Distribution Poles: From Wood to Hot Dip Galvanized Steel

With the increasing demand of eco-friendly ans sustainable products from both the public and private sector, the main sector to improve is the energy sector itself.
Distribution pole are the main vectors of electricity and have become over the century a common view of our roads and fields.

Steel poles are becoming increasingly popular among utility companies for building  distribution lines or for replacing the traditional wood poles. Many reasons push these companies to use steel ans invest in the new distribution poles. In this article we will try to summarize the benefit of hot dip galvanized steel mainly reported from linemen who have worked with both wood and steel

Wood pole VS Steel pole

Lighter

For similar strengh, a steel pole is 30 to 60% lighter than a wood pole. This makes them easier to lift, load, install and  handle in general.

Cheaper: Thanks to continuous improvement of quality and manufacturing process of steel poles the cost of steel poles come down to a point where they became competitive with wood.

Flexible:

Unlike wood poles which can only have a certain maximum size determined by the size of the tree taken from,  the size of wood poles can be determined freely according to the need. Steel poles can be made to handle virtually any load and in any length and can also be made as single piece poles or in sections if that would help handling them in the field.

More Sustainable

Galvanized steel poles were a response deforestation issues steel is one of the most recyclable materials around so there is never any environmental concern over disposing steel. an old pole will be recycled to make a multitude of other products. Also , the protective system that is required to cover steel poles is made of zinc which is also an environmentally friendly material and virtually 100 percent recyclable. In addition. The coating systems have been improved so much over the years that it has reduced  the maintenance needed and improved their life expectancy of the poles.

Safer:

The steel structures do not require a full-length copper grounding wire. They are already self conducting for grounding purposes. As a result, no installation of a ground wire is required.

The Bandung Conference and The Promotion of International Cooperation

On the 22nd April 2015 there was the 60th anniversary of the 1955 Bandung Conference, gathering leaders from Africa and Asia. It was the first large scale Asian-African Conference, with the aim to promote Afro-Asian economic and cultural cooperation and to oppose colonialism or neocolonialism.

Twenty nine countries representing more than half the world’s populations sent delegates to the 1955 Bandung Conference. Photo from WhenInTime

“The basic idea of the Bandung Conference was that newly independent countries of Asia and Africa who were emerging from colonialism have common policies, common past and common needs, so they must work together to decide their future,” said Akram Zaki, Pakistan’s former foreign secretary, told Xinhua.

As stated by The Jakarta Post : “The success of convincing China, the then rising influence, to pledge respect for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of others, to settle borders peacefully and to abstain from aggression and threats were remarkable achievements of that time. It created confidence over the improved future of the new and emerging economies”

Chinese President Xi Jinping attended the 60th anniversary of the 1955 Bandung Conference and showed China’s determination in helping to create a “win-win cooperation” and common development between Asia and Africa.

What you didn’t know about air-conditioning

I am not a big fan of air-conditioning but in some parts of the world you just can’t survive without it. There is no doubt that the invention of air-conditioning is considered to be one of the most important achievements in the twentieth century and has hugely impacted the world. Despite the fact, that the air-conditioning is just here, quietly humming, you probably don’t know much about it.

Basic facts about air-conditioning

Willis Carrier

The first modern air conditioner was Willis Carrier in 1902 for a publishing company in Brooklyn. Temperature and humidity were kept low so paper didn’t contract or expand. The air conditioner wasn’t intended to be used for comfort.

Each air conditioner has four basic components : pump, evaporator, condenser, and expansion valve. Most of air conditioners start out as a raw material in the form of steel shapes and steel sheets. When the sheet metal is processed into fabrication, it is cut, punched, formed, drilled or bent into am useful shape or form. It is made of galvanized sheet metal that uses a zinc coating providing a protection against corrosion.

All air conditioners have four basic components: pump, evaporator, condenser, and expansion valve. Hot refrigerant vapor is pumped at high pressure through the condenser, where it gives off heat to the atmosphere by condensing into a liquid. The cooled refrigerant then passes through the expansion valve, which lowers the pressure of the liquid. The liquid refrigerant now enters the evaporator, where it will take heat from the room and change into a gaseous state. This part of the cycle releases cool air into the air-conditioned building. The hot refrigerant vapor is then ready to repeat the cycle.
Air conditioner

Interesting facts about air-conditioning

  • the first public places having air conditioners were movie theaters. During hot summer days, these theaters were the coolest places in town so you can probably imagine those crowds. Studios started to release their best productions in the summer and that’s how modern summer blockbuster  was born.
  • each year United States uses the same amount energy for powering the air conditioners as Africa uses to power the entire continent.
  • the introduction of air-conditioning actually lowered the natural human tolerance for heat.
  • the first building using the air-conditioning was The New York Stock Exchange Building in NYC in 1903 designing and building houses was changed after air conditioner was introduced. Brick structures with high ceilings, porches, breezeways that provided shade for cooling occupants are gone.

