Do Bombs Really Tick?

“Actually, baggage handlers don’t worry about ticking ’cause modern bombs don’t tick. But when a suitcase vibrates, then they gotta call the police. Nine times out of ten: it’s an electric razor. But… every once in a while… it’s a dildo.”

— Airport Security Officer, Fight Club

Movies are there to entertain, so its understandable they don’t waste time on specifics and science. However, some movies invest so much time in developing a scifi premise or a character’s vast expertise in bomb making that it’s slightly insulting when they present us with something so amateur. (See our past article ‘are locks as easy to pick as in the movies?’ for more on movie realism.)

obviousbomb2This is older than television; if you look at animated cartoons from the early to mid 20th Century, one of the more common mayhem-related props is a bomb—black, bowling-ball-sized, with burning fuse stuck in the top, and possibly the word BOMB on it in big happy white letters.

On TV they always have blinking lights (red is a popular color), audible beepers and/or a timer counting down on them. Some bombs have all three. Older depictions have a loudly ticking alarm clock taped to a bundle of dynamite.

obvious bombIn reality, modern bombs that aren’t sanctioned by government are generally made not to be identified so wont tick, beep or otherwise indicate its true form. Military and construction bombs however are labeled to the extreme. Construction is due to health and safety, and military because as the majority are designed to explode on impact, labeling won’t affect their efficacy.

So to answer the question, no, bombs do not tick.

How To Live Forever

Doctors have begun human trials of suspended animation to buy more time for critically injured patients. This is reminiscent of Hollywood movies where characters wake up in steel pods during space travel having been frozen for years at a time. For more on movie realism, see our article on what Hollywood finally got right about science.

propods2

However, this is not quite the concept Dr Tisherman of the USA has meant it for. Emergency preservation and resuscitation (EPR) uses an innovative rapid-cooling procedure to suspend life, similar to how surgeons induce hypothermia during some surgeries.

heartbeat1

Dr Tisherman’s EPR process, developed with the help of $800,000 from the Department of Defense, is mostly about resurrection. The idea at this stage is to use equipment like the catheters and pumps that can be found in any trauma centre to suspend the life of critically injured people in order to buy more time for surgeons to try to save them.

heart

EPR works by lowering the patient’s body temperature and replacing their blood with a cold saline solution. If the human trials are successful, the aim is to take the technique out into the field. For example, a paramedic might be able to use EPR to put a dangerously ill patient into a suspended state until they can be rushed to a specialist hospital. Such a system could also be used on the battlefield to evacuate injured soldiers.

Alien Machinery Found In Russia

300 million year old machinery has been found in Russia – experts say the steel gear is not the result of natural forces, and may be extraterrestrial.

alienmetal

According to Yulia Zamanskaya, when a resident of Vladivostok was lighting the fire during a cold winter evening, he found a rail-shaped metal detail which was pressed in one of the pieces of coal that the man used to heat his home.

Mesmerized by his discovery, the responsible citizen decided to seek help from the scientists of Primorye region. After the metal object was studied by the leading experts, the man was shocked to learn about the assumed age of his discovery. The metal detail was supposedly 300 million years old, and yet the scientists suggest that it was not created by nature but was rather manufactured by someone. The question of who might have made an aluminum gear in the dawn of time remains unanswered.

4 Real-Life Hidden Treasures You Could Still Find

Have you ever dreamt as a child of finding buried treasure? Maybe you chased the end of a rainbow to find the pot of gold. Well, this article was written for the child inside you as we account for the hidden treasure that is still waiting to be discovered.

Over the years metal detecting enthusiasts have uncovered a number of treasures, including; underground stolen money (1946), pirate treasure (1952), a lost gold mine (1966) and an alleged J.F.K assassination bullet (1974). But many still await discovery.

El Dorado

eldorado

Located just a couple hours north of Colombia’s capitol city of Bogotá, Lake Guatavita is believed to be the site of the El Dorado legend, with actual gold being recovered from the lake since the Spanish arrival in 1536. And, there are many more hidden treasures to be found, as the children’s movie proved.

Butch Cassidy’s Stash

butchcassidy

He was such an outlaw that he even formed an outlaw group, called the Wild Bunch who buried $20,000 somewhere in Irish Canyon in Colorado USA.

Inca Treasure

incas

There is between $12-60 million worth of treasure stolen from the Spanish guard who attempted to hide it during a revolt. It is theorized to be in the formerly known Cocos Island, near present day Costa Rica.

