The attraction for copper nowadays

Du cuivre

It’s a good and an unfortunate assessment at the same time that we are able to do each year.

In fact, the attraction for copper have increased the business of this type of metal for manufacturers but unluckily for our customers, the steal of copper is a real problem in Europe, until the point that it became a scourge for European countries.

Italy is one of the most important victims of these thefts in Europe. According to the newspaper Le Figaro, between 2010 and 2011 the number of thefts has known an increase of 300%, from 408 to 1226 cases. These thefts represent almost 631 tons of copper which have been stealed during this period. And the numbers are not decreasing. In Belgium the observation is even worst, from 290 cases of thefts in 2009, the Infrabel Group reported 1 362 cases in 2012. The value of the copper robbed was approximately of 8 millions of Euros which is significant for the Infrabel Group according to the Fedra newspaper.

In the United Kingdom, France and other European countries, the observations are the same. In the UK, the police have made of this problem their second preoccupation after terrorism, which is quite representative of the scope of the thefts.

From thorneandderrick.com

The railways are not the only targets of the organized gangs. Electrical communications, communication networks, construction sites or private houses, are also concerned about this problem. The fact of stealing is not the only problem for these companies, there is many consequences for the companies’ victims of the piracies.

These thefts are creating delays for the companies, and for the railways companies, the cost is huge. In the United Kingdom, the thefts and delays of the trains have created 770 million pounds or 900 million Euros in 2011 of loss. In Belgium these thefts have resulted of 66 440 minutes of delay for the SNBC Group.

From LeSoir.be

The cause of the increase in the attraction for copper is that the copper is becoming rare and as a consequence the price is sharply rising. In 2011, the price of a tone of copper represented 8 000 Euros, five times more than ten years before. Sold in the black market the copper means a lot of money for the organized gangs.

The copper is not the only metal attracting these groups, zinc, steel and nickel are also famous metals experiencing a resurgence of thefts.

The Walking under Ladder Superstition Has Its Origin in Ancient Egypt

When you see a black cat crossing your path, you panic? When it is Friday the 13th you rather choose not to go anywhere and just stay at home hidden under the blanket? Well, you are definitely superstitious! Sometimes I am just wondering whether there is a logic explanation and origin of the superstitions or it is just a plain common sense.

The walking under ladder superstition

Back in ancient Egypt, priests placed ladders in the tombs for dead people, so if they wanted they might have decided to ascend upward. The created area between the ladder and the wall was believed to be the space of spirits. Ladder leaned against the wall and formed the natural triangle that was believed to be sacred. It was also a space to be avoided as spirits rest there.

Those who somehow walked under the ladder could placate the disturbed spirits by placing their thumb between their index and middle finger. That is the method of warding off the bad luck. People who walked under the ladder in Middle Age in Christian Europe would cross their fingers on both hands, sign of a cross protected them from any evil lurking in the space between the ladder and wall. The interesting fact was that if you were forced to walk under the ladder against your will, you could receive something you wished for.

Although there are still people who are superstitious, nowadays ladders have become more a tool that can cause a lot of accidents. According to the study of American Journal of Preventative Medicine, there were 2.1 million of people sent to hospital because of ladders in years between 1990 and 2005.

Shanghai Metal Corporation offers aluminum and aluminum profiles for ladders. Customers don’t have to be worried about the safety, we offer high-quality products. Fight against smog !

Problems with smog are now not only Chinese issue. The number of cities dealing with air pollution is increasing and you have probably heard about current heavy pollution in Paris, a city of love. But it isn’t very romantic to spend a day with a mask on your face, is it?

Smog-eating-tiles
Students at the University of California

A team of ambitious students at the University of California came with an amazing idea and developed a great weapon against air pollution. They created roof tiles coated with titanium dioxide which can break down smog-forming particles in the atmosphere and eliminate a big percentage of nitrogen oxide gas emitted by cars and power plants. Titanium dioxide is inexpensive chemical found in a huge number of everyday products. The interesting fact is that it is so inexpensive that the whole average-sized residential roof can be covered with it for $5.0.  Smog is cause by nitrogen oxide gases that react to sunlight and students discovered that using these special roof tiles can remove 88 to 97 of this oxide pollution and break down into less harmful compounds.

The Architectural Embodiment of the New Asian Century

Architecture is often viewed as form of art and beauty used to illustrate humanities creativity and imagination in a physical form. It embodies the mood of an era and the limit of technological advancement.

Shanghai skyline

However, power, prestige and wealth have always been illustrated through architecture.  The cathedrals of Europe were always the tallest, largest and most beautiful buildings in the cities as at one time the Catholic Church was the most powerful institution in Europe.  The modern world has seen religious power replaced with financial power and its symbols of importance and prestige are Skyscrapers.

Vaticano in Rome

Asia is developing at an incredible pace and soon the economy of China will surpass that of the USA.  Not surprisingly Asia has also become the new capital for skyscraper construction as the continent illustrates its new found financial power in physical form. One must only look at the skylines of Hong Kong, Shanghai and Taipei to see that Asia is a rising financial power.  As with all monuments a level of grandeur is expected and the nations of Asia have most certainly delivered.

Skylines of Hong Kong

Taipei 101, Jin Mao tower and PETRONAS Towers all show a beautiful mix of inspired Asian design along with a Western embodiment of power.  Today the Majority of the 50 tallest building are in Asia and this trend shows no signs of slowing down.

Shanghai Metal Corporation is one of the leading suppliers of glass curtain walls which are required for the construction of modern skyscrapers.  Making certain that the glass of these new buildings is fastened securely means that we can continue to marvel at Asias new architectural prowess with the confidence that it will stand the test of time.

