buildings, roads, and tunnels.

stainlessconstruction

Recently, more and more tunnels utilize Stainless Steel. Making use of Stainless Steel is an innovative strategy that helps improve the safety of the tunnels that do employ Stainless Steel for its structure. Many tunnels are built to pass through rocks or mountains. Other tunnels are built under rivers, lakes, oceans, and other bodies of water.

Tunnels usually go through a wide variety of conditions daily including surviving through a great range of temperature and high levels of corrosive chemicals. Corrosive chemicals can come from emissions and de-icing salts. Emissions can include many different types of particles including mineral dust deposits, water soluble chlorides, abraded rubber tire fragments, black soot, etc.

Since tunnels go through so much, tunnel engineers have chose to rely upon Stainless Steel. To minimize maintenance and heighten durability, operators of numerous tunnels have intelligently chosen Stainless Steel grades that work best for the tunnel’s environment. For instance, some tunnels are built with Stainless Steel that has a slightest molybdenum content of 6% in order to prevent the failure of fixings.

Molybdenum

Other ways that tunnel engineers depend on Stainless Steel are using them for fire doors, barriers, and reinforcements. Also, they rely on Stainless Steel for failure-proof fixings, which are necessary for attaching lighting, fire-fighting equipment, ventilations, etc. Some tunnels use covers of ventilation made from Stainless Steel. These covers are usually subjected to high levels of corrosive atmospheric gases. Furthermore, since Stainless Steel is a strong fire resistant metal, many tunnels have used the material to support fixed fire fighting systems.

For instance, the Kehu Tunnel in Helsinki, Finland employs a fixed fire fighting system which comprises of five rows of 16 mm diameter Stainless Steel piping and spray nozzles. In case a fire erupts in the tunnel, the high-pressure system produces a fine water mist that will quench tunnel fires.

As one may realize, Stainless Steel is a very powerful and useful material. Stainless Steel is versatile because of its strength, its corrosion resistance properties, and fi re resistance characteristics. Stainless Steel has been able to increase the safety, to reduce damage, and to prevent many disruptions or closings of tunnels.

Stainless Steel Cookware, the Safe Option

You probably think that if your food is thoroughly cooked, then the food is safe enough to eat. However, did you ever stop and think about your cookware? How safe are your pots, pans, and utensils?

cooking

Like most people, you may be unaware of the possibility of your food being filled with particles from your cookware. If that is the case, now is the time for change. A safe alternative to regular cookware is Stainless Steel cookware. Why Stainless Steel? Stainless Steel resists corrosion. This means that the surface of stainless steel will last for a long time. The materials will not break off or flake. With Stainless Steel, you will not need to worry about contaminating your food with chemicals and metal particles. When it comes to your health, you cannot take chances.

corroded

The best part of choosing stainless steel cookware is that they are extremely sturdy and durable. You will even save disposable income because they do need to get replaced often. As a matter of fact, stainless steel will outlive any non-stick surface. Many may argue that non-stick cookware is easier to clean, but stainless steel is actually the better and the healthier investment for you and your family.

money

In truth, Stainless Steel cookware may be a safer option than most if not all non-stick pots and pans. Why? Non-stick cookware will corrode faster and will contaminate food more than stainless steel. Will you take the risk of melting the Teflon coating off of your non-stick cookware? Melted Teflon is extremely hazardous and toxic. Stainless Steel is not difficult to clean with proper care and proper use. On top of that, you do not need to worry about melting Teflon off with stainless steel cookware. With most non-stick cookware, there is a heat limit. If you surpass the heat limits, you may be endangering yourself and your family.

Remember that Stainless steel combines many metals including nickel, manganese, chromium, etc. Make sure to purchase high quality stainless steel cookware. The better the quality of the stainless steel, the less amount of nickel will get into your food. For example, if a pot is made from a type 430 stainless steel, then you know that it contains less than 0.50 percent of nickel. The chances of contamination are very minuscule. In the end, the choice is up to you. Research the type of stainless steel cookware you wish to purchase. Make sure you are getting the high quality Stainless Steel that you deserve.

Think about using Stainless Steel utensils as well. Utensils get washed and used everyday. You want to make sure that the utensils you are putting in your mouth are safe for your health. As far as safety of the food, performance, and longevity, your best bet truly is Stainless Steel.

The Bean Boasts the Beauty of Stainless Steel

A picture of Anish Kapoor with his creation, the Cloud Gate
Anish Kapoor with his creation, the Cloud Gate

Cloud Gate is a Stainless Steel sculpture designed by Anish Kapoor, an Indian-born British artist. To locals, Cloud Gate is better known as “The Bean.” For obvious reasons, the nickname, “The bean,” was coined from its bean like shape.

Legumes and the Bean

This massive artwork rests as the centerpiece of AT&T Plaza at the Millennium Park. It took over two years to create “The Bean.” Did you know that Cloud Gate was constructed from 2004 to 2006? Additionally, it took about 168 Stainless Steel plates to be welded together in order to create this masterpiece.

An example of Stainless Steel Plates
An example of Stainless Steel Plates

Amid the crowds of people and the fingerprints left by tourists and locals alike, the highly polished exterior actually has no visible seams. As a matter of fact, Cloud Gate had to be polished more than a thousand times in order to remove all the visible seams. Today, you will see workers polish “The Bean” to maintain its reflective property.

