Shanghai remains the number 1 container port

The port of Shanghai has further increased its lead over second placed Singapore, to remain the world’s busiest container port, according to statistics compiled by the Journal of Commerce. Singapore, which for a long time was the worlds busiest has fallen further behind by a staggering 5.6 million TEUs (20-foot container equivalent). The port of Shanghai handled 36.5 million TEU’s… there is a reason that China is called the factory of the world.

It should be noted though, that the increased margins between Shanghai and Singapore was not necessarily down to improvements from Shanghai but more a slowdown from the port of Singapore, with container volumes falling for a fourth consecutive year.

In a report earlier in the year, Fitch-owned BMI Research concluded Singapore was unlikely to regain its position as Asia’s biggest transshipment hub, as it has largely reached its capacity. “For the port of Singapore to retain its position as the premier Asian transshipment hub and battle the port of Shanghai for first position, Singapore must continue to expand and keep up with shipping trends,” BMI wrote.
In a rather impressive statistic, seven of the world’s 10 largest container ports can be found in China (including Hong Kong), only the port of Jebel Ali, Dubai, can be found outside of East and South-East Asia.

3 MAPS TO MAKE SENSE OF INTERNATIONAL SHIPPING

We often see the ‘Made in China’ label, but rarely understand what that means.

We sat down and simplified International Shipping. Here are the only 3 photos you need to have a basic understanding of how it works.

  1. Manufacturing

Manufacturers produce massive quantities of items to meet domestic and international demand. Once finished, the items are packaged and loaded into containers for shipping.

  1. Shipping

Massive cargo ships are loaded by machine with standard-sized containers, before leaving port for their next destination.

  1. Consuming

Once the items have arrived, they are unloaded and distributed to businesses and eventually sold-on to consumers.

Shipping Container Beer Garden – Sacramento’s Little Germany

Thanks to the trade deficit with China, the ports of the USA are filled used shipping containers that are rarely sent back to their original destinations. Luckily people have found a way to use them in, say, housing, retailing and restaurant business. One instance is a container beer garden in Sacramento.

The German style Biergarten is built out of two shipping containers that are welded together. A 40 ft container operates as a kitchen, bar, storage and an ordering station. Another 20 ft container is attached to operate as a restroom.

Der Biergarten is at K and 24th streets. The outdoor watering hole will serve 32 draft beers, but not mass-market beer. It also will offer a light menu of traditional German food.

The construction needed also some reinforcement materials. Paneling was done with stainless steel and diamond plate aluminum was used in flooring. They used 6-inch tiles to cover the space between the walls and the floor.

The Biergarten sells 32 different draft beers and and traditional German food including German sausage that in procured from Sacramento’s German butcher. This open-air beer garden closes at 9 pm from Sundays to Thursdays. Fridays and Saturdays they close an hour later. They are closed on rainy days.

Shipping containers accompanied with appropriate building materials lets people start new business with relatively low costs. We sell a large variety of containers and building materials in Shanghai Metal corporation. Visit our websites for detailed descriptions or send us your inquiries through this form. The Many Architectural Applications of Shipping Containers vol.7

Shipping containers are a perfect solution for setting up a pop-up restaurant or a mobile kiosk. As we already covered in our blog about container stores, they can be installed almost everywhere and are very likely to gather a lot of crowd. Some very well know companies have already set up a mobile restaurants and kiosks.

In 2010 Subway had a shipping container restaurant on top of the five story Freedom Tower in New York. Subway established the restaurant for the construction workers who would otherwise have needed 45 minutes to get down from the construction.

Shipping containers are also a form of sustainable building and offer an eco-friendly and a low-cost solution for starting restaurants.  One of the world’s best coffee shops, Starbucks, has also used shipping containers and build such an eco-friendly drive-thru cafe in Seattle.

As a new business idea, shipping container restaurants are an ideal low-cost choice. During these hard times in the economy, people who have always wanted to start their own restaurants but do not have enough capital, seem to have found a solution.

Setting a container kiosk is a smaller scale but still a considerable business.  Container kiosks are also used to implement CSR in developed countries. For instance Coca-Cola has taken this concept to Africa, Asia and Latin America by installing kiosks called Ekocenters that offer locally tailored mix of products, services and resources that also include sustainable energy, wireless communications, refrigerated vaccination storage, health education, and other functionality to jump-start entrepreneurship opportunities and community development.

Studying in shipping containers

Nowadays shipping containers are becoming more and more popular. Container restaurants, shipping container bars, shipping container clinics or shipping container dream houses. Basically, a shipping container is made out of steel and it is a type of storage box used to load heavy equipment, dry goods for shipping purposes. But is it possible to study in a shipping container as well?

A container’s classroom

In rolling hills of Durbanville wine alley, on the outskirts of Cape Town in South Africa, the region known for its poverty, finally found sponsors, three South African companies, Woolworths, Safmarine and AfriSam and a shipping recycled container was converted into a independent classroom. Kids at age 5-6 could start studying.

It started as an annual competition called “Making the difference through design”. The competitors tried to find a way how a recycled container can be adapted to help under-resourced schools.

This container serves as a classroom in the morning and as a library in the afternoon. The container is sheltered from direct sunlight by a big roof while the gap reduces heat gain. This horizontal solar shade is the most radical addition to the container. There are colorful windows located on each side of the container to achieve a cross ventilation. Stepped seating offers children to have their lunch there and socialize. It is also an amphitheater for school assemblies.

A large area around the classroom was transformed into a vegetable garden where children can grow plants and have fresh vegetables as a part of school’s feeding program.