Solar Charging Car – The Next Big Thing

We may have seen almost all kinds of cars, hybrid cars running on both petrol and ethanol or electric cars that rely on chargeable batteries, but I bet you haven’t seen this one: solar charging car.

solar2

Volvo launched a solar charging car known as V60 Plug-in Hybrid. The new technology was presented as the winner of the 2013 Switch to Pure Volvo Pavilion Design competition held by Volvo in Italy last fall. The creation was designed by Alvin Huang’s Synthesis Design + Architecture and serves as a portable solar charging station for the first-ever diesel plug-in hybrid.

volvo1

How does it work? The car is charged over the course of a day when parked beneath a mesh structure made of photovoltaic cell, which generates energy from the sun or indoor lighting. Once charging is complete, the structure is able to collapse and fit into the V60’s trunk.

volvo2

“The creation of ‘Pure Tension’ is proof of how modern and innovative Volvo Cars’ mindset is. The Pure Tension pavilion demonstrates performance, form and technology, just like the new Volvo cars.”, says Mr. Huang. Volvo added by describing the new creation as a vision of the future where cars can simply charge themselves by deploying structures such as this.

solar3

Practicality, however, may say otherwise. The current design, certainly interesting to look at, may be a little tricky when charging your car, let’s say in a parking lot. But even if you wanted to purchase the plug-in right away, according to Volvo, the structure is currently for demonstration only, with no plans for production in the near future. However, the V60 Plug-In Hybrid will be available in Europe, while a gasoline-only version of the V60 can be seen in the United States already.

volvo3

More interestingly, I’d say, is the fact that the new technology provided by the V60 addresses the issue of sustainability in the form of combination of EV and solar; a tensioned and perforated HDPE Mesh skin with embedded PV transparent panels and a perimeter ring made of carbon fiber rods. Environment-friendly, continuous and sensual, the design of V60 offers an organic sense to the spectators, as well as invites them on a visual interaction.

Containers – The New Political Soapbox

The traditional soapbox has been proved outmoded this month – the must-have accessory for the modern politician in Pakistan seems to be the shipping container.

imrankhansspeechAccording to the BBC, even Imran Khan is said to have spent more than $120,000 (£70,000) on one. “These shipping containers that you have placed on all four sides are not enough to stop this ocean of people!” declared cricketer-turned-politician Imran Khan at a rally on Tuesday night. He was addressing Pakistan’s Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif.

Originally, the Pakistani government strategically placed a number of shipping containers near political institutions, ready to be placed as a blockade for potential protesters. But party workers have discovered that containers make excellent stages for rallies, and they are now an indispensable item for any big political event.

containerblockades

To the endless interest of Pakistan’s media, they can also be converted into mobile homes. In January last year, ul-Qadri held a four-day sit-in in Islamabad. While his supporters were out on the street, he slept inside his customised container, fitted with heating and a bathroom.

containerprotest

It was later reported that Khan’s party had had a container converted at a cost of some 12.5m Pakistani rupees ($124,000; £75,000). It is equipped with meeting facilities, a bathroom, and a nifty spiral staircase leading to the roof – and is supposedly bomb-proof. See our previous articles regarding container homes and their increased popularity in the USA and Europe.

Over 5000 Years Old Copper Pipe From the Pyramid of Cheops in Egypt Could Still Be Used Today

Copper pipe and tubing is one of the most corrosion-resistant materials we have in the plumbing industry. Coppersmiths, the ancient Egyptians were early developers of pipe and the techniques of making copper alloys. In the beginning, of course, their pipe and fittings were very crude. Like the Mesopotamians, they used clay pipe made from a combination of straw and clay. First it was dried in the sun, and then baked in ovens. As they improved upon their clay sewer pipe, the Egyptians were able to drain the low-lying portions of the Nile Valley, and gradually the entire region evolved into a fertile garden.

pipe2

The outstanding fact concerning metallurgical development is that from beginning to end of their first three thousand years, copper occupied a position similar to that of iron in modern technology. Their relics is of its early civilization is greater than any other country, despite the difficulties in deciphering the hieroglyphics and the later hieratic writing.

pipe7

Many people mistakenly think that the dark brown color of exposed copper pipe is due to corrosion and that the pipe will eventually “rust away.” However, the reverse is true, likewise the color changing process that of the Statue of Liberty – already blogged here. The dark brown color or even the blue-green patina that occurs on copper is copper oxide. Instead of corroding copper, this compound actually protects copper by creating a protective film outside and even inside of copper pipe and tube. This film then protects copper from further corrosion or erosion, leaving the copper pipes still in serviceable condition after more than five thousand years, as the ones recovered by archaeologists from a portion of the water pipe system from the Pyramid of Cheops in Egypt.

pipe9

Copper has been the material of choice for natural gas throughout Europe, Canada and much of the southern United States for decades. In the United Kingdom, copper pipe and tube installations have been used in the vast majority of natural gas installations. However, copper was not always the main material. Once natural gas began to be piped regularly into buildings in the early 1900s, the material of choice, at least in most of the United States, was steel pipe. Other material such as aluminum and corrugated stainless steel pipe and tubing are also used for natural gas purposes. What causes corrosion of the copper pipes is the interior of copper pipe and tube in natural gas installations because of the properties of natural gas itself, and not due to the copper used as a material.

pipe6
Material used in natural gas system per country

In fact, many studies have been done to evaluate the cost of using copper in the plumbing system. Most have found that due to its ease of use and variable joining methods, copper has a distinct advantage over black iron pipe in labor savings. Hence, copper offered the least expensive installation over steel and CSST.
