Among major steel producers, India is growing the fastest

The month of August saw India making the fastest levels of growth, among the world’s major steel producers. As a country, India produced 8.4 million tonnes of crude steel, an impressive 9.4% growth from the same period last year; the growth is even more impressive when you consider that global increase was just 1.9%.

China, who are by far and away the world’s largest producer of steel saw a steady growth of 3% from the corresponding period last year, 68.6 million tonnes of Steel was produced. In comparison, Japan, the world’s second largest producer of steel had an output of 8.9 MT, which was an increase of 1.5%. Among the other big name producers of Steel, the US produced 6.7 MT, Russia 5.9 MT and South Korea 5.8 MT.

Outside of the top 6 but still within big producers, Turkey made the most significant growth in August with a 12.9% increase, seeing them produce 12.9 Million tonnes.
Currently the third largest steel producer in the world, India’s production has been growing constantly since the beginning of the current year. During the first eight months of the present year, India’s production growth has been the highest at 5.6%.

Considering the small gap between Japan and India and the respective growth rates, it surely can’t too long till India find themselves as the 2nd largest producer of steel in the world.

Rock Climbing on The Containers of Bangalore

After reading the many articles of applications of shipping containers, even I still get amazed on how many there already are and how many there are still to come. It seems that whenever they discover a new way to modify containers’ structure the number of new applications starts to grow rapidly.

For instance, what if you flipped a 20 ft container on its head, what kind of structure would that be? Perhaps a clock tower like this?

Barneveld Noord by NL Architects

Well, an Indian company Mars Adventures has used this simple approach to build a rock climbing facility in Bangalore.

50ft High Artificial Climbing Wall - Mars Climbing Gym at PLAY

At Mars Climbing Gym at Play park Bangalore there are three different climbing facilities including 50 ft high climbing zone, 60 ft wide bouldering arena and a 20 ft high roof climbing setup.

50ft High Artificial Climbing Wall - Mars Climbing Gym at PLAY

The 50 ft container climbing wall lets three people climb at the same time under professional surveillance. The roof climbing setup is a facility where people can climb inside a 20 ft tall shipping container. They open this facility only for professional climbers.

20ft Long Roof Climbing Setup - Mars Climbing Gym at PLAY

What ever is the application, shipping containers won’t change always stay within industry standards. Shanghai Metal Corporation will also keep on shipping these building blocks to our customers worldwide. Our wide selection is worth seeing and maybe you’ll discover new  applications for them. Check our containers here. See also our social media channels for future updates.

Ako spolu súvisí meď a vodka? To bude (ne)zabudnuteľný večer !!

smirnoff

Enjoy your icy cocktails in copper mugs !

smirnoff
Vintage magazine ad featuring Woody Allen and the Moscow Mule, 1966

Copper cups or mugs have been using for drinking since ever. People drank from a copper goblet in ancient Ireland, yogis from India used copper cups, the american colonists drank from copper mugs and in 1940’s Moscow mule came, a cocktail that demanded its own copper mug! Moscow mule became a huge hit within few years and copper mugs started to be sold across the world.

A short story of Moscow mule
recipe
The recipe

In 1940, the owner of Smirnoff (Russian vodka), who was very desperate to get Americans drink the Russian spirit and Hollywood bottler who was desperate to make his ginger beer to be accepted. They mixed it together and Moscow mule became a Cold-war era hit. It was super refreshing so people could chill with their cool drinks for a long time thanks to copper mugs!

Temperature

The most scientific benefit of using copper mugs is temperature. The best drinkers over centuries knew that copper mugs can offer you chilled drinks and an extra-cool sensation as metal quickly takes on the icy temperature of the cocktail. What is more, the rim of the mug becomes chilly almost immediately and offers you a frozen sensation on your lips. So this cold metal is highly effective at insulating the cold temperature of any liquid what is perfect during hot days. The handle of the mug keeps body heat of your hand away from the walls of the mug.

Taste benefits of copper mugs

Some experts say that when cocktail touches the wall of the copper mug, the copper starts to oxidize, boost the aroma and enhance the taste of vodka. Cold copper also increases the amount of bubbles in carbonated ginger beer. Then you can experience a wonderful taste and coolness of your cocktail.

Can You Guess What’s Wrong In This Picture?

The photograph series “For What It’s Worth” by photographer and artist Dillon Marsh is at the very least surreal. By combining photographic precision and computer-generated imagery Marsh produces illogical images as an attempt to provide a graphic visualization of the quantity of copper extracted from the Blue Mine in Springbok, situated 550 km north of Cape Town.

