A Simple Solution to Water Shortages

The world is running out of fresh water and population growth remains on an exponential trajectory. Regions around the globe have been suffering though droughts for a number of years now but in 2014 they reached a catastrophic level.

Both the USA and Australia are reporting record droughts with California and Queensland being hit the hardest.  The drought in California has caused the sate to lose 63 trillion gallons of water and 80% of Queensland is suffering through severe droughts.

Despite our depleting water resources one of the largest allocations of fresh water is for watering lawns and other landscaping activities.  Recently California passed laws that levy fines on people who water their lawns and this has caused outrage as it has damaged the aesthetics of peoples property.  However, there is another way to get a great looking lawn without using a drop of water.

Artificial grass is the future of outdoor landscaping as conventional lawns are becoming socially and environmentally unacceptable given water shortages across the world. In the USA 9 Billion gallons are used everyday simply for watering lawns.

This waste could be entirely eliminated through artificial grass as it requires absolutely no water. Furthermore, artificial grass can be customized very easily to fit any environment.  This means artificial grass can be used to increase drainage which in turn means more water will be sent back into the municipal systems rather than going to waste.  The environmental and water benefits of artificial grass are massive and will be the future of our new environmentally friendly suburban yards.

Ebola- Combating an out of Control Virus Through Surveillance

Africa is experiencing the worst Ebola outbreak in the continents history.  What started as a few cases in Guinea has now spread to Liberia, Sierra Leon and Nigeria along with a few reported cases in Europe and North America.  The potential loss of life from this virus is only expected to rise as it spreads into the overcrowded cities of West Africa.  Along with the potential loss of life there are also negative effects on the economy. Sierra Leon has seen their economy deflate 30% as a result of the outbreak and Guinea projected GDP growth has fallen from 4.5% to 3.5%.

Researches and doctors all over the world have been working on cure but as of now the best strategy they have is to quarantine the infected. However, many infected people break out of the quarantine zones simply because the regional governments and the World Health Organization (WHO) do not have the resources to maintain the quarantines as they cannot patrol them effectively.  The solution to this problem lies in surveillance technology.

Setting up surveillance technology around the quarantine zones would allow the WHO along with the regional governments and aid agencies to monitor every aspect of these zones and most importantly they would be able to detect breaches instantly.  Furthermore, the use of constant personnel patrols would no longer be necessary as their role can be allocated to emergency response which means fewer infected people will leave the quarantine.  The application of surveillance technology in combating Ebola can also be used on international borders as means to monitor undocumented and documented people who may be carrying the virus.

One of the leading pieces of surveillance technology is Shanghai Metal Corporations surveillance camera.  The camera has both medium and long distance laser night vision, and is capable of targeting objects from as far as 2 km away.  This product has been widely used for coastal defense, urban look out and other security applications.

Taking Action to Lower Water Consumption

Do you have genuine lawn in your yard? If so, have you ever estimated how much water you need to consume in order to keep it fresh and how much does it cost you? Well, according to an article in slate.com, an average American lawn gulps down 21,600 gallons of water per year. That adds about $42 to your water bill. The United States Environmental Protection Agency also states that the Americans consume approximately $474 every year on water and sewage charges plus additional $230 on water’s heating costs. So, every single method of saving water has value. A good article for economical irrigation methods can be read here. Especially in areas suffering from drought one must take these tips into serious consideration. Some regions take actions in order to promote their residents to save water. For example in L.A. region, a superhero has emerged to take action.

Meet the Lawn Dude – the new mascot of the fight against California’s drought. Lawn Dude was unveiled last Thursday by the Southern California Water Committee, a nonprofit advocacy group, and Clear Channel Outdoor as part of a campaign to get southern Californians to conserve water during the state’s protracted drought. He pops out in billboards across the region reminding the people not to consume too much water. Lawn Dude is to support the region’s goal to cut water consumption by 20%. In order to get to know him more visit his Twitter site.