Nazi gold in Austria

nazigold

In the last few months of World War II, Nazis sunk containers and various other objects into Lake Toplitz for still not entirely known reasons. Many divers have died trying to retrieve it, but what keeps interest so high in the lake is that many believe the Nazis sunk millions worth of gold, diamonds and other treasures, possibly even including art wonders.

So what are you waiting for? Shanghai metal produces the stainless steel used in metal detectors. Sliding Doors Moment – Is Fate Real?

Did you ever see the 1998 Gwenyth Paltrow movie where her character gets fired from her job and we get to watch her parallel lives unfold, based on whether she made it into the tube before the sliding doors closed? Watch here for a reminder:

In an instant, life can change and we can lose everything: our health, our jobs, or the people we love. But, think about how much we can gain in an instant too. There are moments like this one in the movie that you do not control, do not choose and cannot decide. However, there other situations where you clearly make a decision, that you know it is affecting, no matter what, the main course of your life.

The New Age Cure For Insomnia

“This is how it is with insomnia. Everything is so far away, a copy of a copy of a copy. The insomnia distance of everything, you can’t touch anything and nothing can touch you”

― Chuck Palahniuk, Fight Club

fightclubart1

Insomnia can be very detrimental to your health – it can cause stress, apathy, impaired memory, weight gain and a decrease in your immune system power. A study by the National Sleep Foundation (NSF) showed that as high as 70% of us suffer from sleep deprivation, and most of these go undiagnosed and untreated.

sleepmonitor

Among other conventional methods such as changes to your diet or exercise, one way to get control of your sleeping habits is a sleep monitor. These can vary in their features, but the best of which automatically detects running, biking or walking as well as sleep. For example, Basis’ Body IQ™ 2014 Carbon Steel Edition features all of this in addition to personalized sleep reports for each phase of the sleep cycle.

basissleepanalysis

The Daily Mail reports that sleep monitors can actually disrupt your sleep because it gives the user an extra thing to worry about. Alternatively the BBC reports that carefully monitored sleep and exercise patterns can give athletes a competitive edge.

goodsleep

The sleep monitor industry is worth up to $3bn (£1.8bn) also according to the BBC. So, if you would like to see improved mood, weight, and lifestyle why not consider this new age option? I bet Chuck/ Tyler wished he had.

Shanghai Metal Corporation manufactures value added carbon steel products like this sleep monitors. The Law of Finders Keepers

When amateur ‘land fishers’ (or metal detector users) make an archaeological discovery, who receives the proceeds? Should academics get automatic claim upon the find, the owner of the land, or should we follow the childish yet simple rule of finders keepers?

traesurechest2

Economists have long claimed that property rights have incentivized innovation and discovery, so to motivate future finds the finders keepers rule should be maintained. However this infringes on the land owners and the much older monarchist rules where from example in ancient Rome, half went to the finder, half to Hadrian. So what have other countries decided?

treasurewallpaper

In the UK, to encourage artifacts to be enjoyed by the public, the Treasure Act of 1996 stipulates if something of worth is discovered, museums or the government will bid or offer the fair market price for them. For example $5.3 million was paid by the successful bid from a British Museum, and split between Herbert and the owner of the Staffordshire field where the Anglo Saxon copper was found.

underwatertreasure

However in the US, various statues and precedents make the rules murky. For example, US treasure seekers in 1993 discovered the wreckage of a steamer containing millions of dollars worth of gold coins, but had to fight a court battle with both the government and the original insurers of the accident. They eventually won back most of the value, but these decisions are made by case by case and are very much subject to opinion,  and muddled by the American culture personified by the ‘no trespasser’ signs.

gavel-reverse

So which system should prevail? Ultimately, 90% of finds are by amateurs, so without incentivizing them, future discoveries will never see the light of day and be enjoyed for its academic value. But unfortunately as there is a lot of money involved it will inherently be plagued with conflict.

So like the recent Roman copper coin find in the UK, the value of copper can be quite pricey. At Shanghai Metal, we manufacture competitively priced value added copper products. As an ISO 14001 (International Quality Management System) Company and recipient of the “Star Enterprise Award,” Shanghai Metal Corporation prides itself on exceeding international standards of quality and reliability. Privacy Unveiled …By Lampposts

Lamposts and laptop webcams have reportedly been used to listen in private conversations in the USA, UK and China.

lampostvforvendetta

In the UK, the so-called Sigard system has been tested in London, Manchester, Birmingham, Glasgow and Coventry. The microphones, connected to CCTV cameras, can recognise aggressive “trigger” words and sounds, then automatically direct cameras to zoom in on the speakers. Manufacturers denied the system is used to record conversations. It analyses sound patterns to pick out angry or distressed voices. But the makers would not pledge that in the future Sigard would not be used to record whole sections of speech.

