Chinese New Year

The Chinese New Year is approaching and people in China are all getting ready to travel back to their hometown and meet their families. The Chinese New Year, also called the Spring Festival, is the most important traditional festival and most important celebration for families in China. The Chinese calendar is associated with the Chinese Zodiac, it is a repeating cycle of 12 years where each year being represented by an animal and 2015 is the year of goat.

Chinese New Year Decorations and symbols

Before the D-day, family buys presents, decorations, food, new clothes, people have their hair cut and the houses are cleaned. The aim is to get rid of any bad luck from the previous year and clear the way for good luck.

Lights like Christmas lights will light up homes and doors & window are often newly painted in red. On New Years Eve, both narrow strips of red paper (Chunlian or Spring Couplets), and bunches of firecracker decorations are hung on doors to bring good luck. The Chunlian decorations are marked with messages of good luck. In the first 3 days of Chinese New Year celebrations, people light firecrackers, making a series of loud bangs, which is believed to scare away bad luck.

The color red is chosen because it is believed to be a lucky color and it is supposed to chase off the monster Nian, who is thought to come on New Year Eve. The color gold symbolizes wealth.

A red lantern is a symbol of luck and prosperity but also as a mean of “lighting the way” for the family’s Kitchen God on an important annual mission to see the Jade Emperor. People want the Kitchen God to give a good report of their family to the Jade Emperor so that they will have a good harvest and make more money in the coming year.

Chinese New Year Food

Certain dishes are eaten during the Chinese New Year for their symbolic meaning, which is based on their pronunciations or appearance.

The word “fish” in Chinese sounds like surplus. For Chinese, it is good to have a surplus at the end of the year, because it is thought that if you save something at the end of the year, then you can make more in the next year.

Dumplings are a classic Chinese food. Different dumpling fillings have different meanings. On New Year’s Eve it is a tradition to eat dumplings with cabbage and radish, implying that one’s skin will become fair and one’s mood will become gentle.

Dumplings (photo from magazine.fourseasons.com)

The longevity of noodles symbolize a long life. Longevity noodles are longer than normal ones.

Spring rolls get their name because they are traditionally eaten during the Spring Festival. Fried spring rolls look like gold bars and symbolizes a wish for prosperity.

Using pipes for creating a spectacular culinary experience

There are many restaurants in the world which are good, interesting, serving nice food, having brilliant staff or location. If you want to set up your own business, open your restaurant and be successful you’d better be different. Offer something different so people can enjoy a wonderful atmosphere while eating, as did one restaurant in South London and a coffee shop in Cape Town.

bangalore-express

Bangalore Express Restaurant

closeup-pipe-fittings-viewThis Indian restaurant located in South London with design studio Outline matched pipes and fittings together which is nowadays one of the hottest industrial trends for restaurant design scene. Arrangement of pipes, fitting ladders and focal boxes created each space into a separate area but it still maintains the cohesion throughout the restaurant. The eye of customers naturally follow the pattern from one side to the other. This would never be accomplished with wood. Pipes can easily create ladders and handrails. All the Outline team had to do was insert fitting into each pipe section and then secure those pieces into wall. Pipes and fittings stand up the hustle bustle of hospitality industry without any problem. Although it looks dangerous, waitresses can relax and smile, they are secured by almost indestructible pipe.

Lamps can have a soul

Last time I wanted to buy a lamp, interesting, functional, eco-friendly, “with a soul”. I went to a shop and I looked around. Nothing. Is it really hard to make things in a different way? All you need is just some creativity.

Lamps made from used coffee filters

nice lamp

Many cities all over the world are full of coffee fans. Small cafes or Starbucks everywhere. Now one designer from New York collects and converts old coffee filters and recycles them to make beautiful lampshades. Because of the soft tones from the coffee stains, lamp gives a romantic low-light.

Lamps made from steel steamers

Designer Nadia Belalia deconstructed the lowly kitchen utensil into stunning lamps. She works with classic collapsible steamers and takes the natural geometry of the perforated steel wings and expands them into satisfying shapes.

Architectural Triumphs With Galvanized Steel

Corrugated and sheet metals such as galvanized steel have come a long way in the architectural and construction communities from when they were simply a strong and effective material used as roofing. It has come to the point now where they can be the feature of a home or building and used both inside and out.

image

This idea of galvanized steel as a universal building material is shown below where the house features has used it for both a roofing material and as exterior wall cladding. This industrial appearing material, when combined with the natural aesthetic of wood creates a juxtaposition between man and nature, especially given the lush backdrop of rural Australia.

image

From an interior perspective there is an increasing trend to use both corrugated, flat and shaped galvanized steel for both ceilings and walls. The remarkable example below featured in the master bedroom of  a modern home show how the metallic surface of galvanized steel can add a touch of modernity to a design, with the corrugated sheeting offering a texture rarely seen in the interior of a home.

image

The versatility of this material is undeniable, with designers stretching their imagination to previously-thought impossible lengths. As is witnessed in the examples below; the ability to bend, shape, curve and erect this material at extreme pitches can lead to some outstanding design possibilities. The home on the left features a nearly 100% external composition of pre-painted corrugated galvanized steel proving the residents with high bush-fire protection, energy efficiency as well as a remarkable aesthetic!

image

In contrast to these curves seen above the design featured below presents an opposing dynamic of this material. With its sheer pitched sides, long straight lengths and intense angles it is hard not to appreciate the capabilities this material offers to architects and the remarkable results that are left for the eye to enjoy.

