Sun Devils’ Fans Excited By New Copper Helmet

Two days ago The Sun Devil Football announced a new on-field option available this season. In collaboration with Nike, the new copper-themed uniforms honor Arizona State’s heritage, as well as continue to reimagine Sun Devil Athletics.”, said Ray Anderson, the Vice President for University Athletic.

The Sun Devils’ team colors are maroon and gold and it has been Sun Devil Athletics’ intention to have a football uniform featuring copper as an accent color since it was introduced as part of the university-wide rebrand in 2011. Arizona State has long history as a top copper-producing state, and Arizona State University became the first school in Arizona in 2012 to use its team uniforms to honor its state, and is also the first college football program in the state to incorporate copper into all aspects of the uniform.

The uniform encompasses two colors: copper and anthracite. This is the team’s 10th distinctive helmet design in three seasons and its unique aspects include a copper chrome facemask and decals, as well as a copper chrome stripe down the middle.

The Devils now have four options for their jerseys and five for their pants, and the uniform’s exclusive color and concept features the same design as previous combinations. The pitchfork remains dominant, and the numbers keep their font and include a fade, similar to the black uniforms, from white to copper. The team will wear all-white gloves and cleats with the uniforms.

“We wanted to pay homage to this great state while keeping the team’s look consistent. We are one of the top few teams in the nation with as many looks and combinations as we have, and this plays an important role in building a national fanbase and molding Arizona State University into a household name.”, said Todd Graham, Head Football Coach Todd Graham.

Full-Metal Dress struck by lightning

Dutch designer Anouk Wipprecht presented a futuristic 3D-printed Faraday cage dress with plasma ball pieces attached to the shoulders for a show at Maker Faire Bay Area this year. Wipprecht is known to create futuristic fashion to celebrate the beautiful nexus of fashion design, interaction design, and technology. “3D printing gives the ability to create in much more detail, flexibility, stability, and pace than handcrafting sculptural pieces, and with modeling software like AutoDesk’s Maya and printing, I am able to integrate my electronics directly form-fitted into the designs”, says Wipprecht.

The modeling software AutoDesk’s Maya was crucial to create a structure that would be flexible and wearable, since the dress would mainly require full metal as material. Aluminum plate was the metal choice for this dress, and approximately 600 metal rings link them together. In order to protect Wipprecht’s head from the half million volts of electricity produced by two coils, a prototype helmet from full metal was created. For extra flair, she hacked toy plasma balls into shoulder ornaments. “Normally I work with fashion models,” Wipprecht says. “But this time, nobody else wanted to wear it.”, she added. The show was a success. Her garment safely conducted the coils’ electrical bursts around her body and into the ground while lighting up her shoulders with tendrils of purple plasma.
