IMPORTANCE OF METALS IN YOUR EVERYDAY LIFE

Whether you like it or not, metals play a BIG PART in our everyday life. We interact with them differently as each of them has it’s own properties : some are used as supporting elements for buildings, smartphones, transportation. Some are used for decoration by artists and sculptor or some are used to display wealth, like gold for example.

That being said, we have tendency to overlook the importance of metal because we confront them directly or indirectly everywhere, therefore perceiving their presence as self-evident. Oh and also, some of them are imperceptible to human eyes so this may contribute to our lack of understanding metal in our life.

So let’s explore these hidden but common metals we interact with everyday shall we ?

COPPER for example, is a type of cheap metal used by companies to conduct electricity. The average American will use more than 1,000 pounds of copper in their lifetime ! You can find them in your ALARM CLOCKS, DENIM JEAN BUTTON, PORTABLE AUDIO DEVICES or your DOORKNOB and even in your GRANOLA BARS ! Copper is essential not only for everyday objects but also for our own body.

Next on the list is STEEL. Like Copper metal, you can find it almost everywhere too. Taken for granted, they are in buildings, machinery, cars, galleries and statues. So can you imagine our world without these elements ? It would be hard to conceive another element as useful as these metals. When the word Steel is pronounced it also means RECYCLING. Each year, the US alone recycles no less than 80 million tons of steel, which works out to about 70% of the world’s total steel recycling

Another metal important for our future is ALUMINIUM. Thanks to its strength, low weight and good potential for recycling Aluminium is as useful and flexible as it’s other metal brothers. It’s properties also allow to build high buildings, transportation and also for packaging, the most common use that this metal is known for.

Not to mention other types of metal, these three principles are maybe the most commonly known by public although people easily tend to forget their usefulness.

Apart from the referred objects we just mention, the crazy thing about  metal is that it has a really wide range of function and can be used by any types of profession. Physicians and architects take advantage of these metals by constructing impressive buildings industry while some artists see these elements as pure physical support in which they transfer their imagination and creativity.

See how great metals are ? As representatives of the metal industry, Shanghai Metal Corporation is one of the leading businesses in the global field. As a major producer of copper, aluminium, steel and other metal products and service, we essentially are committed to the universal use that metal can offer by delivering overseas and promoting environmental sustainability.

Wonderful Chain Art

Metals are everywhere around us and sometimes you don’t even notice that an object next to you is made out of steel, copper or aluminum. For example a simple metal chain doesn’t have to serve just for securing your bike against the railing. Why am I mentioning a chain? Well let’s sit comfortably and have a look.

Urban art has many interesting variations. Here, artists used their imagination and metalworking skills to create something really extra-ordinary. By using CHAINS!

via weburbanist

I am a bit curious who would wear shoes with chain higheels, it seems almost impossible to walk with that.

Everyday urban landscapes may seem shady that’s why artists accentuate the beauty of these places to make the environment nicer to people.

via weburbanist

Fashion designers also got inspired by chains and implemented it into their urban fashion style. Many of you probably don’t approve it but at least they stepped out of mainstream and created something unusual.

via weburbanist

Not only fashion but also furniture can be created with chains. These kind of chairs, sofas or tables will lighten your house and bring unique style.

This urban style is not for everyone but if you like it you could visit our website to see what metal products we offer. Shanghai Metal Corporation offers good quality and a quick service. Boom in Billboard Designing

There is an article about architecture that turned a billboards along the road into homes for homeless people in our blog. (read here). An interesting concept that can solve the problem of homelessness in the world. This time Zaha Hadid, well-known architect, rethought roadside advertising with a new billboard design.

Outdoor advertising company JCDeaux asked Zaha Hadid to create a “curved and flowing” billboard for south side of West Cromwell Road that is the main route from Heathrow airport in London. The billboard is housed within twisting bands of thick sheet metal. It is supposed to reduce vehicle headlights and glare from the sunlight. The idea is make steel structure and facade panels integrate into one shell.

A strip of lightning across the curved back of the structure illuminates the pavement. They chose metals as a material for building this structure because it can be pre-fabricated off site in large sections. The screen of this billboard will be available for safety messages, travel updates, also it will show work of local artists, architects and designers. (via Dezeen)

The End of Metal Keys?

We don’t really pay attention to small things around us that are naturally just here, existing with us quietly and serving us. One of these are KEYS. Nowadays, they are most commonly manufactured metal objects in the whole world that enable us to open our physical properties – cars, buildings, safes and many others.

