Retro style of telling time

Do you love retro style and you are planning to buy new watch now? Then you might be interested in a new design Retro Timer released by American clothing brand Fossil and London fashion studio Eley Kishimoto.

Retro Timer has been influenced by design in 1950’s, it has a large hand to mark the hours, but the traditional hand marking minutes has been replaced by a rotating red aluminium disc.

They wanted to use the red disc somehow and then just put a point on that disc to have it as the minutes. This way they accidentally developed a new way of telling time. (via Dezeen )

A clock without clock hands – what time is it?

Knowing the current time is quite important for people. We want to be on time (well at least some of us), we check it every minute whether it is time to go home from work, we wish we had more time with our beloved ones. Although many of us have replaced the regular watches or clocks at home by mobile phones, but this brand new design of clock will impress you. The next challenge will be guessing what the time is.

The clock designed by Rachel Suming, graduated from University of Art and Design Lausanne, is made of engraved three pieces of 1.5-millimetre aluminium plates that overlap every three hours to reveal the time. These aluminium plates are powder coated in matte white. She created different shapes for the whole day and these aluminium motorized parts rotate independently. There are three ways of telling time during the day. The outer shape of the clock tells us which part of a day it by morphing from a circle into a hexagon over six-hour period time.

The engraved lines form the number 3, 6, 9 and 12 every three hours. The arrow pattern in engraving points is in the same direction where the traditional clock’s hour marker would be. She thinks that the hands of the clock can be stressful for people and she would like to design a clock which shows just hours. This was the starting point for creating Eclipse, a project’s name. Rachel Suming said : “I hope my clock will help people let go for a while and lighten our present perception of time”.

Do Bombs Really Tick?

Movies are there to entertain, so its understandable they don’t waste time on specifics and science. However, some movies invest so much time in developing a scifi premise or a character’s vast expertise in bomb making that it’s slightly insulting when they present us with something so amateur. (See our past article ‘are locks as easy to pick as in the movies?’ for more on movie realism.)

This is older than television; if you look at animated cartoons from the early to mid 20th Century, one of the more common mayhem-related props is a bomb—black, bowling-ball-sized, with burning fuse stuck in the top, and possibly the word BOMB on it in big happy white letters.

On TV they always have blinking lights (red is a popular color), audible beepers and/or a timer counting down on them. Some bombs have all three. Older depictions have a loudly ticking alarm clock taped to a bundle of dynamite.

In reality, modern bombs that aren’t sanctioned by government are generally made not to be identified so wont tick, beep or otherwise indicate its true form. Military and construction bombs however are labeled to the extreme. Construction is due to health and safety, and military because as the majority are designed to explode on impact, labeling won’t affect their efficacy.

So to answer the question, no, bombs do not tick.

A new clockwork heart pacemaker does away with batteries according to Yahoo News. Swiss engineers, famous for making the world’s finest watches, are turning their hands to cardiology with a prototype battery-less pacemaker based on a self-winding wristwatch. Current pacemakers need for battery power is a limiting factor, since replacing them requires a surgical intervention.

“This is a feasibility study. We have shown that it is possible to pace the heart using the power of its own motion,” Zurbuchen, the head engineer said.

Automatic watches work because they have an eccentric weight that pivots when the wearer’s arm moves. This rotation progressively winds a spring that then turns the watch mechanism. In the new Swiss pacemaker, the mechanical spring unwinds to spin an electrical micro-generator.

The research is still at an early stage and there is, as yet, no schedule for human testing. However, this could prove a major innovation in both healthcare and the watch-making industries.

The “water of life” as translated in Gaelic is the perfect definition to what gentlemen all throughout the world drink. Although whisky or whiskey has become the choice of many aficionados, the problem is that most drink it with ice- since it would be sacrileges to shake it to chill it of course. Although the intention is viable, the drawback is serious; watered down whiskey or whisky which insults itself. The “water of life” should no intent of purpose be turned into water itself, but since most people like to drink it chilled, what other option are there? Iced-metal is the answer to this prayer.

To Oak or Not To Aak? That Is The Question!

Wine, vino, vin, or 葡萄酒- no matter how you say it, is recognized worldwide. But its popularity could not have been reached if not for stainless steel. Wine making itself is a tricky and tedious business, with attention to detail and constant monitoring, the introduction of stainless steel into this industry changed everything forever.

In the world of wine, and wine-making there are constant arguments about any little thing; from which corkscrew to use, to old world and new world wines, wooden or steel and the newest one-cap or cork? Today we will focus on the argument of wooden or steel-while stainless steel has improved the process of wine-making everywhere in the world through its introduction into its machinery, it has also been the topic of many heated arguments.

The arguments are in the style of: taste, time and value it gives or takes away from the wine. Let’s use French Chardonnay as our example to this argument. While many like the traditional oak or “buttery” taste of a traditional Chardonnay, many prefer the citrus; more fruit forward taste a non-oak fermented Chardonnay will have. Many say the use of stainless steel vats lets the grape ferment in a very different manner; some believe the lack of presence of oak lets the natural sweetness or citrus come through, giving it a self identity and not adhering to any from the oak.

Many “old world” vineyards still adhere to tradition, but you cannot argue that since the introduction of stainless steel, “new world” vineyards have been able to expand its product line as well as produce more affordable wines. Stainless steel vats lowered their overhead dramatically, although at first the cost is great, the steel vats outlive their oak barrel or oak vat compatriots.

Steel oak has paved a new era for wine all around the world. Not only has it changed the era of Chardonnay’s but as well as red wine, and sparkling wines.
