METAL MAGIC – FROM THE SCRAP HEAP TO MASTERPIECE

Metal is an extremely versatile medium for art and New Mexico artist Chris Turri has taken it to all new heights.

Not only are his pieces composed of metal, b he specifically uses old metal.

In his interview with KRQE News, he revealed that he sources metal from unconventional places such as old pipes, the side of streets and from old cars.

Chris’ work can be viewed on his personal site and in galleries.

We’d love to hear more about artists using metal in creative ways! Send us a message telling us your favorites!

BE CREATIVE WITH ALUMINUM FOIL!

Aluminum foils mostly use for packaging, but few artist use aluminum foil to create their artworks like crafts, sculpts, and painting. We also can do simple drawing with aluminum foil and it’s not difficult! Want to be creative with aluminum foil? Check this out!

Do you have unused aluminum foil or aluminum scrap at home? Don’t throw it away! Let’s be creative and create amazing artworks with unused aluminum foil!

From aluminum foil you can make lots of artworks like painting and crafts. With this material, you can get a beautiful painting that looks like old tin ceiling tiles in the Victorian era, so vintage! You just need to prepare cardboard, pencil, thick glue, glue stick, aluminum foil, cotton swab, and black shoe polish. Don’t worry, it’s easy! Let’s get started J

First, draw your picture with your pencil on your cardboard. You can draw anything that you want!

Second, use thick glue to go over lines on your drawing and let it dry.

After the glue completely dry, use glue stick to attach the foil and wrap it over the front and to the back.

Press foil down around dry glue lines and use cotton swab up against the glue outlines once the foil is pressed down.

Draw patterns in all the space with pencil.

Last one, rub over the whole thing with black shoe polish, wait a few seconds and wipe off.

Taraaa! You’ve just made the Victorian style painting by your own! It’s really easy right?

There’s a few artist that also use aluminum foil to create their artistic artworks. For instance, Kader Attia, European artist that lives in Paris. On 2007, he made amazing sculpture made from aluminum foil. He called his artwork “Ghost”, which illustrated about a group of Muslim women in prayer. He made their bodies as vacant shells, empty hoods devoid of personhood or spirit. “Ghost” made from unused aluminum foil and it simply questioning about modern ideologies in relation to individual identity.

3

Another artist that also uses aluminum foil for his artworks is Tom Friedman. He’s an American sculptures artist that lives in Massachusetts. One of his interesting aluminum foil sculpture is a peeing figure from foil in 2012.

4

One of artistic artworks made by aluminum foil also showed at Smithsonian American Art Museum. This artwork was made by James Hamptom in 1950-1964. This artwork called “The Throne of the Third Heaven of the Nation’s Millennium General Assembly.

Is it amazing right how aluminum foil can be an artistic artwork? Especially you can also try it by yourself!

SM(ART) RECYCLING : JAPANESE ARTIST TRANSFORMS ALUMINUM BEER CANS TO POP ART

How would you react if you knew someone who drinks beer, takes the aluminum cans then transforms it into art ?

Well this japanese artist, MACAON is the kind of person who does this kind of thing. From basic and used aluminum materials he imitates well known characters like Buzz Lightyear from Toy Story, Gundam robots, Pikachu and even a cool mask of Dark Vader !

cancraft-4.jpg cancraft-14.jpg

The fun thing about this artist is that most of his works are imitations of already famous characters which allows a wider understanding and appreciation from the public’s point of view. Although each of this figure doesn’t represent a deep meaning, the message that Macaon transmits, directly or indirectly, is to wake up the collective consciousness of recycling ; as the world consumes more, it is in our best interest to stop wasting basic materials and start thinking new strategies as to reusing them better. We live in world where beer cans can be transformed into your favorite cartoon, movie or animated character.

cancraft-9.jpg
Totoro figure by Macaon

As you can see, aluminum beer cans here are reused in a sophistic way and are not wasted. Without basic and flexible material like aluminum, consuming society like ours would have difficulties to satisfy our needs. Simple gestures like recycling aluminum cans can lead to a better future and that is what Macaon’s creativeness can influence to later generations.

