São Paulo Presents Marvellous Container Art

The Brazilian city of São Paulo organized a design weekend during August 2014.  During the weekend some fabulous pieces of design art were presented. One of the providers was a Brazilian design company Contain[it] that transforms pieces of shipping containers into beautifully designed furniture.

Among the works on display were a lounger chair, lamps, vases, modular shelving, and a table that are made out of shipping container scraps.  The scraps are collected from the company’s shipping container projects that turn discarded containers into new spaces.

Shipping containers are becoming a mainstream construction material for green and environmentally friendly construction projects. In general, the world is suffering from oversupply of shipping containers because they are seldom reused for shipping.

Shipping container architecture solves the problem of used shipping containers turning into waste, but only partially. Shipping container houses, villas, hotels etc. need to be modified through welding which creates waste of container scraps.

Contain[it] solves this problem by giving the container scraps a new life and therefore creating art with zero waste. The company’s mission is to create art that gives an impact in an intelligent way. The company really gives a great contribution for the well-being of nature.

Today sustainable architecture and shipping containers are becoming synonyms. No other building material can be same time as durable and low-cost as shipping containers. Shipping container architecture enables designers to create environmentally friendly construction that can easily be retrofitted to any natural environment.

As an experienced provider of shipping containers, Shanghai Metal Corporation is proud of serving its international clients as well as giving a major environmentally friendly contribution to the construction industry. Can You Guess What’s Wrong In This Picture?

The photograph series “For What It’s Worth” by photographer and artist Dillon Marsh is at the very least surreal. By combining photographic precision and computer-generated imagery Marsh produces illogical images as an attempt to provide a graphic visualization of the quantity of copper extracted from the Blue Mine in Springbok, situated 550 km north of Cape Town.

Blue Mine, Springbok (1852 to 1912) 3,535 tonnes of copper extracted

The blue in ‘Blue Mine’ is in reference to the color of rocks in the mine as a result of copper coming into contact with oxygen in the air. Back to the mid-19th century copper was the primarily driving force behind the establishment of relatively remote area of the country such as Springbok, Okiep and Nababeep as formal towns. Following operations that began in 1852, the Blue Mine is recorded as the first commercial mining endeavour in South Africa. South Africa hasn’t been so commercial before, and with the discovery of copper deposits the town became a centre for mining prospectors with movement of people coming to Springbok also attracted by its near and steady supply of drinkable water.

Nababeep South Mine, Nababeep (1882 to 2000) 302,791.65 tonnes of copper extracted

By 2007, however, most of these mines had run their course and production had stopped almost completely. As an attempted to represent the uncertain future for the towns and people of the region, Marsh placed impressive copper spheres in the arid scene of what once served as copper mine. “Whether they are active or long dormant, mines speak of a combination of sacrifice and gain”, describes Marsh. He also adds “their features are crude, unsightly scars on the landscape – unlikely feats of hard labor and specialized engineering, constructed to extract value from the earth but also exacting a price”.

Jubilee Mine, Concordia (1971 to 1973) 6,500 tonnes of copper extracted

Mash’s intention is “to create a kind of visualization of the merits and shortfalls of mining in South Africa, an industry that has shaped the history and economy of the country so radically”.  On the one hand, the development of the mines around Okiep contributed significantly to the demise of copper mining in south-west of England. On the other hand technology and skill were still transferred from these mines to other parts of the world. Unesco classifies the principle value of the copper mine site of Springbok an extension of the Cornwall and West Devon Mining Landscape in the UK, for instance, also sharing a close association with other mining landscape in Australia, Brazil, India and Mexico.

Tweefontein Mine, Concordia (1887 to 1904) 38,747.7 tonnes of copper extracted

Eco Update: China

A not so widely known fact is that China almost consumes as much coal as the rest of the world combined, where it accounts for 80% of the countries source for energy. This is an alarming trend considering that the burning of this fossil fuel is one of the most polluting ways to generate electricity. In an economy where manufacturing and industry is on the rise this further adds to our concern.

Coal Mine

However, this may soon be about to change! Given the high levels of pollution in the country, particularly in industrial cities and around Beijing (where often daily particulate matter in the air can cause respiratory problems for even the healthy) people are sick of this issue and the government is listening.  A number of measures have been announced that should help to curb this trend; firstly the country has introduced bans on the building of new coal fired power plants and place limits on total energy consumption. These legislative measures will be complemented with an emissions trading scheme, due to be implemented by 2016, bringing the country up to speed with the developed economies of Europe and New Zealand.

There are signs that this move is working too, with coal imports at their lowest since 2012 despite prices being at their lowest since the peak of early 2011. This is complemented by banning of extremely low quality coal imports, particularly varieties containing high levels of sulfur and ash whose burning produces the highest levels of pollutants.

