The Metal Aesthetic: China’s Smartphone Fad

The last 2 weeks sent shockwaves through the Chinese smartphone and tablet device markets, with the long-anticipated announcements of new devices by Xiaomi and Meizu. Tech giants in their own right, both companies have come out with guns-blazing with new and improved devices.

But once we step-back from the hype, there’s a striking similarity between them (and indeed, many other devices currently on the market) – ALL METAL DEVICES ARE IN!

Not only does this move signal a paradigm shift from the cheaper reinforced plastic versions of their predecessors, but perhaps we’re finally seeing a responsiveness from tech companies to the demand for a ‘premium-feeling’ that only metal can deliver.

Smartphones from HTC and Apple have sported metal exteriors for several years, so it’s a welcome relief to have a metal-clad warrior bursting onto (and from!) the Chinese domestic stage.

Forget Home Furnishings, IKEA Enters The E-Bike Market

IKEA has certainly surprised us with many clever home-furnishing solutions. Most importantly, IKEA, with its roots in the super “green” country of Sweden, could not leave its homecountry’s highly socially conscious citizens disappointed. When it comes to act environmetally friendly, IKEA comes right up in the top list worldwide as leader of clean technology. In fact, IKEA has big goals for 2020 that includes a plan to obtain 100% of the energy it consumes in its stores and buildings from clean energy and to grow more wood than it uses.

Plastic bags were far gone six years ago, CFLs and LEDs were introduced as replacement for high-energy consuming incandescent light bulbs back in 2010, affordable home solar panels were recently made available in the UK, a number of electric car stations were installed at stores across the world and now IKEA has entered the electric bike market.

Yes, e-bike FOLKVÄNLIG can be found in two IKEA’s retail stores located in Vienna, Austria. Still in its inception phase, the e-bike is expected to become viral and shortly reach out to many different stores. The electric bike’s design has already received various awards at the Taipei Cycle Show, Eurobike and the IF Design Award.

FOLKVÄNLIG in Swedish means ‘user- friendly’, which is probably what IKEA is trying to address here with its sleek e-bike that could take you anywhere within a distance of 60 to 70km, aided by a powerful electric motor of 250Watt that could get you a total pedal-assisted range up to 45mi/72km per charge.

The e-bike also features an easy rechargeable system to its removable in-frame lithium-ion battery pack that takes about five hours to recharge, as well as a Shimano transmission that provides six different driving modes.

Should it prove successful, IKEA’s FOLKVÄNLIG e-bike must also come in a foldable variant, which gives the market even more room for growth.

Play A Coke Lyric With Your Coke Bottle

It’s been 35 years since the Coca-Cola Company has been present in China. The company’s re-entry in China in 1979 followed the country’s economic opening after the Communist Party’s takeover. During the three decades of communism there were no foreign brands on Chinese soil. What existed of the Coke’s bottlers in 1949 were nationalized, and turned into the beverage of elites, which one could found at a few remaining exclusive hotels, if lucky enough.

Today, China is the company’s third-largest market, after the US and Mexico, respectively, to be its biggest any day soon. To create the company’s newest the Coke Lyric bottle campaign, Coca-Cola partnered with Isobar, a digital marketing agency. The new campaign features a QR code on the Coke bottle which can be scanned in WeChat in order to activate a short clip of the same lyrics on the bottle. Once scanned, the song can also be shared with friends on WeChat and other social platforms.

Coca-Cola has been taking advantage of social media and digital technology to help consumers connect with the brand, which ultimately increase sales. Isobar is calling these new digital objects ‘Musicons’, for musical emoticons. “The new ‘Musicons’ are to songs what tweets are to blogs. Sometimes a soundbite says it better,” said Tim Doherty, chief creative officer of Isobar China.

Embedding lyrics on Coke products is the new addition this year, following last year’s Nickname Coke campaign in China, where consumers had to decide which nickname to give to which person – “whatever nickname bottle you received, signaled how people identify you”, added Doherty.

Typically, a smartphone is used as a QR code scanner, displaying the code and converting it to some useful form (external Web site or social media page), where brands can exhibit a mix of content that showcases product use, perks or contests.

International Marketing

Why is international marketing important for companies? Many companies want to increase to their consumer outreach and not be limited by geography. As technology improves, international communication becomes easier to conduct. For many corporations, strong communication skills are important in creating and maintaining any type of long term business relationship.

1

Many businesses understand that people in different countries have varying needs. How can companies bridge cultural gaps to reach people from all over the world? The answer is simple: international marketing. International marketers know that in order for businesses to expand, the companies must understand differences in cultures, customs, values, beliefs, languages, and needs. For example, one product may sell really well in one nation but fail to sell in another. Companies that better understand the different markets and target audiences end up saving more.

As a result, conducting market research is important and can be very cost-effective for international corporations. Most international marketers gain knowledge of the specific marketing environment and make marketing decisions based on the size of the market, competitors, potential barriers, etc. Here at Shanghai Metal Corporation, we value the hard work of all of our marketers. Without our local and international marketers, we would have been unable to tap into markets from all over the world.

Artistic Copper Refurbishment Reinvigorates Maine’s State House Dome

10036381_H13320675-600x450Workers at the Maine’s State House Dome are currently part way through a $1.3 million process of having its old, leaking, green, oxidized Copper dome replaced with a shiny brand new one. As work continues to replace the 7,000 square feet worth of Copper atop the State House which is more than 100 years old, lawmakers on the Legislative Council have accepted a plan to sell much of the metal to artists and craftsmen as a way to preserve and maintain the metal’s iconic and cultural value. Originally plans were to sell the old Copper roof as scrap metal to help fund the refurbishment, approximately $12,000 was expected to be raised upon recycling depending on the ebb and flow of Copper spot market prices.

dome4aHowever, a more thoughtful proposal of re-purposing the oxidized Copper as raw materials for local artists to turn in to sculptures, jewelry and other art pieces was made and the Legislative Council have given their nod of approval. “Any time you can incorporate Maine artists into a historically significant project, and potentially employ Maine artists, that’s a good thing,” said Julie Richard, the Maine Arts Commission’s executive director.

This new repurposing proposal has five core elements that will help determine where the old copper will end up.

dome1aFirstly, some of it will be melted down and recast into commemorative collectables and keepsakes such as coins and medallions which will be sold or distributed to the public. Small workable sheets will be sold to local jewelers and artisans to be remade into various jewelries, Current market value for oxidized green copper is about $400 for a 1 meter-squared sheet but it will likely be sold for cheaper than that. A portion of the material would be given or sold well below market value to Maine sculptors or educational institutions for use in creating 3-D works that may be sold or used for educational purposes. Some is hoped to turned into new public art commission for the State Capitol Complex in Maine. Finally, pieces that are not intact enough to be repurposed into anything will be recycled as scrap and the proceeds used to help fund future projects of the Maine Arts Commission.

The restoration project is expected to be finished by October this year.