It’s amazing how a common material like aluminum can have different types of uses. That is exactly what Shanghai Metal Corporation can provide you !

As representatives of the metal industry, Shanghai Metal Corporation is one of the leading businesses in the manufacturing of metal quality products in the global field. HARD ART: MASTERPIECES MADE OF STAINLESS STEEL

Art is a universal form of way to express your feelings and your thoughts. One of the million ways to manifest it is this:

wire-7
Dramatic Stainless Steel Wire Fairies by Robin Wight

Robin Wight made this masterpiece from STAINLESS STEEL. The thing is how could such delicate subjects like a young woman or a dandelion can be exposed by an element that usually represents the opposite of them.

Stainless Steel symbolize generally our industrial society with it’s labor class, alienation, coal, hardworking and sweaty men. You know…

BUT artist Robin Wight is one that surpasses this image. Stainless Steel doesn’t represent any of those symbols but these more feminine and natural forms. His technique and his imagination provides a sort of paradoxe that we live everyday and that’s why it is a masterpiece.

Check out his other works:

IMPORTANCE OF METALS IN YOUR EVERYDAY LIFE

Whether you like it or not, metals play a BIG PART in our everyday life. We interact with them differently as each of them has it’s own properties : some are used as supporting elements for buildings, smartphones, transportation. Some are used for decoration by artists and sculptor or some are used to display wealth, like gold for example.

That being said, we have tendency to overlook the importance of metal because we confront them directly or indirectly everywhere, therefore perceiving their presence as self-evident. Oh and also, some of them are imperceptible to human eyes so this may contribute to our lack of understanding metal in our life.

So let’s explore these hidden but common metals we interact with everyday shall we ?

COPPER for example, is a type of cheap metal used by companies to conduct electricity. The average American will use more than 1,000 pounds of copper in their lifetime ! You can find them in your ALARM CLOCKS, DENIM JEAN BUTTON, PORTABLE AUDIO DEVICES or your DOORKNOB and even in your GRANOLA BARS ! Copper is essential not only for everyday objects but also for our own body.

Next on the list is STEEL. Like Copper metal, you can find it almost everywhere too. Taken for granted, they are in buildings, machinery, cars, galleries and statues. So can you imagine our world without these elements ? It would be hard to conceive another element as useful as these metals. When the word Steel is pronounced it also means RECYCLING. Each year, the US alone recycles no less than 80 million tons of steel, which works out to about 70% of the world’s total steel recycling

Another metal important for our future is ALUMINIUM. Thanks to its strength, low weight and good potential for recycling Aluminium is as useful and flexible as it’s other metal brothers. It’s properties also allow to build high buildings, transportation and also for packaging, the most common use that this metal is known for.

Not to mention other types of metal, these three principles are maybe the most commonly known by public although people easily tend to forget their usefulness.

Apart from the referred objects we just mention, the crazy thing about  metal is that it has a really wide range of function and can be used by any types of profession. Physicians and architects take advantage of these metals by constructing impressive buildings industry while some artists see these elements as pure physical support in which they transfer their imagination and creativity.

See how great metals are ? As representatives of the metal industry, Shanghai Metal Corporation is one of the leading businesses in the global field. As a major producer of copper, aluminium, steel and other metal products and service, we essentially are committed to the universal use that metal can offer by delivering overseas and promoting environmental sustainability.

More Than a Radiator

The world of interior design is border-less and what is commonly considered a normal domestic heat exchanger can become a real piece of art. As you have certainly figured out, today we will talk about metal radiators: not common radiators but design radiators!

Here is a selection for you.

CIUSSAI (concept & design Stefano Ragaini e Giorgio Di Tullio) It is a long tube radiator. Depending on the customer’s needs and creativity, the uniqueness of this radiator is that it is “on the move” and for this reason it can take different forms.

