Riace Warriors: No EXPO!

Until few weeks ago it seemed that the 2015 Milan Expo would have hosted the two famous bronze sculptures known as Riace Warriors. Unfortunately, the tourists coming from all over the world to visit this year’s edition of the Universal Exposition will not have the chance to admire these incredible pieces of art dubbed Bronzi di Riace. Some maintained that the two metal statues would have represented an added value for the exhibition, perfectly fitting with the healthy nutrition theme inspiring the 2015 Expo. Indeed the bronzes are the symbol of bodily vigor and muscle elasticity.

However, because of logistical issues the Riace Warriors will stay at the Magna Grecia National Museum of Reggio Calabria, in the southern of Italy. Indeed, after having gone through a delicate process of restoration between 2009 and 2011, the sculptures are today exhibited to the public inside a micro-climate room, and displayed on top of an anti-seismic  platform made of Carrara marbled.

You may wonder why here at Shanghai Metal Corporation we care so much about the Bronzi di Riace. First, because of their incredible story. These two metal statues were found in the Ionian Sea in 1972, 300 meters away from the coast of Riace, a tiny village close to Reggio Calabria. According to the analysis, the statues were probability made in Athens around 450 BC and then shipped to Rome. But the boat that was carrying them sank. The sculptures were then found interred under 8 meters of sand. Second, the statues are made of bronze and today after restoration their greatest splendor is again available to visitors. So if you plan to go to Italy for the 2015 Expo do not forget to book a flight for Reggio Calabria to see these amazing pieces of metal art.

Renzo Piano’s Whitney Museum

Today Shanghai Metal Corporation brings you to the Big Apple where Italian architect Renzo Piano has recently announced the completion of the project that will host the new Whitney Museum of American Art. The building is “an asymmetric steel and concrete assembly in Manhattan’s Meatpacking District” (dezeen.com). As reported by the Telegraph: in the latest years, the area has undergone considerable transformation: it “has been cleaned up, if not wholly sanitized.” (telegraph.co.uk). The new building designed by Piano ,in collaboration with New York practice Copper Robertson, fits perfectly this renewal plan. Indeed, the district, “formerly a deserted industrial area, is now the place of fashion and art, of technological start-ups and of the trendiest meeting places.” (living.corriere.it)

Talking about the structure of the museum located along the Hudson River, the Whitney features indoor and outdoor galleries – 50,000+ square feet of indoor galleries + 13,000 square feet of outdoor exhibition space on a series of rooftops (from nycedc.com). Moreover, “most impressive is the fifth floor’s showstopping 18,000-square-foot space, the largest column-free museum gallery in New York City”(from architecturaldigest.com). Finally, from the glass-doors and the numerous terraces, visitors can enjoy an amazing view of New York and the river.

As Piano said “a successful building always tells a story. You have to be able to produce rich narrative. An architect needs a good story to start with…and a good pen to write it” (form living.corriere.it) And at Shanghai Metal Corporation we really like this story!

Aluminum Exhibition Encourages Imagination in Engineering

In the years following its invention in the 1850s, aluminum was used in imitation of older, more established materials, like bronze, silver, and gold. Pittsburgh’s special relationship with the material dates to the founding of Alcoa (the Aluminum Company of America) in the city in 1888. In the 20th century, designers embraced the material for its own unique properties, exploiting its lightness, resistance to corrosion, and reflective surfaces. Between the two world wars, the material came to represent the Modernist ideal, epitomizing the streamlined, industrial world.

Aluminum production increased dramatically to support the war effort during the World War II. After the war, aluminum companies struggled to maintain production. To that end, the Aluminum Company of America (Alcoa) developed an “Imagineering” program, encouraging imagination in engineering.

As an effort to create incentive designers to continue to find new and inventive applications of aluminum, the Carnegie Museum of Art exhibit offers advertisements from 1946 related to the “Imagineering” program. The design collection at is especially strong in objects made in aluminum, an industrial material deeply associated with Pittsburgh.