The USA will start collecting data through Web-connected sensors installed on lamp poles this summer in an effort to ‘better understand the urban environment and ultimately make Chicago a safer, more pleasant place to live’ according to Bloomburg Business Week.

hacker

A 2009 report from the University of Toronto described a surveillance program called Ghostnet that the Chinese government allegedly used to spy on prominent Tibetans, including the Dalai Lama. The authors reported that “web cameras are being silently triggered, and audio inputs surreptitiously activated,” though it’s not clear whether the Ghostnet software is capable of disabling camera warning lights.

In response Kyle McDonald and Brian House say they hope to raise questions about the nature of public and private spaces in an era when anything can be broadcast by inventing an eavesdropping lamp that live tweets private conversations.

lampostspies

What questions does this raise about privacy? Should humble items like PC’s and lampposts be exploited to curb on civil rights? Infowars reports that the manufacturers of these lampposts have since taken down any reference on their websites to avoid a backlash. Shanghai Metal Corporation maintains its integrity in its field and manufactures the carbon steel used in lampposts. What The Movies Got Wrong About Swords

In fantasy novels and action movies, we like to see weapons at work but we don’t particularly care how they were created. Some swords have even more elaborate origin stories than the characters who wield them. All the stranger then, that no one writing our favorite books and movies ever bothered to google how these weapons are really made.

Myth 1: Making a Blade Only Takes One Movie Scene

swordforging

All you have to do is heat the carbon steel, pound it into shape, then heat it again like they do in movies. Those montages never take more than a couple minutes; surely you could churn out countless swords a day? In fact, a single longsword can take anywhere from 40 to 80 hours of forge time.

Myth 2: Magic Metals Make Super-Powered Swords

game-of-thrones-ned-stark sword

We’ve already covered this one in our article about the reality of shows like Game of Throne’s Valyrian Steel Blades. Sadly, here in the real world, we just have steel. There are no hidden mines spitting up extra special sword metal, no meteorites raining magic space iron down on our heads.

Myth 3: Katanas Are the Greatest Sword Ever Invented

pulpfictionakatana

If you’ve ever watched a Tarantino then you are well aware of this myth. Draped in honour, these samurai swords are folded multiple times to get them to unparelled sharpness levels. However, katanas are typically made of pig iron, and are only folded to remove the impurities of the sub-par metal.

killbillkatanaSo if you were thinking of whipping up a sword in your spare time, you may need to schedule a few more hours in. If you’re looking for the materials, Shanghai Metal Corporation manufactures the carbon steel used for most sword replicas. As an ISO 14001 (International Quality Management System) Company and recipient of the “Star Enterprise Award,” Shanghai Metal Corporation prides itself on exceeding international standards of quality and reliability. How To Do A Better Job Than Jack

Spoiler alert – Jack didn’t do a great job maintaining the Overlook. The hotel’s overworked boiler was an ongoing metaphor for Jack’s own simmering insanity. And as his temper did, so did the boiler explode.

boiler

Proper maintenance of that boiler might have avoided the fate that eventually hit Jack.  Avoid unqualified maintenance workers as was shown here and hire a professional. But, you can perform some small forms of maintenance on your own. Depending on the type of system you own – forced air, hot water or steam — you can conduct various maintenance tests and clean areas that require routine maintenance. Well-maintained boilers function more efficiently and ensure that your family will be safe from potential hazards:

  1. Examine your boiler’s vent connection pipe and chimney, because these parts deteriorate over time. Determine that no holes or cracks are present and that all areas that should be sealed are intact.
  2. Inspect your heat exchanger for proper function. Heat exchangers typically leak water, so if you notice a water leak, that’s likely the problem.
  3. Readjust the controls on your boiler so they provide the optimum levels of efficiency and heat. The more efficient a system, the more money your family will save on heating costs.

stainless steel bar- boiler heat exchanger

Shanghai Metal Corporation manufactures stainless steel boiler heat exchangers. We are one of the leading manufacturers and suppliers of metal products. Shanghai Metal Corporation produces about 8000-10000 Metric tons of stainless steel every month. As a holder of large stores of metal products, we are able to provide low prices, high quality, excellent support, and quick delivery times.