Several workers polish the bean

Now, let’s get down to details. Cloud Gate measures 10 meters by 20 meters by 13 meters. Its arch is about  3.7 meters. Additionally, this grand sculpture weighs more than 110 tons! To put things into perspective, an average car only weighs about 1 to 1.5 tons. Can you imagine lifting more than 100 cars stacked together?

cars-piled-up

According to Anish Kapoor, liquid mercury served as his inspiration for the design. Liquid mercury is a reflective liquid, which is why the surface of Cloud Gate reflects and distorts the beautiful skyline of Chicago. The underside of Cloud Gate contains a concave chamber. This concave chambers warps and multiplies the reflections of the objects or the people under it. Furthermore, this chamber has become extremely popular with locals and tourists. It has been a favorite for photo-taking due to its reflective characteristic.

Did you know that this unique sculpture was close to not being made? There were many technological concerns regarding construction and assembly. In addition, there were many technical and financial concerns in terms of maintenance. Many experts believed there was no way to make the design come to life. However, there were a few who believed it could happen and made it happen.  Luckily for us, Cloud Gate was formally dedicated on May 15, 2006. This Stainless Steel Sculpture has become an attraction and a go-to spot local and international people alike. If you get a chance to visit Illinois, make sure to stop by Chicago’s Millennium Park.

Hydrate with Stainless Steel Water Bottles

BPAfree signs

Like many of us, you probably have heard of BPA-free plastics. It is almost close to impossible to not have. In many stores and grocery chains, there is a great chance that consumers will come across BPA-free water bottles, bowls, spoons, cups, etc. Most individuals will try to avoid BPA, which is the abbreviation for Bisphenol A.

Skeletal Structure of Bisphenol A
Skeletal Structure of Bisphenol A

Who can blame them? Bisphenol A is a dangerous and toxic chemical to humans. BPA can cause cancer, brain impairment, and many other serious illnesses and complications. Unfortunately for us, BPA has been used and is still being used to make a variety of plastics and epoxy resins.

Bisphenol A molecule
Molecular Structure of Bisphenol A

Why do companies use BPA based plastics? BPA-based plastic is clear and sturdy, which is then used to make an assortment of common consumer goods. These products include water bottles, CDs, bowls, sports equipment, DVDs, etc. BPA based epoxy resins are used as coatings on the inside of many food and beverage cans. They are also used to line water pipes and in making thermal paper. Thermal paper is used to make objects that you may come across everyday or every week such as sales receipts.

Sales-receiptcanned food

You may think that you are being safe by buying BPA-free water bottles, but SMC wants you to think again. BPA-free water bottles could be just as detrimental to the health of human beings as old BPA-based water bottles. How come? Objects that are free of BPA often contain other chemicals that behave in almost the same way. These other chemicals may leach into foods and drinks without the consumer knowing. Once the body absorbs these chemicals, they mimic the sex hormones. For example, they mimic estrogen, which may increase the risk of cancer, obesity, diabetes, infertility, and reproductive problems.

diabetes

Be aware that BPA is not the only dangerous chemicals. The chemical, phthalates, is being used to soften plastics. Studies have suggested that phthalates were correlated to a reduction in male fertility for as much as 20 percent. Phthalates has been used as early as the 1950s.

spermcells

What is one easy way to decrease your exposure to BPA and other toxic chemicals based products? Use STAINLESS STEEL water bottles. Make sure that the cap of the bottle is free of plastics. Otherwise, you may be hydrating with toxic chemicals. Stainless Steel water bottles are tough, durable, reliable, and easy to clean. Make sure to invest in a quality bottle in which you will never have to worry about fluids leaking or the cap unscrewing.

Stainless Steel Sales Boost

Did you know that nickel accounts for half the cost of stainless steel? Nickel surged 41% this year. Why? Indonesia, the largest supplier to China, banned ore exports in order to spur investments from domestic smelters instead of international smelters. Indonesia’s ban has created a global deficit in production until the estimated year of 2019. On the bright side, this downturn in supply is increasing profit for mining companies.

nickelNickel makes up 8 to 9% of series 300 stainless steel, which is about two thirds of the global output. Buyers of stainless steel purchase more products to avoid higher surcharges. As nickel prices surge, the steel industry is seeing some recovery from previous losses. The nickel-fueled gains may not last long. There are talks that China may build smelters in Indonesia to get around the ban.

smelter

China, the biggest metals user in the world, may become a net importer of stainless steel this year. This is because of the dismantled nickel-ore supply from Indonesia. China accounts for 53% of global stainless-steel output. In fact, China had a cost advantage by proactively developing technology to use lower-cost nickel pig iron. The lower-cost nickel pig iron helped lower the price of refined nickel.

It is estimated that Chinese stainless steel output will grow 9.1% in 2014. Last year, the stainless steel output increased 21% with more low-nickel content alloys produced. Construction of Chinese smelters in Indonesia may take an entire year. De-bottlenecking of supply will not occur until mid-2015.

Stainless steel makers all over the world are seeing an increase in sales as customers stock up to avoid higher raw-material surcharges. The increase in sales is reviving prospects for in an industry that accumulated losses since the financial crisis.

Slip-Resistant Solutions

Falling is no option.  Steel Chequered Plates, also known as Diamond plate is designed to resist skidding and slipping in any direction and makes possible safer and faster movement of people.  Also referred to as floor or tread plate, diamond plate is a type of lightweight material that is usually made of steel, stainless steel, or aluminum.  The name comes from the fact that a raised diamond pattern is present on the surface of the metal.

steelstairs

A majority of diamond plates are created through a hot rolling process, where sheets of steel or aluminum are pressed through two rollers that compress the metal.  The added texture reduces the risk of slipping making diamond plate a solution for trench covers, platforms, stair landings, stair treads, walkways, and ramps.

Diamond plate is widely used in shipbuilding, automobile, tractor, rail car, and the building industry.    To learn more about SMC’s diamond plate products, click here.