Blue Mine, Springbok (1852 to 1912) 3,535 tonnes of copper extracted

The blue in ‘Blue Mine’ is in reference to the color of rocks in the mine as a result of copper coming into contact with oxygen in the air. Back to the mid-19th century copper was the primarily driving force behind the establishment of relatively remote area of the country such as Springbok, Okiep and Nababeep as formal towns. Following operations that began in 1852, the Blue Mine is recorded as the first commercial mining endeavour in South Africa. South Africa hasn’t been so commercial before, and with the discovery of copper deposits the town became a centre for mining prospectors with movement of people coming to Springbok also attracted by its near and steady supply of drinkable water.

Nababeep South Mine, Nababeep (1882 to 2000) 302,791.65 tonnes of copper extracted

By 2007, however, most of these mines had run their course and production had stopped almost completely. As an attempted to represent the uncertain future for the towns and people of the region, Marsh placed impressive copper spheres in the arid scene of what once served as copper mine. “Whether they are active or long dormant, mines speak of a combination of sacrifice and gain”, describes Marsh. He also adds “their features are crude, unsightly scars on the landscape – unlikely feats of hard labor and specialized engineering, constructed to extract value from the earth but also exacting a price”.

Jubilee Mine, Concordia (1971 to 1973) 6,500 tonnes of copper extracted

Mash’s intention is “to create a kind of visualization of the merits and shortfalls of mining in South Africa, an industry that has shaped the history and economy of the country so radically”.  On the one hand, the development of the mines around Okiep contributed significantly to the demise of copper mining in south-west of England. On the other hand technology and skill were still transferred from these mines to other parts of the world. Unesco classifies the principle value of the copper mine site of Springbok an extension of the Cornwall and West Devon Mining Landscape in the UK, for instance, also sharing a close association with other mining landscape in Australia, Brazil, India and Mexico.

Tweefontein Mine, Concordia (1887 to 1904) 38,747.7 tonnes of copper extracted

The WaterLess Jeans

It is no news that most US garment production has moved offshore to countries such as China, India, Bangladesh to take advantage of low production costs. And along with that decision rise questions of whether or not vendors and factories involved in the manufacturing processes comply with ethical, environment and social standards that create the “true” sustainable products.

levi6

Moving offshore does not imply fewer challenges for the apparel companies, but more intricate responsibilities to ensure that “making profits” can be done without compromising the quality of life of those involved in the process, as well as the future of the environment. In order to address these social challenges, the American Denim giant, Levi Strauss, launched its Water<Less jeans collection in 2011 – designed to reduce the water used in the finishing process by an average of 28 percent and up to 96 percent – and its 100% recycled water standard, a first for the apparel industry.

levi7

If the new Water<Less jeans can really save water? Well, Levi’s announced during the World Water Day on March 22 this year that the line has saved over 770 million liters of water — enough to supply drinking water for 811,000 people for one year — since its launch. The company also planned to make extra 9 million units of the Water<Less jean, saving 71 million liters of water, according to Environmental Leader.

levi1

During the full product cycle of Levi’s single pair of typical 501 jeans more than 3,000 liters of water are used. Almost half of it (49 percent) is used to grow the cotton, while 45 percent is used when customers wash their jeans, typically about 100 times. The remaining 6 percent of the water is used during the manufacturing process of the jean, which required an average of 3 to 10 spins in cavernous washers and dryers to give it its unique appearance.

levi8

Now, the new Water<Less jeans combines the multiple wash cycles into a single wet-cycle process, followed by the ozone processing (dry or raw denim).  When the ozone decomposes, it reverts to free oxygen, not requiring washing the pair of jeans after the dyeing process. That was exactly where Levi’s could exert the most control of the usage on water and energy: the manufacturing process.

levi2

To celebrate the denim brand’s Water<Less jeans over 100 pairs of the jeans were fixed together forming a fluid whirlpool design. The art piece was inspired and designed by British architect Ian McChesney as part of the Regent Street Windows Project in London and used more than 1,000 copper rivets.

levi3

Shanghai Metal Corporation offers a wide range of copper rivets in varying sizes and forms, widely used in the manufacturing of art sculptures such as the Water<Less jeans in London. An Antarctic Prefab Shows the True Potential of Shipping Containers

India’s National Center for Antarctic and Ocean Research is situated in northeast Antarctica. The Bharati Indian Polar Station is built on an 27,000 square feet area out of 134 shipping containers. The research center’s residential quarters shows almost everything that can be built out of shipping containers including an hotel of 24 single and double bedrooms, kitchen, dining room, library, fitness room, offices, a lounge and an operational theater.