As a lot of things, origin of keys also dates back to ancient Babylon and Egypt, when first locks appeared. Egyptians used a wooden toothbrush-shaped key for lifting small pins in wooden locks and unlock the blot. The big disadvantage was that keys and locks were made out of wood and they were quite heavy and bulky.

In ancient Rome, engineers and inventors managed to improve a wooden Egyptian design of locks and keys. By using iron and bronze were able to produce much stronger and smaller locks and keys that could be carried on person.

Old Rusty Keys

Modern “flat keys” were firstly introduced to the public by Linus Yale in mid 1800’s. By using tumbler lock and more sophisticated way of regulating the pins, these flat keys become instant success across entire world. However nowadays electronic locking become more and more popular.

Hotel industry was one of the first that introduced key cards (Atlanta, US, 1979). It was basically a simple card with few holes in it that helped to reduce the electricity waste, hotel staff knew when the guest was still in a hotel room and what is the most important, they didn’t have to change the lock when the key was lost.

Electronic keys are becoming trendy, many brands of cars have key-less ignitions, Hilton hotel chain in US is planning to enable their guests to open their rooms with their smartphones. Electronic keys might control your front door via Bluetooth, open the door automatically when you are nearby, send virtual keys to your relatives and friends or control what time certain people have the access.

Many people may argue that their homes are too precious to entrust technology, key-less systems and smartphones. It could stop working when there is a fire or power cut. What to do then? Although this idea is brilliant and with current innovations might work properly and give us new options, metal keys are still cheaper and safer way of protecting and locking our homes.

Shanghai Metal Corporation manufactures and provides various types of metals, galvanized steel or copper that can be used in many applications. For more information visit our website or send us inquiry. English speaking staff will guide you further. Home Sweet-Metal Home

What if almost everything in your apartment was made out of metals? If warm wooden kitchen cabinets, floors, furniture and other furnishings were cold grey wouldn’t you feel like in a prison? It would definitely differ your home from others but calling it a “sweet home”…Although I have to admit that it looks modern and minimalist and some people might love it.

industrial apartment interior design

Peter Kostelov, a designer who created a metal home in Moscow, Russia, uses industrial materials for almost everything. The apartment has steel walls, doors, windows, floors, furniture, even sofa is made mostly out of steel. He divided the wide-open space into a series of individual rooms. Materials that are natural part of a construction process became the core element for style and decor in this project. This concept seems a bit extreme but perfect for industrial lovers.

industrial metal glass condo

If this metal interior is too much for you, you can still apply incorporate in some decorations to make your home luxurious as the one in Shanghai, China – Xintiandi Penthouse. Hong Kong architect Joyce Wang “celebrated metal” in this three-story apartment. She got inspiration in three concrete metals, sheet metal, weathered metal and metal cabling.

The curved staircase up to the roof of the penthouse is created out of bent sheet metal and living room’s walls are lined with corten steel.

Xintiandi Penthouse by Joyce Wang

Metal cabling was woven between the balustrade and the baseline of the apartment’s central staircase and it created screened-off dining area.

What is very interesting, the bedrooms in the apartment don’t have any windows. Instead, windows line a shared corridor which leads to the bedrooms. Read more here.

Hover over copper and aluminium!

As I am a bit shorter, I have always wanted to fly or at least hover over places, so that I can see what is going on. How great would it be to just hover during the concerts or when you want to reach something but it is too high for you. I admit, these are my problems, but hovering over the places looks more real than ever before and it can make our lives more exciting. And now it doesn’t seem as hoax.

Jill and Greg Henderson

A couple from California, United States, Jill and Greg Henderson say that they have developed a working hover-board and they want to bring it to common households.

Jill Henderson, real hoverboard, magnetic hoverboard, Hendo Hoverboard, Hoverboard, World's first hoverboard, Hover board, Hendo Hover Board, Hendersons Hoveboard, Hendo board, Greg Henderson,

Greg used Magnetic Field Architecture (MFA), an electronic principle that magnetic energy is conserved,  as Maglev trains uses for humming along and he designed the hoverboard, The Hendo. Although the hoverboard floats only one inch off the ground but couple claims that this is just the first step in improving transportation technology. The Hendo uses four disc-shaped motors to lift it off the ground carrying 140 kg (about two people) for around 15 minutes.

Now they are looking for $250,000 in funding to refine the working technology and start the production. The price of Hendo will be $10,000.

The only small problem of this Hendo hoverboard is that it can hover just over metals like copper or aluminium so you would be able to ride it just in special arena.

Shanghai Metal Corporation will make it possible as we sell aluminium, copper and other products. For more information visit our website or send us inquiry. English speaking staff will guide you further. Download the application by scanning QR code or follow us on Social Media.
