Home Sweet-Metal Home

What if almost everything in your apartment was made out of metals? If warm wooden kitchen cabinets, floors, furniture and other furnishings were cold grey wouldn’t you feel like in a prison? It would definitely differ your home from others but calling it a “sweet home”…Although I have to admit that it looks modern and minimalist and some people might love it.

industrial apartment interior design

Peter Kostelov, a designer who created a metal home in Moscow, Russia, uses industrial materials for almost everything. The apartment has steel walls, doors, windows, floors, furniture, even sofa is made mostly out of steel. He divided the wide-open space into a series of individual rooms. Materials that are natural part of a construction process became the core element for style and decor in this project. This concept seems a bit extreme but perfect for industrial lovers.

industrial metal glass condo

If this metal interior is too much for you, you can still apply incorporate in some decorations to make your home luxurious as the one in Shanghai, China – Xintiandi Penthouse. Hong Kong architect Joyce Wang “celebrated metal” in this three-story apartment. She got inspiration in three concrete metals, sheet metal, weathered metal and metal cabling.

The curved staircase up to the roof of the penthouse is created out of bent sheet metal and living room’s walls are lined with corten steel.

Metal cabling was woven between the balustrade and the baseline of the apartment’s central staircase and it created screened-off dining area.

What is very interesting, the bedrooms in the apartment don’t have any windows. Instead, windows line a shared corridor which leads to the bedrooms. Read more here.

Aluminium foil can be also used for protecting us from aliens?!

Aluminium foil is recyclable, shiny, cheap and versatile, so you can use it for lots of things. You maybe know about some tricks but I will tell you about the most interesting and surprising tips and tricks.

Kitchen

Soften brown sugar – sometimes it is not very easy to work with brown sugar. But it can be solved with aluminium foil! Wrap brown sugar into a foil, put it into oven to 300 degrees and after 5 minutes your sugar will be nicely soft.

Campsite cooking utensils – next time you go camping, you don’t need to take all of your kitchen utensils with you. All you must have for creating your own fashionable utensils is aluminium foil. For example you can make a frying pan using a forked stick with aluminium foil stretched over the crook or fold a spoon, fork, bowl, plate. Or use it as socks during the cold weather camping.

House, laundry, beauty

Speed up ironing your clothes – put some foil under ironing board’s cover and iron clothes on top of it. As the foil retains heat it will basically iron both sides at the same time.

Protect your glasses while dying hair – Do you need your glasses while dying your hair? No problem! Line the temples with foil to prevent dye from getting to your glasses.

Extend the life of soap – store your soap on aluminium foil to prevent it from water, so that it lasts longer.

And the best one at the end!

Protect your brain waves from eavesdropping and mind control

If you are scared that somebody (government or super-advanced alien races) could read and control your mind. To fight against telepathic control techniques you can fashion aluminium foil protective helmet. Berkeley engineers tested wave-blocking power of aluminium foil. Y can decide whether you believe it or not 🙂

Home decorated with copper cookware

Copper cookware doesn’t have to be used just for cooking and eating. There are few possibilities how to decorate your home using this copper cookware. It will definitely surprise your guests, make your home trendy, interesting and inspiring.

Copper in a living room

Maybe you think that copper cookware belongs just to the kitchen. Wrong. It can perfectly fits in a living room as well.  Shiny pieces of copper reflect light and add clean and airy feeling to the room. Copper pots are great as planters, round cruets are perfect for cut flowers. Copper plates can be a nice wall arrangement in your living room. They look good on white walls and can be combined to look like a sculpture or geometrically arranged.

A great place for well-used copper pieces is a darker and cozier room adding a historical charm. Copper kettles hanging over the fireplace bring us back to 1800’s. So romantic!

Copper in a dining room or a bedroom

Copper trays can be turned into a wall decoration. For example one horizontal or vertical line of three trays would complete one whole wall. Copper pitches or large copper kettles are lovely for holding fresh flowers. A small copper pitcher would serve as a water carafe on the table beside your bed. Or make some copper pot lamp!

Scandinavian architects don’t use just wood

Tham & Videgård, House Husarö, metal-clad house, swedish architecture, sweden, stockholm, skylights, timber, timber interior, open plan, tectonic rationality, hardwood, sliding doors
A metal-clad house

Wooden cabins and houses are typical for Scandinavian architecture. It perfectly fits into beautiful nature, surrounded by forest, as in a fairy tale. But Stockholm-based architecture firm Tham & Videgård came up with another kind of project. They designed a modern metal-clad House Husarö.

This house was built for client’s growing family and it is located on island in an outer Stockholm. It is placed high on the landscape surrounded by pines, so that it has overlook view of the sea.

