“Made in China”, the rise of a new label

From djcadchina.files.wordpress.com

“Made in China” is probably what you find the most since decades on all the products you are buying during your shopping sessions. Your outfit is probably manufactured by some Chinese people thought.

But let’s come back on the reputation of the “Made in China” seen by the Western countries. When you hear the mention “Made in China”, you probably suppose products of bad quality, bad conditions of the workers and reminds you some scandals which happened at some times.

We can’t say that these facts don’t exist, but we can moderate what you’re thinking.

From veille.tn

Chinese workers are not today working for $1 per day, in wretched conditions. In fact, in 2013, the average cost of labor in China is only the average of half the cost in the US and increase each year on an average of 20%, and could reach 60% in 2015 according to the Boston Consulting Group.

China is today too expensive for most of the western companies of the textile industry which desire to reduce their cost of production. Western countries rather relocate their production in India, Philippines and Bangladesh which are looking like Chine 15 years before.

The problem of most of the Chinese companies is not limited technologies, or unskilled workers, the biggest problem which explain sometimes the fact that the quality is not good enough is really strict bill of specifications. Western companies want large quantities in very short delays at really low prices. The thing is that today, to respect the short delays of the Western companies, some Chinese companies rather deliver products with a lower quality by respecting the delays and low prices.

China have been during thousands of years for Western countries the manufacturer of products really appreciated as silk, spices, jewelry, cashmere, carried on the silk road in direction to Europe, which were synonyms of a high quality and a know-how inimitable.

Today Chinese companies want to go back to this time when hallmarks of Chinese products were synonym of high quality. The Chinese government is investing in some companies as Xiaomij and Lenovo which are breaking the rules by creative innovating products making forget for the buyers the “Made in China” label.

With a massive workforce and a government engaging his companies to innovation, Chinese companies should see their reputation raised in the next few years. As an encouraging observation, today we found 6 companies based in China on Forbes’ Most Innovative Companies List.

From “Traditional Manufacturing” into “Smart Manufacturing”

It is expected that China will become the world’s largest manufacturer by 2025. Over the past decade, China’s manufacturing sector has made large contributions to the country’s and also the world’s economy.

China has become a big manufacturing country but has not yet been a powerful one. The main problems in Chinese manufacturing are:

  • Weak independent innovation ability
  • High dependence on foreign countries in core technologies
  • Low resource use efficiency

Premier Li Keqiang  announced on March 25 China’s plan to focus on these three issues and to upgrade its manufacturing capacity for the next decades, leading China into a more competitive international manufacturer. This program, “Made in China 2025”, aims for a greener and more intelligent manufacturing with the use of the internet, improving innovation ability, integrate informatization, industrialization and bring the economy towards a higher sustainable growth.

Ten sectors have been identified as priorities:

  1. New information technology
  2. High-end numerically-controlled machine tools and robotics
  3. Aerospace equipment
  4. Ocean engineering equipment and ships with high technology
  5. Advanced railway traffic equipment
  6. Energy saving and new energy vehicles
  7. Power equipment
  8. New materials
  9. Biological medicine and high-performance medical devices
  10. Agricultural production machinery

Shanghai Metal Corporation serves the world’s businesses as an integrated global manufacturer, exporter, and supplier. We stand firm to our philosophy in bringing value across the globe and we always dedicate our effort to provide quality products and reliable services. Our commitment pushes us to continuously put efforts in innovation and improve our manufacturing capacity. Shanghai Metal Corporation, alongside with China, will continuously work hard in the future to become a better manufacturer and bring value across the world. We hope to change the world’s perception of Chinese goods from simply “made in China” to “innovated in China”.

Container Homes – The Illegal Saviors of Economies And the Environment

The ports of many import-driven countries including the USA are filled with used shipping containers that are never shipped back to their original destinations.  Therefore considering the well-being of the environment, getting new ways of use for them is crucial. Building affordable homes for many families is the best option, but how to influence the local decision makers to offer building permits.