indian_research_station-1

There are at least two reasons why the research complex was built by using shipping containers. First, according to the Antarctic Treaty System, all the construction in the Antarctica should not leave any trace to the environment. Shipping containers make it possible to dissassemble and remove the building without causing any environmental impact.

indian_research_station-13

Second, due to shipping containers’ physical properties and their durability, they are an excellent building material for extreme weather conditions. Shipping containers are designed to be shipped even in a rough weather in the world’s seas. Therefore they can even handle the wind gusts of 200 mph and the temperatures of -40 C of the Antarctica.

indian_research_station-8

The shipping container complex was prefabricated in Germany and shipped to Antwerp and Cape Town. In Antarctica the research center was able to be assembled quickly. The facade of the center was designed to forestall the buildups of snow drifts.

indian_research_station-12

Thanks to the German company Bof Architekten, the center can accommodate 47 researchers during summers and 24 during winters. The energy of the center is provided by a Combined Heat and Power Unit (CHP) which is powered by stockpiles of kerosene. There are actually a total of three CHP units on site, so as to ensure that an untimely mechanical failure does not leave the residents in dire straits.

Bullet Trains – What They Won’t Tell You

It’s assumed that investment infrastructure can only be a good thing – but what about the drawbacks? It can put governments in debt to finance the project, and take business away from the existing transport network. So are high speed trains really worth it?

bullettrain2

Hailed by the UK government, it said bullet trains could boost the UK economy by £15bn a year. But research by KPMG suggested the UK’s High Speed 2 bullet train project would make more than 50 places across the UK worse off – such as Aberdeen, Bristol and Cardiff.

In Chengdu, China, the fast transport infrastructure growth has come with social costs. Farmers lost land, displaced residents protested and local governments have ignored land-use laws.

bullettrain3

However high speed rail travel has its perks. Though the cost estimate for California’s bullet train project has more than doubled to nearly $100 billion, high-speed rail officials said Tuesday a new business plan will create an economically successful system, generate more than a million jobs and provide a transportation alternative for the state’s growing population.

India, China and Japan are bidding to build their first bullet trains to kickstart India’s transportation infrastructure, which would bring massive revenues for all the countries involved in terms of finance and job creation. And the bullet trains in China break world records in length and speed, and have revolutionized the previously coach driven travel opportunities.

bulletrtrain4

Ultimately bullet trains benefit the country, but these unanticipated costs should be a concern for any country considering them.

Shanghai Metal Corporation manufactures the copper used in the manufacturing of high speed trains. As an ISO 14001 (International Quality Management System) Company and recipient of the “Star Enterprise Award,” Shanghai Metal Corporation prides itself on exceeding international standards of quality and reliability. Four Our Brazilian Readers: A Indústria Siderúrgica Torna-se Global

The Steel Industry Is Becoming Global

The steel industry is becoming global, said Nippon Steel’s and Sumitomo Metal Industries’ President Kosei Shindo. On an endeavor to seek new opportunities across the globe due to less strong metal demand growth in Japan, Shindo partnered ArcelorMittal in November to acquire a steel plant in the U.S., as well as co-controls Latin America’s largest producjapan4er of the metal used in ships, cars and buildings, Usinas Siderurgicas de Minas Gerais SA, a Brazilian steelmaker. In October 2012, Shindo said that profit in the June quarter fell 24 percent as steel imports from China put pressure on prices.

Brazil is also known for being home to the world’s biggest iron-ore producer, Vale SA. Having mining as primary business, iron ore is a crucial raw material in the production of steel. However, even giant steelmaker Vale is feeling the pressure of the international metal industry, and sees prices rebounding in the coming months as supply growth slows and higher cost mines close at a time of strengthening Chinese demand.

japan3

Iron ore, which entered a bear market in March amid higher supply from Australia and Brazil, rose in July for the second consecutive month on speculation that demand from China, where Vale sends more than half its shipments, is improving.

japan2

India, on the other hand, sees a brighter future in the iron ore market as its steel industry grows and the nation seeks to raise living standards. India may become a net importer of iron ore this year with steelmakers including JSW Steel Ltd. (JSTL), the nation’s third-largest producer, buying as much as 15 million tons from abroad, the Federation of Indian Mineral Industries said, according to Bloomberg.

Globalization of the steel market might be a good thing, but it is necessary to keep an eye on it so no one gets caught by surprise.