Shanghai Metal Corporation uses air conditioning for cooling employees and at the same time sells galvanized steel, steel sheets and other high-quality metal products. Coca Cola Saves Lives with Shipping Containers!

One of the world’s most valuable brands Coca-Cola is utilizing shipping containers in its corporate social responsibility program in developing countries within the bottom-of-the-pyramid (BoP) category. Together with Deka R&D and other major investors including UPS and IBM, the beverage company is installing container kiosks that will provide drinkable water for three billion people in the world that suffer from the lack of it.

These Ekocenters are to provide purified water for communities that have a limited access to safe drinking water. The modularly designed kiosk is made out of a 20 ft shipping container. The container is empowered with Slingshot technology that is responsible for the purification of water.

The kiosk is also meant to generate entrepreneurship in developing countries, especially among women. Along with these kiosks Coca-Cola has also launched their 5by20 program that aims to generate 5 million women entrepreneurs by the year 2020.

As discussed in our previous article about container shops, setting a container kiosk is a considerable business also in developed countries. Coca-Cola has redeveloped the concept and is now using the Ekocenters for offering locally tailored mix of products, services and resources that also include sustainable energy, wireless communications, refrigerated vaccination storage, health education, and other functionality to jump-start entrepreneurship opportunities and community development.

This CSR project begun in 2013 as Coca-Cola set up its first Ekocenter in South Africa. The company aims to install 1,500 to 2,000 Ekocenters by 2015 in Africa, Asia and the Latin and North America.

As shipping containers gain more ways of use, we in Shanghai Metal Corporation are also becoming happier in offering our international customers high-quality standardized shipping containers. Studying in shipping containers

Nowadays shipping containers are becoming more and more popular. Container restaurants, shipping container bars, shipping container clinics or shipping container dream houses. Basically, a shipping container is made out of steel and it is a type of storage box used to load heavy equipment, dry goods for shipping purposes. But is it possible to study in a shipping container as well?

container-classroom-9
A container’s classroom

In rolling hills of Durbanville wine alley, on the outskirts of Cape Town in South Africa, the region known for its poverty, finally found sponsors, three South African companies, Woolworths, Safmarine and AfriSam and a shipping recycled container was converted into a independent classroom. Kids at age 5-6 could start studying.

container-classroom-12
A concept diagram

It started as an annual competition called “Making the difference through design”. The competitors tried to find a way how a recycled container can be adapted to help under-resourced schools.

container-classroom-2
Colorful windows

This container serves as a classroom in the morning and as a library in the afternoon. The container is sheltered from direct sunlight by a big roof while the gap reduces heat gain. This horizontal solar shade is the most radical addition to the container. There are colorful windows located on each side of the container to achieve a cross ventilation. Stepped seating offers children to have their lunch there and socialize. It is also an amphitheater for school assemblies.

A large area around the classroom was transformed into a vegetable garden where children can grow plants and have fresh vegetables as a part of school’s feeding program.

Reefer Containers – The Best Tool for Shipping Penguins!

People are shipping some strange things these days. A British news service Metro lists 10 weirdest items that people have ever shipped. The list includes a dead cat, a live hamster and a hot shepherd’s pie. The Denizen magazine writes about a person who shipped Heinz ketchup from the United States to Singapore. FedEx has also gathered a list of the weirdest items they have ever shipped. Some items are temperature sensitive a therefore require a refrigerated shipping container. What could be a good example of such an item? Well, penguins!

image

The FedEx Corporation actually shipped nineteen African blackfoot penguins that were saved from the Hurricane Katrina in 2006. The penguins traveled with two sea otters in airfreight back to New Orleans from California where they spent their eight-month refuge. The chartered flight of US$100, 000 was donated by FedEx and the penguins had a nice reception with a purple mat waiting them at the airport.