7f5c5c958b9b6c9b2c89bd54ae3a1700

The valuable resources of used shipping containers will remain as an unused asset if the decision makers do not allow the installation of shipping container houses. The roots of the problem are not on the operational level, in other words,  in the daily application and inspection processes. In many countries there are protocols on how large, what colour or which material the houses in a specific suburb should be made of. The problem is that the standards do not say much about special building materials, let alone shipping containers.

The inspectors can only follow the protocol, that’s a fact. Therefore people should work on influencing the upper level authorities, unions and city councils.

Social media offers great tools for that. It is important that people keep on writing blogs about the benefits of shipping container architecture. It is also equally important to share other people’s work on social media. The optimum use of Facebook, Twitter, Google Plus, WordPress  etc. enables the maximum reach of one’s work. Maximum reach implies that the content will eventually reach the decision makers or the people who influence them. Moreover, as we already analyzed in our former article, this industry develops really slowly, so all the counter measures should be designed for a long run.

Besides quality, quantity also counts. The decision makers also suffer from bounded rationality. Instead of only few experts, by social media they can be influences of thousands of experts, those who want to build affordable homes and to help to save the environment and the economy. Even though it sounds like a long shot but it’s still an implementable way.

Shanghai Metal Corporation also contributes to this good cause by creating content related to container architecture and sharing others’ work. SMC is a pioneer in providing shipping containers and container buildings for many countries. You can also join our social media communities.

Unlimited Possibilities With a Limited Negative Impact

More than ever we faced limited resources on the earth. We can think about foods, fresh water and gas reserve. Growing every year is now more and more difficult to do, especially in the raw mineral and non-renewable energy sectors. In fact we need to use a lot non-renewable energy to extract limited raw minerals at the end the cost for the planet is high and irreversible.

image

Some metal industries are now aware about this problem and they start to find a way to limit their negative impact on the planet. Studies already proved that we can recycle carbon steel scarp without any limit of time. Even if this resource is limited on the earth we can recast infinitely without reducing the quality of the product. Therefore, this product becoming more and more attractive in a long term views in our economy because it can be connected with several projects. So now the challenge is to rethink about how to use each scrap metal resource.

image

In another perspective, recycle iron significantly reduced our consumption of non-renewable energy, and our CO2 emissions. Indeed, the CO2 emission is limited by the carbon steel scrap transportation to the recycling shop, the overall impact is nothing compare to the extraction process.

Strange Things People Steal

Desperate times call for desperate measures. The aftermath of the world financial crisis has left some people thinking outside the box to get by. Despite the effort and penalty, a lot of these items don’t yield much in resale value, yet still remain widely stolen items.

Copper

Copper backgrounds

Bucking the trend, stolen copper is valuable as scrap because the metal is used for so many items—from fiber optics to plumbing to anything electrical.

“Copper prices have leveled since the recession, but they’re still high enough to have people steal it,” said Michael Gurka, managing director of Spectrum Asset Management, a Chicago investment firm.

Manhole Covers

manholecover

If history has shown us anything, it’s that thieves don’t mind being in a business with razor-thin profit margins. Manhole covers don’t fetch much on the black market, but it didn’t deter one criminal group in New York USA. More than 30 were stolen in one season to the dismay of maintenance workers and midnight strollers alike.

Fire Hydrant Caps

firehydrant

Hydrants are usually seen in picturesque scenes of hot days and water fights, but today the dark world of hydrant cap theft is being exposed. In California USA, more than 100 were stolen at a cost of $100 each to replace, so that was $10K no one planned on having to spend.

Bleachers

bleachers

These thieves in Pennsylvania and New York left standing room only crowds in its wake. Possibly just a rival school prank, these thieves have capitalized on the apparent new target in metal thievery.

Bridges

bridge

Thieves in the Czech Republic made off with an entire 10-ton bridge. Using forged paperwork, the crew convinced rail officials that the bridge was supposed to come down to make way for a new cycling route. If this crew could make a bridge disappear, it’s scary to think what they could achieve if they really applied themselves.

At Shanghai Metal Corporation we also realize the importance of these metals and manufacture value added copper products.
