L’évolution des réfrigérateurs

L’ancêtre du réfrigérateur moderne est sans nul doute le modèle Monitor Top de General Electric commercialisé en 1927. Pesant plus de 275 livres d’acier, cette bête en acier propulsa l’industrie de la refrigeration domestique vers ses premiers sommets. Ce modèle fut rapidement accompagné d’une extension faite de stainless steel qui permettait la congélation d’aliment. L’acier stainless permettait entre-autre d’éviter la rouille et l’usure du fuselage.

Durant les années 1950, l’industrie du réfrigérateur visa davantage la classe moyenne. Le modèle Northstar fut emblématique de son époque. Pesant plus de 350 livres, ce réfrigérateur était composé d’acier stainless. Il fut également le réfrigérateur qui amorça la tendance decorative des réfrigérateur. Les femmes au foyer pouvaient maintenant choisir la couleur de leur mobilier de cuisine. La tendance vers le recouvrement d’acier inoxidable débuta à cette époque.

Après quelques décennies, arriva les nouveaux modèles des années 1980s. Nouvelle époque, nouveau design. Capitalisant moins sur l’image de fiabilité et de fierté nationale que représentait l’acier, les nouveaux modèles des années 1980 misaient d’avantage sur l’efficacité énergétique et utilitaire. On peut voir ici un des modèles fer de lance de l’époque : un réfrigérateur de marque Fisher and Paykel.

Aujourd’hui les réfrigérateur ne sont plus uniquement des outils de cuisines, mais églament des éléments de decoration. Les modèles aux portes françaises, avec machines à glace ou même fonctionnant à l’aide d’internet ne saissent de repousser les limites de l’imagination.  De leurs humbles et frustes débuts, les réfrigérateurs ont su travers les époques poussés  par l’esprit innovateurs de leurs concepteurs.

When car turns into a fridge

During the hot summer days people use those kinds of fridges that you put in a car and it keeps your beers and food cold. Have you ever imagined that there is also a fridge literally made out of the front end of the real car?

Italian home appliance manufacturer Smeg turned the cute Fiat’s 500 front into a fridge. These two very famous Italian brands and icons of Italian design joined together to create  something new out of existing product.

Inside the fridge there is an instrument panel, cluster, the same you would find in a car Fiat 500. The capacity of fridge is 100 liters and can chill or freeze. There are three color options : red, green and white – the colors of national Italian flag.

I am not sure that this is the fridge that everybody wants to buy and own but it can be funny to watch guests in your house trying to find the ice in the kitchen.

The World’s Biggest Mobile Fridge Sailed in Paris

The Eiffel Tower, Louvre, Notre Dame, Versailles, Moulin Rouge, those are the places to visit in Paris. In 2009, the city of love also became famous of a creative marketing campaign.

The Korean electronics company LG set up a creative marketing campaign for their ecological fridge. The company, one of South Korea’s largest chaebols, turned a 70 meter container ship into the world’s biggest fridge that sailed up the Seine from Le Havre to Paris between June 22 and June 25. The vessel transported cooking ingredients that the famous 3-star Michelin chef Alain Passard cooked for visiting journalists.

LG’s ecological fridge uses a patented “Linear Compressor” technology that is to lower energy consumption up to 20 percent compared to other conventional fridges. The new fridge technology has also received an A+ rating from the EU.

Refrigerated containers, or reefer containers, are mainly used for shipping temperature sensitive products even with extremely long distances. Reefer container technology enabled for instance the shipping of Camel Milk from the United Arab Emirates to Europe. Please, read the whole story here.

As businesses are getting more aware of the benefits of refrigerated containers, new uses for them are emerging. Reefer containers are basically tools that combine mobility and cold chain. For example, Atlanta’s Botanical Garden used a refrigerated container to set up a mobile bio-secure research laboratory for their research  on frogs in 2011. Reefer containers are also convenient in, say, open-air events where organizers need to keep their heavy loads of Red Bulls and Coca-Colas chilled all the time.