Air Pollution In Beijing

As a responsible and socially aware Metal supplying and manufacturing company based in China (with global offices) with heavy involvement in the metals and mining industries,Shanghai Metal Corporation (SMC) is proud to report on this news and welcomes developments in this area as it will undoubtedly lead to an increase in the quality of life of many everyday Chinese.

Construction Trend: Prefabricated Housing

Given the increased costs of owning and building ones home around the world, prefabricated housing is on the rise as it offer home owners the ability to have their own home and at an affordable price. For example the headline photo in this article features a pre-fab home call the Y-Cube, retailing for just $US50,000.hom22

The above example in Spain features a lust forest design on its exterior and is kept water light with the galvanized steel roof. This model shows how prefabricated homes don’t have to be all the same, thanks to customization of such little details and can actually be quite striking.

With a remarkably different design but equally impressive take on the concept of prefabrication the picture below shows a Brazilian Architects newest design out of Sao Paulo which not only protects residents from the sometimes harsh tropical forest climate but also allows for adequate ventilation and sunlight through its prefabricated galvanized steel shutters; something much needed in this unique environment.

Shanghai Metal Corporation offers steel in a multitude of forms that can be used to satisfy the applications mentioned above. These include galvanized steel coils, strips, sheets, plates, wire, pre-painted steel, roofing material (in a number of profiles) as well as steel grating, stainless steel and copper.

A Brazilian’s Take on Legalizing Graffiti In Urban Streets of Brazil

In Brazil graffiti used to be considered illegal. Not seen as a form of artistic expression, graffiti was banned from all public spaces, while the “grafiteiros” (taggers) risked their lives in the middle of the night climbing walls and fences in order to leave their mark. The issue is that the grafiteiro just “wants to put his name on the wall, to be famous, and is a vandalist, but the [street] artist is interested in aesthetics and community”, says Rio street artist Smael Vagner.

grafite7

Pichação (tagging) and grafite (graffiti) are two distinctive street art styles in Brazil. And it’s been a long journey for these street artists to convince the population, the city and the nation that their work is art, something that should be appreciated and valued.

grafite14

Graffiti or street art increased so much in popularity and started getting large attention of street artists from around the world, that in March 2009, the Brazilian government passed a law making street art and graffiti legal, if done with the consent of building owners.

grafite1

It is a huge step towards recognition, appreciation, reflection of the evolving landscape in Brazilian street art, an emerging and divergent movement in the global street art landscape. More than that, graffiti in Brazil is being used now to protect façades from pichação. Interestingly, some kind of ethic code in the graffiti world seems to exist between taggers and street artists; a tagger who imprints his marks on top of another street art is ultimately insulting the street artist, which is seen as breaking a “silent” code. It could even endanger in a dangerous rivalry between the two of them, something that the city, the people and the nation do not want to see: more violence.

grafite4

In Rio de Janeiro, graffiti is everywhere. It exists in all corners of the city, from the favelas to upper class neighborhoods, from residential, commercial to institutional. It is bold in scale and aesthetics and is anything but graffiti. But graffiti art is not only an aesthetic choice, but an economic choice; painting a façade with art may be cheaper than another mode of beautification.

grafite5

Personally, I think grafite brings more than decoration to a neighborhood, gives its people and its community a more personal feeling, brings the people closer to each other and to the community itself, refreshes the site, signals thieves and vandalists that the community cares about its people and that is not a place for them, offers citizens the opportunity to voice their opinion by art expression and young people to have a new perspective in life. Hence, street art has a crucial societal role in Brazil, and in many other countries. And I really hope street art movement never stops, keeps progressing and improving till the day people, communities, cities, states and nation are all together supporting an environment in which it can prosper.

You Will Like This New Concept: “Little Saturday”

Little Saturday is a concept adopted in Norway, Finland and Sweden, that adds Wednesday to the list of “drinking days”, with Friday and Saturday. Many nightclubs and bars stay open late and offer many kinds of little Saturday specials (rock shows, cheaper drinks etc.). Norwegian teenagers and young adults often use Lille Lørdag as a synonym for Wednesday (Onsdag in Norwegian.) The same concept also exists in some other Nordic countries. In Sweden it is known as Lill-Lördag and in Finland it is called pikkulauantai.

saturday

So if you feel for a little break during your week, you could call in some friends to go hang out at pubs, drink some beer, such as BudLight Platinum, the first beer to adopt a twist-off cap, and a 50% stronger aluminum that helps the beer get colder faster, as we blogged here.