image

Unlike African penguins, antarctic penguins live in very extreme conditions and can survive a cold breezy weather. For example Emperor Penguins are one of the most warm-blooded animals on the planet enabling them to breed even in low temperatures of -30°C (-22°F) and while putting up with winds of 200 kmh (125mph) and more. The emperor penguins can maintain a 38°C degree body temperature mostly by huddling with other penguin buddies in a flock.

image

Besides an international shipping permission, shipping temperature sensitive items such as penguins, otters or camel milk, one needs a refrigerated shipping container. Shanghai Metal Corporation has a long experience in supplying high-quality reefer containers. In Shanghai Metal we only sell environmentally friendly reefer containers that have a low Co2 footprint. Our containers can maintain a temperature of -35°C at the lowest. More information about our refrigerated containers can be found in our website. End Hunger and Extreme Poverty in Africa

The United Nations together with all the world’s countries and all the world’s leading development institution agreed on eight Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). They range from halving extreme poverty rates to halting the spread of HIV/AIDS and providing universal primary education, all by the target date of 2015.

farm5MDG 1 calls for the proportion of people who suffer from hunger to be halved between 1990 and 2015. In other words, MDG 1 is about eradicating extreme poverty and hunger. In a continent like Africa, where escalating food prices result of a 23 percent increase (in US dolar terms) in the FAO Food Price Index from 2006 to 2007, the number of people left hungry has increased. Nearly one billion people – equal to the populations of both the USA and Europe – do not have enough to eat.

A Kenyan farmer tends newly planted trees

A country where their people are starving and farming is the main industry, rural prosperity would be a development catalyst in Africa. But in order to create a prosperous rural Africa the promised aid is vital, which, in turn, can provide a springboard for development across the continent.

farm6

Farm Africa is a NGO supporting farmers from dry rangelands to lush forests in five east African countries: Ethiopia, Kenya, South Sudan, Tanzania and Uganda. Farm Africa’s impact has benefited 30.000 people in Babati, Tanzania from doubled crop yields, doubled the number of children going to school, 770.000 hectares of forest now protected in Ethiopia, increased by 600% the value of wild coffee harvest in Bale, Ethiopia, and by 249% in sorghum crop harvests in Kitui County, Kenya.

farm7

Nguuzi, his wife and three children didn’t have enough food to eat when his crops were badly affected by drought. But with FarmAfrica’s help, he learned how to water his crops by using the drip irrigation techniques and a water tank built to him. He earns money by selling his green gram crop through a farmers’ group, his family can eat porridge now, and he is able to pay for school uniforms so that his children can attend school.

farm3

farm1

Nguuzi is only one example out of many others benefited from NGO’s help. By setting up water points to improve access to clean, safe water, for families, livestock, FarmAfrica added five dams and four boreholes, which improved farmers’ access to water and allowed drip feed irrigation sites to be established close to these water sources. Eight farmers are already benefiting through the sale of vegetables grown on these drip irrigation sites.

farm2

Shanghai Metal Corporation is proud of initiatives of NGOs such as that of FarmAfrica, wich are crucial to help farmers get out of situations of extreme poverty and hunger. Shanghai Metal Corporation is specialized in aluminum alloy tubes/pipes widely used in irrigation pipes such as the ones used in the irrigation system build by FarmAfrica. For our full list of products that we offer check out our website here. More Women Needed In The Mining Industry

The Chamber of Mines says that the industry has made “commendable strides” in boosting the number of women in the workforce and management positions.

“Indeed, more can still be done and the sector believes that this should not be a superficial exercise but rather driven through skills development and skills transfer swomen4o that women ascend to these position with capacity to deliver,” chamber spokesman Zingaphi Matanzima as published by Bloomberg.

Susan Shabangu, South Africa’s first women’s affairs minister, highlights the imporatance of improving the role of women in the economy two decades after the establishment of democracy. Especially in South Africa where women earn about 50 percent less than their male counterparts doing the same work, according to the World Economic Forum’s Global Gender Gap Report in 2013, minister Shabangu has a long path to follow in trying to meet the women3government’s minimum target for the mining industry. By this year, 10 percent for women employed in mining companies, as well as they must receive equal pay as their male counterparts for the same work. Africa’s second-biggest economy has an estimated earned-income female-to-male ratio of 0.52, ranking it 91 out of 134 countries in the world, it said.

“A lot still needs to be done, not only in the mining industry but also in the automobile industry and other previously male-dominated industries,” Shabangu said. “It’s just unacceptable, 20 years into democracy to still see women getting lower salaries for the same jobs”.women2
