Why were copper-masked mummies buried in shallow graves in the wastes of Siberia, just shy of the Arctic Circle? Why were they laid to rest alongside 11th-century bronze bowls from Persia, about 3,700 miles (6,000 kilometers) to the southwest? And why were their skulls smashed in?
Russian archaeologists are trying to discover the origins of a group of 800-year-old bodies found just 29 km from the Arctic Circle, which were accidentally mummified by copper when they were buried. The mummies were discovered at Zeleniy Yar in Siberia, in 34 shallow graves, and 11 of the bodies found in the medieval burial place had either smashed skeletons or missing and shattered skulls. They may have been damaged by their peers deliberately to prevent spells emanating from them. There is only one female, a child, who is buried with her face masked by copper plates, and three male infant mummies, who wear copper masks and were bound in four or five copper hoops that each measure several centimetres wide.
Maybe the embalmers valued copper as highly as we do here – Shanghai Metal Corporation is the proud manufacturer of value added copper products. So many myths make their rounds in our conversations; you can jump at the last second to survive an elevator crash, or that no one can lick their elbow. But here at SMC, we are here to confirm the ultimate urban myth – coke does indeed clean pennies.
But how is this possible you may ask – how doesn’t the coke also corrode our digestive system? Carbonated (fizzy) soft drinks contain carbonic acid that is often used to remove rust and other types of corrosion from metals. Corrosion happens when the metal reacts with oxygen and the effect is different on different metals, such as rust on iron or tarnish on copper. But, the acid in fizzy drinks is weaker than the gastric acid already in your stomach which is used to break down food.
Take a look here to see it in action:
Other uses of coke are vast:
In many states (in the USA) the highway patrol carries two gallons of coke in the truck to remove blood from the highway after a car accident.
Removing grease from clothes
Basting a ham
To remove rust from car parts
To clean a toilet
So there you have it – mystery solved! Shanghai Metal Corporation manufactures the copper used for making pennies – typically the less corroded kind.