SCALETTA (desing Elisa Giovannoni). This stair-radiator does not require a complex installation and can then be easily moved from a room to another.

Riace Warriors: No EXPO!

Until few weeks ago it seemed that the 2015 Milan Expo would have hosted the two famous bronze sculptures known as Riace Warriors. Unfortunately, the tourists coming from all over the world to visit this year’s edition of the Universal Exposition will not have the chance to admire these incredible pieces of art dubbed Bronzi di Riace. Some maintained that the two metal statues would have represented an added value for the exhibition, perfectly fitting with the healthy nutrition theme inspiring the 2015 Expo. Indeed the bronzes are the symbol of bodily vigor and muscle elasticity.

However, because of logistical issues the Riace Warriors will stay at the Magna Grecia National Museum of Reggio Calabria, in the southern of Italy. Indeed, after having gone through a delicate process of restoration between 2009 and 2011, the sculptures are today exhibited to the public inside a micro-climate room, and displayed on top of an anti-seismic  platform made of Carrara marbled.

You may wonder why here at Shanghai Metal Corporation we care so much about the Bronzi di Riace. First, because of their incredible story. These two metal statues were found in the Ionian Sea in 1972, 300 meters away from the coast of Riace, a tiny village close to Reggio Calabria. According to the analysis, the statues were probability made in Athens around 450 BC and then shipped to Rome. But the boat that was carrying them sank. The sculptures were then found interred under 8 meters of sand. Second, the statues are made of bronze and today after restoration their greatest splendor is again available to visitors. So if you plan to go to Italy for the 2015 Expo do not forget to book a flight for Reggio Calabria to see these amazing pieces of metal art.

Metal Step by Step

If you follow this blog, you certainly know that here at Shanghai Metal Corporation we are big fans of the combination between metal and interior design. This is the reason why we often write about metal furniture and metal features employed in architecture projects. We wrote about tables, chairs, wardrobes and so on. But today we take more than a step further. We take a stair further. A metal stair, of course! Metal is more and more employed in the construction of design stairs as the below gallery will show you. Take a look!

Francesco Librizzi Studio has designed a basic and modern metal structure staircase that fits perfectly in a 1900 apartment in Milan. The staircase is made from 14mm-wide lengths of iron, which create ladder-like treads inside a rectilinear tower. (from dezeen.com)

Renzo Piano’s Whitney Museum

Today Shanghai Metal Corporation brings you to the Big Apple where Italian architect Renzo Piano has recently announced the completion of the project that will host the new Whitney Museum of American Art. The building is “an asymmetric steel and concrete assembly in Manhattan’s Meatpacking District” (dezeen.com). As reported by the Telegraph: in the latest years, the area has undergone considerable transformation: it “has been cleaned up, if not wholly sanitized.” (telegraph.co.uk). The new building designed by Piano ,in collaboration with New York practice Copper Robertson, fits perfectly this renewal plan. Indeed, the district, “formerly a deserted industrial area, is now the place of fashion and art, of technological start-ups and of the trendiest meeting places.” (living.corriere.it)

Piano_Final3-kaOF-U50336222519EMB-1140x589@Living_MGslide
from living.corriere.it

Talking about the structure of the museum located along the Hudson River, the Whitney features indoor and outdoor galleries – 50,000+ square feet of indoor galleries + 13,000 square feet of outdoor exhibition space on a series of rooftops (from nycedc.com). Moreover, “most impressive is the fifth floor’s showstopping 18,000-square-foot space, the largest column-free museum gallery in New York City”(from architecturaldigest.com). Finally, from the glass-doors and the numerous terraces, visitors can enjoy an amazing view of New York and the river.

As Piano said “a successful building always tells a story. You have to be able to produce rich narrative. An architect needs a good story to start with…and a good pen to write it” (form living.corriere.it) And at Shanghai Metal Corporation we really like this story!