040813-featured-image-01-bud-light-platinum-662x188

However, if you choose to go for the conventional beer can you could even collect the aluminum pulltabs to make a fashionable and modern handbag such as the ones specially designed and crafted by Escama Studio craftwomen in Brazil.

saturday5

Instead of beer you go for wine, you will have to consider going for the cork or screw-cap for your wine bottle. The advantages of each bottle you can find in our article here.

saturday2

Of course you cannot drink on empty stomach. So if you snack on some potato chips, don’t forget to do the test to find out whether or not your potato chip bags are made of aluminum or Mylar, a fusion of plastic film with a sort of metallic ink, which make it not recyclable, as we explained here.

saturday4

Any choice you make to provide your week that early weekend break widely adopted in Norway, Sweden and Finland, gives you the opportunity to act more environment-friendly and give the disposals of your enjoyment a proper treatment.

Recycled Aluminum Pulltabs Made Popular By The Brazilian Cooperative “Escama Studio”

Craft cooperatives, also known as social enterprises, are now finding new means to empower members of their communities to earn money.

“Escama Studio”, which means fish scales in Portuguese, is a Brazilian craft cooperative offering women in the ‘satellite cities’ of Brasília business practices in hand production of bags using recycled aluminum pulltabs as main raw material.

bag2
Escama Studio’s craftwomen

The craftswomen receive business training and are fairly paid for their piecework with a price set by the cooperative. Escama’s purses are as ethical and eco-friendly as they are made entirely from recycled materials – some of the bags uses over 700 aluminum pull-tabs recycled from soda cans in Brazil. Each piece comes with a hang tag bearing the signature of the person who made it. On their website the artist profiles and picture are made available to the public, where you could leave a message to the artist.  In addition, Escama donates 3 percent of gross annual sales directly back to the cooperatives.

bag8
Escama Studio’s handbags and their respective craftwomen’s name
bag7
“Stay-on-tab” pulltab version used in the production of handbags

The majority of the beverage cans’ pulltabs used in the production of the eco-friendly handbags are made of aluminium (75 percent). Another more rare material used to produce pulltabs is tin-plated steel, which accounts for the rest of the worldwide production of pulltabs (25 percent). These pulltabs are known as “stay-on-tab”, invented by Ermal Fraze and Omar Brown. The “stay-on-tab” version features the “easy-open ecology end” which replaced old plain lids (known as shells) in order to reduce injuries and roadside litter caused by removable tabs. The mechanism uses a separate tab attached to the upper surface as a lever to depress a scored part of the lid, which folds underneath the top of the can and out of the way of the resulting opening.

Worldwide production for all beverage cans is approximately 475 billion cans per year worldwide, 100 billion per year in the US, 52 billion per year in Europe, growing about 3 percent annually. Recycling the aluminum pulltabs is definitely a clever and very creative way that actually makes you feel like you are doing something positive for the planet.

Shanghai Metal Corporation does not take any part in the handbag purchase. We are proud of initiatives such as Escama Studio as an empowering cooperative bringing hope and happiness to the community and the society as a whole.

Four Our Brazilian Readers: A Indústria Siderúrgica Torna-se Global

The Steel Industry Is Becoming Global

The steel industry is becoming global, said Nippon Steel’s and Sumitomo Metal Industries’ President Kosei Shindo. On an endeavor to seek new opportunities across the globe due to less strong metal demand growth in Japan, Shindo partnered ArcelorMittal in November to acquire a steel plant in the U.S., as well as co-controls Latin America’s largest producjapan4er of the metal used in ships, cars and buildings, Usinas Siderurgicas de Minas Gerais SA, a Brazilian steelmaker. In October 2012, Shindo said that profit in the June quarter fell 24 percent as steel imports from China put pressure on prices.

Brazil is also known for being home to the world’s biggest iron-ore producer, Vale SA. Having mining as primary business, iron ore is a crucial raw material in the production of steel. However, even giant steelmaker Vale is feeling the pressure of the international metal industry, and sees prices rebounding in the coming months as supply growth slows and higher cost mines close at a time of strengthening Chinese demand.

japan3

Iron ore, which entered a bear market in March amid higher supply from Australia and Brazil, rose in July for the second consecutive month on speculation that demand from China, where Vale sends more than half its shipments, is improving.

japan2

India, on the other hand, sees a brighter future in the iron ore market as its steel industry grows and the nation seeks to raise living standards. India may become a net importer of iron ore this year with steelmakers including JSW Steel Ltd. (JSTL), the nation’s third-largest producer, buying as much as 15 million tons from abroad, the Federation of Indian Mineral Industries said, according to Bloomberg.

Globalization of the steel market might be a good thing, but it is necessary to keep an eye on it so no one gets caught by surprise.
