How Will Washing Machines Look Like in Future?

We can’t imagine our lives without smart phones, internet, TV, cars, but what about washing machines? Would you be able to carry the water outside the house, soak, beat, scrub, rinse the clothes few times a week? According to a 1886 calculation women had to fetch water at least 8 times every day from a pump, well or spring.

The history of washing clothes and washing machines
A washing machine – 1930

To reduce a manual labor spent on washing clothes, washing machine’s technology was invented and developed. The first washing machines were hand-operated and constructed from wood, but later generations of washing machines were made of metals that allowed to set a fire below the washtub and keep the water warm during the day. The first evidence of ancient washing soaps was found at Sapo Hill in Rome when the ashes containing the fat of sacrificial animals was used as a soap.

The future of washing clothes and washing machines

One thing is sure – we won’t wash our clothes manually!

Swirl Electricity-Free Washing Machine

This concept of clothes washer was meant to be used in those areas where there is a bad access to the electricity and water. The washing tub has a handle that allows it to be wheeled to the source of the water. After that the “ball” becomes a thing for playing – the motion scrubs the clothes. It can be also used for transporting water for the whole family.

The Wall-Hanging Washer

The Shine concept from the Electrolux Design Team in Italy considers the fact that by year 2050 everybody will leave in urban environment and the living space will be limited. They created a tiny washing machine that can be hanging on the wall or integrated beneath a bathroom counter top. Lights are counting down the remaining time and giving an amazing lightning into a room.

The Re-cycle Laundry Center

Designers Fernanda Villanueva and Arturo Ariño got inspired in not only an appearance of the recycle symbol but also in words “reuse, reduce, recycle”.  The concept has three separated pods, the first one is a washing machine, a dryer and the third one is a water tank/filtration unit. Retro style of telling time

Do you love retro style and you are planning to buy new watch now? Then you might be interested in a new design Retro Timer released by American clothing brand Fossil and London fashion studio Eley Kishimoto.

Retro Timer

Retro Timer has been influenced by design in 1950’s, it has a large hand to mark the hours, but the traditional hand marking minutes has been replaced by a rotating red aluminium disc.

They wanted to use the red disc somehow and then just put a point on that disc to have it as the minutes. This way they accidentally developed a new way of telling time. (via Dezeen )

A vertical bathroom !

In some countries a people’s living space  has been becoming smaller and smaller. There might be few reasons : overpopulated city, too expensive rents, enjoying tiny minimalist architecture and design and many others. Probably the smallest parts of our homes are bathrooms and we want to save space as much as we can.

Saving space design

This vertical stainless steel bathroom full of secret shelves, toilet and even shower looks a bit like a space ship bathroom, right from the future!

“The Vertebrae” was designed by Paul Hernon and he got inspired mostly from functional modern architecture and from our own natural spinal system.

Each level of series independently rotating vertebrae serves for different needs. Toilet with side compartments, sink and basin, storage spaces and a shower with pull-out shower heads. All of these components can be folded up when not in use.

A toilet

This design idea is not just for luxury hotels or offices to impress their customers but it is mostly a space-saving tactic for tiny personal apartments or condo bathrooms with no room for all of these amenities. Stainless steel gives it a futuristic look with a clean and modern feeling.

How to improve the taste of tap water

The taste of tap water isn’t as good as it used to be. The water pollution is one of the most serious problems in the world. More countries don’t have drinkable water so many of people just started to buy bottles of water in shops. BUT! Don’t forget that you can improve the taste of tap water and purify it at home by yourselves, you just need some copper.

We drink water every day and drinking safe water is extremely important for our health. Specific amounts of lead, arsenic or radioactive particles may lead to illness and even to death. There are few methods of purifying water and I will introduce you the way using copper.

Copper-zinc method

This water filtration technology (sold under name KDF) uses granules of  copper and zinc allow to purify water. These copper and zinc molecules are like different poles on a battery. Certain water contaminants are drawn toward the zinc while others are drawn toward copper. Chemical reactions are releasing ozone and other particles which can kill bacteria and organisms but it can’t remove organic contaminants and pesticides. It can effectively removes metals and chlorine.

Crystal and copper purifying water

Still vessels by Formafantasma

Studio Formafantasma has created a collection of engraved crystal and copper vessels with charcoal to purify and serve water. Activation of charcoal perforates it with tiny holes, increases its surface area and removes impurities from water.

Designers made these vessels of these materials because they wanted to make from water purification a daily routine.  Patterns engraved into the crystal represent a microscopic view of bacteria found in rivers in 19th century. This collection was a part of an exhibition in Milan.

So what do you think? It is modern, original, useful and can make your water tasty or as designers describe it “the most humble and fundamental of all drinks”.

Architectural Triumphs With Galvanized Steel

Corrugated and sheet metals such as galvanized steel have come a long way in the architectural and construction communities from when they were simply a strong and effective material used as roofing. It has come to the point now where they can be the feature of a home or building and used both inside and out.

image

This idea of galvanized steel as a universal building material is shown below where the house features has used it for both a roofing material and as exterior wall cladding. This industrial appearing material, when combined with the natural aesthetic of wood creates a juxtaposition between man and nature, especially given the lush backdrop of rural Australia.

image

From an interior perspective there is an increasing trend to use both corrugated, flat and shaped galvanized steel for both ceilings and walls. The remarkable example below featured in the master bedroom of  a modern home show how the metallic surface of galvanized steel can add a touch of modernity to a design, with the corrugated sheeting offering a texture rarely seen in the interior of a home.

image

The versatility of this material is undeniable, with designers stretching their imagination to previously-thought impossible lengths. As is witnessed in the examples below; the ability to bend, shape, curve and erect this material at extreme pitches can lead to some outstanding design possibilities. The home on the left features a nearly 100% external composition of pre-painted corrugated galvanized steel proving the residents with high bush-fire protection, energy efficiency as well as a remarkable aesthetic!

image

In contrast to these curves seen above the design featured below presents an opposing dynamic of this material. With its sheer pitched sides, long straight lengths and intense angles it is hard not to appreciate the capabilities this material offers to architects and the remarkable results that are left for the eye to enjoy.