A Brazilian’s Take on Legalizing Graffiti In Urban Streets of Brazil

In Brazil graffiti used to be considered illegal. Not seen as a form of artistic expression, graffiti was banned from all public spaces, while the “grafiteiros” (taggers) risked their lives in the middle of the night climbing walls and fences in order to leave their mark. The issue is that the grafiteiro just “wants to put his name on the wall, to be famous, and is a vandalist, but the [street] artist is interested in aesthetics and community”, says Rio street artist Smael Vagner.

grafite7

Pichação (tagging) and grafite (graffiti) are two distinctive street art styles in Brazil. And it’s been a long journey for these street artists to convince the population, the city and the nation that their work is art, something that should be appreciated and valued.

grafite14

Graffiti or street art increased so much in popularity and started getting large attention of street artists from around the world, that in March 2009, the Brazilian government passed a law making street art and graffiti legal, if done with the consent of building owners.

grafite1

It is a huge step towards recognition, appreciation, reflection of the evolving landscape in Brazilian street art, an emerging and divergent movement in the global street art landscape. More than that, graffiti in Brazil is being used now to protect façades from pichação. Interestingly, some kind of ethic code in the graffiti world seems to exist between taggers and street artists; a tagger who imprints his marks on top of another street art is ultimately insulting the street artist, which is seen as breaking a “silent” code. It could even endanger in a dangerous rivalry between the two of them, something that the city, the people and the nation do not want to see: more violence.

grafite4

In Rio de Janeiro, graffiti is everywhere. It exists in all corners of the city, from the favelas to upper class neighborhoods, from residential, commercial to institutional. It is bold in scale and aesthetics and is anything but graffiti. But graffiti art is not only an aesthetic choice, but an economic choice; painting a façade with art may be cheaper than another mode of beautification.

grafite5

Personally, I think grafite brings more than decoration to a neighborhood, gives its people and its community a more personal feeling, brings the people closer to each other and to the community itself, refreshes the site, signals thieves and vandalists that the community cares about its people and that is not a place for them, offers citizens the opportunity to voice their opinion by art expression and young people to have a new perspective in life. Hence, street art has a crucial societal role in Brazil, and in many other countries. And I really hope street art movement never stops, keeps progressing and improving till the day people, communities, cities, states and nation are all together supporting an environment in which it can prosper.

Style with Stainless Steel

Since the beginning of the 21st century, Stainless Steel has been a very popular finish in private and commercial kitchens. Many homes utilize Stainless Steel in appliances including the refrigerators, microwaves, ovens, etc. Now, Stainless Steel is finding its way onto more surfaces than just in appliances.

stainlesssteelkitchen

More often, home buyers will come across Stainless Steel sheets onto the walls in kitchens and other rooms. In fact, Stainless Steel has been very popular for its attractive surface. Many choose to use Stainless Steel for its easy to clean exterior and its hygienic surface. Food preparation is a lot easier with Stainless Steel as it is less likely to harbor bacteria when cleaned than other surfaces.   Since its surface is highly attractive to many consumers, more and more individuals are styling their homes and business with Stainless Steel!

If you are going to use Stainless Steel to your surfaces, let Shanghai Metal Corporation teach you how!

1

You must close the breakers that are providing you electricity. After you turn off you’re your breakers, place an non contact electrical tester against the toggle switches. Also, place a noncontact electrical tester against any electrical outlets on the wall after that you wish to cover with Stainless Steel. The tester will light up and sound an alarm if electricity is still present. If the tester shows the sign of the presence of electricity, make sure to turn off the switches and outlets.

An example of a non contact electrical tester

2

Clear away the screws that are holding any target wall plates to toggle the switches and electrical outlets. Afterwards, take away the wall plates from the wall. You should leave the toggle switches and electrical outlets connected to the wall.

3

SMC suggests to spray a grease-cutting cleaner onto your target wall. Clean the surface of the wall with a sponge, scrub brush, or towels. Remove excess cleaner from the wall with paper towels.

4

Utilize an 80-grit sandpaper to remove any bumps and imperfections on the wall. Keep sanding the wall until the surface of the wall is flat. This is important because the Stainless Steel sheets must adhere to the surface and sanded surface will help increase glue adhesion.

5

With a caulk gun, pull back the push rod above the handle. The push rod should lock in place. Make sure to add at least a 10-ounce tube of silicone adhesive caulk into the gun. When you are done, pull the trigger to secure the tube.

6

Use utility shears to remove the tip from the tube of caulk. If you want a larger opening on the end of the caulk tube, then cut the tip further back. Place a Phillips screwdriver into the tip and push the end of the screwdriver through the caulk tube to allow the caulk to flow from the tube.

usingcaulk

7

Add a liberal amount of silicone adhesive around the perimeter of the wall. Apply more silicone in a zigzag pattern within the perimeter. Make sure you have enough tubes of silicone adhesive caulk for your wall. For reference, a 10-ounce tube of silicone adhesive caulk is necessary for every 20 linear feet of Stainless Steel.

8

Make sure to hold the Stainless Steel sheet at an angle. The bottom of the Stainless Steel sheet must rest against the bottom of the wall. Any cutouts in the Stainless Steel sheet should line up with any items that are permanently installed in the wall, which includes toggle switches and electrical outlets.

9

Slant the Stainless Steel sheet toward the wall until the whole Stainless Steel sheet is against the wall. You may slide the sheet into position once it is against the wall if it is off a bit since there is a leeway time before the adhesive sets.

10

Tape the Stainless Steel sheet into place with several pieces of duct tape until the adhesive has set.

11

Replace the electrical outlet and toggle switch covers. You can now turn on the circuit breakers.

12

Make sure to not touch the wall for at least 24 hours. You should leave the tape on the Stainless Steel sheets for at least a whole day. Cooler temperatures and higher humidity may increase drying times so try to adjust accordingly.
