The Cliff House Defines the New Extreme of Prefab Architecture

An Australian Company Modscape has come up with a design of a five story building clinging to the side of a cliff in southwest Victoria Australia. The Cliff House resembles the house of the Marvel comics character, the Ironman Tony Stark.

tony starkThe real life Ironman house is equipped with a carport, a living room, kitchen, an open-air spa, BBQ room, three bedrooms with one having an en suit bathroom and a larger bathroom. The only entrance of the cliff house is at the top floor from where an elevator or stairs take the residents to every prefabricated level.

At the lowest floor, the home opens up to another outdoor space, which seems to float above the water. Patio furniture, an outdoor kitchen and a jacuzzi tub extend the luxurious feeling of being above the ocean. The minimized amount of furniture emphasizes the connection to the ocean and the horizon.

The Cliff House’s design is inspired by how barnacles cling to the hull of a ship. Like barnacles, the house is anchored to a cliff by steel pins. The house works as a natural extension to the cliff bringing an absolute connection with the beautiful ocean.

Perhaps some people would hesitate about coastal erosion and how it affects the house’s steel fasteners. Fortunately, the former president of the Royal Institute of British Architects Maxwell Hutchinson has said in BBC’s interview that there is no reason why the design should not be structurally sound. Cantilever beams drilled into the rock could support the building just as crampons support a climber. Hutchinson also mentions that the building costs might become high because the people in the industry tend to dislike everything unusual.(source)

Thor’s Hammer: The Science

Thor’s hammer isn’t real, unless you believe recent Swedish news that Thor’s hammer has been found in Stockholm. No, only in the hearts and minds of comic book and movie fans does it exist. But, assuming it did, would anyone be able to lift it?

thors hammer1

Legend says only the worthy can lift it, and depending on which source you read, it’s made from a dying star. If that is the case, then it would have to weigh as much as a herd of 300-billion elephants according to Neil deGrasse Tyson. If you’re wondering, the average weight of a male African bush elephant is a bit more than 12,000 pounds, so about 4.6 trillion metric tons. Watch a video by Vsauce3 which nicely explains the concept:

If we were to follow the legend that Thor’s hammer was made from metal from Asgard, it would only weighed 42.3 pounds. That is far less than 4.6 trillion metric tons.

Most likely if it was made from existing metals it would be made of carbon steel.  Die steel refers to a variety of carbon and alloy steels that are particularly well-suited to be made into tools. Their suitability comes from their distinctive hardness, resistance to abrasion, their ability to hold a cutting edge, and/or their resistance to deformation at elevated temperatures (red-hardness).

Shanghai Metal manufactures the carbon steel in hammers. Die Steel is mainly used for manufacture of cold-work dies with high abrasive resistance and small shock load. SMC is delighted to provide wide range of alloy steel to the customers; we also accept customizations according to your requirements. Become Bullet Proof …Using Water

In most movies, the superhero escapes certain death by simply jumping into water. Or if he’s Aqua Man: go back home. But would that actually save him from someone shooting at him? The answer is yes and no. Myth Busters found the answers.

bulletwater1

It depends on the bullet, and how fast it goes. Paradoxically, the slower the bullet, the deeper it can go. The reason for this is because of the force at which it hits the water. If it hits hard enough, the bullet will shatter and become harmless. But if it is going slow enough, it will continue through the water at speeds fast enough to penetrate human flesh.

Refraction

Supersonic bullets, up to .50-caliber, disintegrate in less than three feet of water, while pistol rounds need up to eight feet to become non lethal. Shotguns slugs require even deeper water. While these are the technical measurements, in most actual situations the bullet would enter the water at an angle, reducing the amount of water necessary to make it non-lethal. This is shown in the refraction picture here.

Copper

Shanghai Metal manufactures the Copper Clad Steel used to make bullets. Copper clad means both side of carbon steel is covered with T2 copper. This is a novel alloy material which can be used in a variety of applications.  To find out more, please visit our websiteLinkedInTwitter, Facebook and Instagram.
