Tree Houses Are Not Just for Kids

Today’s trend is to behave as much eco-friendly as you can. Recycle everything what is recyclable, produce less waste, save energy, build your houses in a sustainable way – live in harmony with nature.

These tree houses supported by metal piles are a great example of low-energy solutions, compost system and low water use taps and showers.

Tree house with metal piles

Bower House Construction uses computer technology for “printing off” the site all of the tree house’s components. This technology reduces construction waste and does not disrupt the surrounding natural eco-system.

Metal piles are screwed into the ground with a hydraulic power pack so that it causes a minimal impact around sensitive zones and it can be completely removed whenever there is a need.

Every house is insulated with sheep’s wool or recycled cellulose providing a comfortable temperature inside the house. There are compost toilets, low water flow taps and showers. Recycled and recyclable materials are used throughout the interior so you feel like surrounded by nature. Maybe these houses are not for everyone but it definitely looks cool and tries to use eco-friendly systems to protect the environment.

Scandinavian architects don’t use just wood

Tham & Videgård, House Husarö, metal-clad house, swedish architecture, sweden, stockholm, skylights, timber, timber interior, open plan, tectonic rationality, hardwood, sliding doors
A metal-clad house

Wooden cabins and houses are typical for Scandinavian architecture. It perfectly fits into beautiful nature, surrounded by forest, as in a fairy tale. But Stockholm-based architecture firm Tham & Videgård came up with another kind of project. They designed a modern metal-clad House Husarö.

This house was built for client’s growing family and it is located on island in an outer Stockholm. It is placed high on the landscape surrounded by pines, so that it has overlook view of the sea.

Starting point for the house was the sea view, the flat and smooth bedrock and light conditions. Tham & Videgård had a modest and relatively low budget, so they approached tectonic rationality to support a specific spatial structure. The pitched roof is clad in folded black metal sheets. Three sides of the building have sliding doors opening out to the views of the landscape.

Inside, the house is divided into two levels. A communal open area with the living room and kitchen on the ground floor and then upper private level with the bedrooms and a playroom. There is a contrast between dark metal facade and a light-colored interior.  A skylight that runs along the ridge of the roof on the upper level underscores the vertical space and enhances the experience of seclusion.

Architectural Triumphs With Galvanized Steel

Corrugated and sheet metals such as galvanized steel have come a long way in the architectural and construction communities from when they were simply a strong and effective material used as roofing. It has come to the point now where they can be the feature of a home or building and used both inside and out.

image

This idea of galvanized steel as a universal building material is shown below where the house features has used it for both a roofing material and as exterior wall cladding. This industrial appearing material, when combined with the natural aesthetic of wood creates a juxtaposition between man and nature, especially given the lush backdrop of rural Australia.

image

From an interior perspective there is an increasing trend to use both corrugated, flat and shaped galvanized steel for both ceilings and walls. The remarkable example below featured in the master bedroom of  a modern home show how the metallic surface of galvanized steel can add a touch of modernity to a design, with the corrugated sheeting offering a texture rarely seen in the interior of a home.

image

The versatility of this material is undeniable, with designers stretching their imagination to previously-thought impossible lengths. As is witnessed in the examples below; the ability to bend, shape, curve and erect this material at extreme pitches can lead to some outstanding design possibilities. The home on the left features a nearly 100% external composition of pre-painted corrugated galvanized steel proving the residents with high bush-fire protection, energy efficiency as well as a remarkable aesthetic!

image

In contrast to these curves seen above the design featured below presents an opposing dynamic of this material. With its sheer pitched sides, long straight lengths and intense angles it is hard not to appreciate the capabilities this material offers to architects and the remarkable results that are left for the eye to enjoy.

What?! Car Flying Over London?

You probably have seen Smart Cars jumping over a bridge every single day in Rotterdam but I bet you haven’t seen the 2015 Jaguar XE flying over central London in the beginning of this month.

In collaboration with the British Royal Air Force Red Arrows Acrobatic Team the car was air-lifted by helicopter in Solihull, where Jaguar’s manufacturers is located and carried along the Thames to Tower Bridge. The car continued its trip on a boat to later on hit the Earls Court, the home of 14 Jaguar debuts since 1935, where it was escorted by two 1960’s Mark II Jaguar Police Cars and welcomed by the 3,000 excited VIP guests.

The show was narrated by English actor, John Hannah and included a star-studded performance lineup including Emeli Sande, The Kaiser Chiefs, Eliza Doolittle, the Royal Ballet, members of the London Philharmonic Orchestra and Max Milner from The Voice.

What so special about the cutting-edge £30,000 XE sports car is the aluminum-intensive materials used to build the car, making it lightweight, stiff and sleek profile. The aluminum-lighter body makes the car more potential-fuel conscious, which in turn comes in line with efficiency regulations. Other carmakers such as Ford have chosen to use nearly all aluminum metal body in its most profitable vehicle, F150. The fact is aluminum when combined with small amounts of other metals to form and alloy it is actually just as strong as steel.

jaguar9

Highly aerodynamic and powerful due to it six cylinder motor, Jaguar XE generates 450 pounds-feet of torque, allowing it to go from zero to 100 km/h in less than 5 seconds and hit an electronically limited maximum speed of 155 mph. The XE car has a luxurious interior and advanced infotainment system including an eight-inch touchscreen and a clear graphical interface.
