Aluminium & Bikes

Today, Shanghai Metal Corporation brings you to the world of aluminium. Did you know that aluminium is one of the main materials a bike is built of? If you want to know more about aluminium and bikes don’t miss this post!

The first bike we present you today is a Paul Timmer’s creation. It is a very innovative bike made of wood and aluminium. Yeah, exactly! We are talking about a wooden bike! What’s more special is that all the aluminium features are realized through a 3D printer. It’s the first time that this method is employed for the construction of a bike. The bike weighs 11 kilos. The  frame is strengthened by aluminum parts that improve performance without burdening the bike. Paul Timmer works as a designer and a carpenter in Amsterdam.

Here is what Timmer’s website says.

The wooden bike is made from solid ash. It becomes strong enough by extraordinary attention to detail. This frame is built completely from the ground up. No standard parts are used to build the frame. All custom non-wooden parts are 3D printed aluminium. The external fork and woodwork are a result of the reinvention of the bike frame.

The second model that we want to show you today is the bicycle without rays which can be folded into a backpack. This bike is made of aluminium and weighs 10 kilos circa. It has been designed by the thirty year old Gianluca Sada. This young engineer from Turin, in Italy, came up with the idea of this bike  while watching kids playing. The peculiarity of this aluminum bike is that its wheels do not require rays.

The history of folding bikes dates back to 1878. William Grout was the first to design one. The bike designed by Gianluca Sada has the advantage of being able to fold in a few seconds, reaching the length of an umbrella. Here is what Gianluca Sada said about his SadaBike:

The objective of this project is to have a cycle with standard dimensions ( wheels 26 “) and have a small package during transportation. The wheels have no spokes, the minimum size in closing, the system folder with the single movement, the packaging container can also be used as a backpack, are innovations of this script. The starting point of this research is the study of art that starts from an overview of the urban individual mobility to reach, then, the folding bicycle.

China – The World’s Leading Market of E-Bikes

The process of industrialization has given much contribution to the development of a country. However there is a price for it. China is often criticized for its industrial pollution which has caused widespread environmental and health problems. Pressured by the international communities and the health problems of its population, the country has made one of the most important improvement to protect the environment. Some has said that China has done more for the environment than other industrialized countries during their earlier stages of development.

There is a fast increase of cars and traffic jams in China. However, most of the individuals still uses bicycle as transportation. When I first arrived at Shanghai on November 2014, I was really surprised by the number of 2 wheeled vehicles that circulates on the road. Most of them are electric bikes.  Let’s check them out.

The model in the photo below is very common.

The vespa-style electric bikes are eye-catching and are popular among expats.

Many main roads in China have paths for bicycle. Even though not all Chinese respect the traffic rules, it is quite safe and convenient to transport with bike if you’re extra careful.

Today, China is the world’s leading producer of e-bikes. Recently, China’s largest search engine, Baidu, revealead that they’re working on the production of a smart bike, called DuBike.

In Shanghai Metal Corporation, we also want to help in protecting the environment. Chinese controversial artist and his metal art

Ai Weiwei, a Chinese contemporary artist, born in Beijing, China is active in sculpture, installation, architecture, photography, film but also in social, political and cultural criticism. He collaborated with Swiss architects Herzog & de Meuron as the artistic consultant on the Beijing National Stadium for the 2008 Olympics.

Inspiration in metal

refraction-ai-weiwei-alcatraz-2Ai Weiwei created a massive metal bird wing. He wanted to represent freedom but the installation is immobilized like a trapped animal inside one of America’s most notorious prisons – Alcatraz. It can be only seen from above. Visitors are placed as an authority but they still don’t have full access to the installation.

It weights more than five tons and the whole sculpture is earthbound. The wings are made from reflective solar cookers and kettles used in Tibet. His artwork is kind of a word play, merging together the material quality – metal and concept of freedom.

Inspiration in bicycles

forever-bicycles-ai-wei-wei2Cycling is one of the most common forms of transportation in China. However, Ai Weiwei removed their primary function and made the static. There isn’t anymore freedom associated with cycling and bicycles are piled together forming a labyrinth that keeps them immobile and useless. The visitor can stand below the installation and observe details from new angle and gain a new perspective on the bicycles.

Should We All Switch To Cycling?

bike1

Whether it’s to boost your fitness, health or bank balance, or as an environmental choice, taking up cycling could be one of the best decisions you ever make. Not convinced? Here are some of the benefits:

happy

You’ll get there faster

Sleep more deeply

Look younger

Boost your bowels

Increase your brain power

Beat illness

Live longer

Save the planet

Avoid pollution

So do we have you convinced? Great! So now it’s time to buy a bike – but which one?

bike3

There are two types – carbon or steel frames. The carbon versus steel argument really boils down to is durability. You’re shelling out a significant chunk of change for a bike. This is a bike you will be riding every single day (optimistically) and racing a few weekends per month (even more optimistically). If you have a finite amount of money like most normal people in this world, you want a bike that can deliver durability and reliability to last as long as possible, so at a minimum, when you’re done with it, you can sell it to someone else with a clean conscience knowing it will provide the next owner years of enjoyment.