The landscape

Starting point for the house was the sea view, the flat and smooth bedrock and light conditions. Tham & Videgård had a modest and relatively low budget, so they approached tectonic rationality to support a specific spatial structure. The pitched roof is clad in folded black metal sheets. Three sides of the building have sliding doors opening out to the views of the landscape.

Inside, the house is divided into two levels. A communal open area with the living room and kitchen on the ground floor and then upper private level with the bedrooms and a playroom. There is a contrast between dark metal facade and a light-colored interior.  A skylight that runs along the ridge of the roof on the upper level underscores the vertical space and enhances the experience of seclusion.

Hang Your Garden Up-Side Down For A Sustainable Artwork

Designed for homes, LivingLight is a multifunction device that serves as luminaire and hanging garden. The concept behind LivingLight is very simple. It doesn’t need to plug into a wall to work – actually the moist soil acts as an “earth battery”. How does it work?  A copper cathodes and zinc anodes are pressed into the soil and connected to each of the 4 OLED LightBlades via 2 spring loaded contacts. These panels, in turn, are highly efficient, since it’s combined with biodegradable cellulose based thin-film battery that stores energy drawn from the electrolytes in the moist soil not used during day time.

lamp1

LivingLight can be hung from the ceiling in clusters to create ‘hanging gardens’ indoors. A thin membrane avoids soil to fall out the bottom opening, securing the upside down vegetable plants to stay put and close to the light source. Another feature is the oil-free Cork Polymer Composite (CPC) pot, which is water impermeable and rot-resistant, whilst degradable and recyclable.

The herbs are watered through an ingenious gravity-based system that provides hydration for your plants via a large top-feeding water reservoir located at the top. Made of recyclable glass the reservoir reduces the maintenance cycle, also saving the water lost through evaporation and drainage in ordinary upright indoor plants.

lamp2

LivingLight was designed by Michael Oechsle and was part of the Electrolux Design Lab 2012, reaching top 80 for global nominees. Its style and functionality call attention, especially when it comes to making the most of limited indoor spaces. It cleans and purifies the air indoors, whilst providing fresh goods grown in a sustainable and natural manner.

What in the picture is made of steel?

People might think that steel is used just for boring technical purposes. Steel components, machinery, steel bridges or buildings. Actually there are some interesting ways and new-found purposes involving steel. Have you ever thought of having “steel trees and flowers” instead of the real ones? You don’t to have water them!

1. The Landscape architecture

Metal_Wall

The landscape architect Margaret Joplin designs the salvage steel “weave” for client’s yard. She collects dozens of steels, stainless steel and creates the amazing object.

2. The architecture

If you want to build a house you can have an inspiration and use steel in a nontraditional way.The architect Jason Gallo and Mary Hardin built the house where visitors are not only welcome by steel gate but also by steel staircase which is not slippery thanks to adding some steel pieces in it. The third “steel thing” in the house is the patio guardrail. Finally the steel back gate says “goodbye” to all visitors.

3.  The home owner

You don’t have to be an architect to make your home more interesting. As a guy from Arizona Tim Hagyard, instead of replacing the old fence in the backyard,  he decided to place the steel sheets in front of the eyesore.

Fence2
Tim Hagyard’s fence

He also used steel inside the house. He made a steel bar counter. It took just cutting steel in his desired shape and support it with building the supporting structure.

Now if you have the ideas how to make your home extra-ordinary you need just steel. Shanghai Metal Corporation with its wide range of products can take care of it.  So don’t hesitate to visit our website here. Living on the Edge of a Floating House

In today’s world people are taking construction business the dew dimensions. The ultimate extremes seem to be in space and underwater but another setting of prefab architecture is on the surface of water.

modern-exterior

The world has many examples of beautiful floating architecture. A floating house has basically two features that are superior compared to their on-the-ground counterparts.

traditional-garage-and-shed

First, floating houses offer safety in areas suffering from floods. An article on BBC tells about an idea of floating houses saving people from UK’s floods. Besides residence, also school buildings have been converted into floatable forms. The concept of floating school buildings has already been applied in Nigeria.

Floating-School-Lagos-Lead-537x296

Second, a floating building also operates as a transportation method. An example has been set in Finland, where sauna rafts have become a sort of a summer trend. Sauna rafts are basically rafts that are equipped with motor engines that move the raft in a moderate speed. Inhabitat has written more about the design of Finnish sauna rafts that also include a patio and hammocks. Formerly Shanghai Metal Corporation wrote an article about container saunas and container swimming pools, but this solution has both of them in one package.

For construction businesses the environment brings challenges as we’ve seen in case of floating architecture. In large major projects it’s the pioneers of the business who define the standards for quality. Shanghai Metal Corporation is one of them, not only because of the width of its business that encompasses prefab building, containers and steel building but also due its success in executing successful projects including some of the largest steel bridges in China.
