Team Building Exercises – A New Spin

Have you had the chance to go to a team building exercise? They vary worldwide. In Japan one worker described one team building exercise named ‘naked relationships’:

“After showering and washing your hair in a group facility, you sit in the bath (which is a natural hot spring) together and talk and bond. The idea is that when you are naked, everyone is equal and you will feel free to discuss things and joke about things that you wouldn’t in the office setting.”

Another worker recalls  their team building experience,

“We had to go around the room and tell each other what we didn’t like about each other. We might have also had to add what we did like about each other but I honestly only remember the criticisms and the people bursting into tears. We went from simply not being able to work together to actively disliking each other in about 30 minutes. Then we ate a boxed lunch and ended the day by filling out personality tests”

Well next time you could try something a little different – and become an army tank driver. There’s an organization in England that does team building events for corporations where you pretend you’re in the army and drive tanks.

Did you know that the reason why tanks are called “tanks” is because while the British were developing the first tank, they were hiding it underneath tarps and referred to it as a “tank” to maybe confuse the enemy about what this new contraption really was. They were hoping they’d think it was a water tank or some other innocuous device.

By face hardening steel, armies found that the harder face of steel would cause milder steel and iron projectiles to shatter when they struck it. This meant that the steel couldn’t be penetrated easily by a single round.  Even multiple rounds might still shatter, depending on their size. All because of the way the face hardened steel behaved.
