Gentlemen Don’t Prefer Blondes

China has been known for its flagrant disregard for copyright laws, and has featured a number of international icons on its soil. The Eiffel Tower, Sphinx of Giza, Sydney Opera House, The US White House, and Rome’s Coliseum have all been featured in China’s landscape. Check out our other article about sculptures that you need to look at twice for more. But not all have been shown with the same reverence.  A 26ft-tall stainless steel Marilyn Monroe statue that took two years to make is left to languish in a Chinese tip.

She’s the quintessential American sex symbol. So it is perhaps very symbolic that the Chinese prepare to overtake the U.S. as the likely next global superpower, they’ve decided they don’t need her anymore.

This giant statue of Marilyn Monroe was left at the dump site of a garbage collecting company in Guigang, in the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region.

The 26ft-tall stainless steel statue, which weighs about nine tons, was made by several Chinese artists for over two years, based on the famous scene from her movie The Seven Year Itch.

The statue was transported to the garbage collecting company early this week for unknown reasons after being showed outside a business centre in the city for only 6 months, local media reported.

The Aftermath Of The BP Oil Spill

After the infamous Gulf of Mexico oil spill one year ago today, BP are still paying for it. Not as widely publicized are the 11 oil rig deaths – instead the public has focused on the environmental impact.

environmentalimpactofoiThrough the end of July, the oil giant paid more than $13 billion to compensate people, businesses and communities affected. The company is disputing some of those claims in court battles that could drag on for years. They allegedly have even more claimants appearing they have yet to address or compensate.

This continues the theme of how BP has dealt with the crisis, where during the spill unlikely items such as golf balls, rubber balls and other garbage items in an effort to stop the flow.

Last Of The Great Train Robbers Dies

ronniebiggs happy

British criminal Ronnie Biggs, best known for his part in the 1963 Great Train Robbery, has died at the age of 84.He was part of the gang that escaped with £2.6m from the Glasgow to London mail train on 8 August 1963. The haul the 15 men secured is the equivalent of £40m in today’s money – and was a record at that time.

Ronnie Biggs was jailed in 1964 for the robbery, but gained notoriety by escaping, having plastic surgery then moving abroad. During his moves to Australia and Brasil, Biggs evaded a number of arrests, extradition and even kidnap attempts that thwarted other members of his crew. For example, Charles Wilson the treasurer of the gang was assassinated by a hit-man on a bicycle in 1990. Biggs later returned to the UK due to ill health, was then arrested and later released on compassionate grounds.

The key to the crime was stopping the train – this was done by hacking into the train signals. Since the crime, railway signaling has been upgraded to avoid such hacks, and relies on high tech equipment.

Like To Get A Souvenir From The USA – Why Not A 335 Metre Steel Bridge?

holidayu2

At the end of your holiday, it’s nice to grab some authentic souvenirs from the country; maybe a hand made silk chi-pao from China, sneak back some yummy pão de mel from Brazil or a hand carved Alebrijes from Mexico.

chipao

However, no country has been as unique as the USA this week in its offerings of local goods for sale.

Reuters has reported that the The Sellwood Bridge in Portland Oregon is on sale for an undisclosed amount until September.  This is a result of an obscure law required by the federal National Historic Preservation Act that states an effort must be made to sell it before demolishing it.

bridge

This is not the only weird law to come from the USA. There’s the admittedly fair Massachusetts law where snoring is prohibited unless all bedroom windows are closed and locked. And then there’s the downright rude (although mildly amusing) Tennessee law, where it is illegal for a woman to drive a car unless there is a man either running or walking in front of it waving a red flag to warn approaching motorists and pedestrians. And finally, according to the very optimistic Washington code of conduct, it is compulsory for a motorist with criminal intentions to stop at the city limits and telephone the Chief of Police while he enters the town.

law2

This sale comes despite the fact it would cost upward of $1 million to move, and it would be cheaper to build a brand new one – as they found in 2008 in the attempted sale of the Multnomah County Bridge.

usflag

If Oregon needs any help on those new bridges, get in touch with Shanghai Metal Corporation. We manufacture steel bridges at great success – like with our latest project The Wuzhou Avenue Pedestrian Bridge which is an important infrastructure construction project. We are one of the largest producers of value added metal manufacturing that can work to suit any specification. To find out more, please visit our websiteLinkedInTwitter, and Facebook.

Turn on the Lights!

In 2004, a woman was driving a car in Pennsylvania. She was also followed by a police car that asked her to pull over. The woman was driving in a dark lit area, so for her own safety, she decided to drive a bit further and pull over in a well lit area. She kindly explained the officer why she did not pull over immediately, but she still got arrested and had to spend a night in jail.

pullOver

There seems to be an ethical dilemma between the woman’s rationale and the law. On one hand it is just common sense to ensure one’s safety, but on the other hand the law enforcement officers have their duties as well.

The law of Pennsylvania is really simple, stating one needs to pull over immediately when asked. If one refuses, the officers might also think the driver is, say, smuggling drugs or hiding guns. Therefore, regardless of their safety, people have to pull over, even when common sense tells otherwise.

ledstreet

Nevertheless, there is a way to solve this dilemma without changing the law more complex simply by installing more street lights. Besides, LED lights are energy savers, highly efficient, environmentally friendly and have a long life span.

So the next question: where to get these LED Street Lights. Of course from Shanghai Metal Corporation. We sell LED lights that are five times more efficient than incandescent bulbs and that last for 50, 000 hours. That’s nearly six years.
