Shipping Container Architecture – One of Those Accidental Innovations

There is one factor that is common to shipping container houses, Coca-Cola, Play-Doh and corn flakes. Just like a falling apple whose hit made sir Isaac Newton discover his laws of physics, all of these products were also discovered unintentionally. For instance Coca-Cola was meant to be a medical remedy for headaches, but as we all know, the pharmacist John Pemberton‘s chemical experiment in 1886 became another sort of refreshment.

In today’s world’s constant pressure towards innovation,  the most valuable discoveries can simply be found by accident, experiment or even emotion. For example potato chips were invented in 1853 by an angry chef George Crum who became so sick of  customers complaining about his fried potatoes that he prepared them fried slices instead. Surprisingly the customers did like the new dish and the rest is history.

Play-Doh was discovered in 1955 by Joseph and Noah McVicker who attempted to make an ingredient for cleaning wallpapers. A year later a toy manufacturer Rainbow Crafts started marketing the product and since then, the toy with a secret recipe has sold over 700 million US dollars.

Corn Flakes were invented by accident when the Kellog brothers John and Will accidentally left a pot of boiled wheat grain on the stove for several days. The mixture turned moldy but the product that emerged was dry and thick. Next they tried it with corn so corn flakes were created.

Shipping containers were invented and patented by Malcolm McLean, a trucker who was tired of the slow process of loading cargo in wooden crates. His invention really helped industries to save shipping costs. In 1956, loose cargo cost $5.86 per ton to load, but the use of ISO shipping containers lowered the costs down to 0.16 cents.

In 1987 Philip C. Clark saw shipping containers from another perspective and filed them a US patent for converting them into habitable building. He has once said that “Shipping containers can be so much more; they could be houses, schools, entire cities!”. Later on, many companies have implemented this idea.

Can You Do A 360 Degree Loop On A Swing Set?

The urban legend we all remember from our childhood was that It is possible to do a chain-straight 360° loop on a swingset. Did you ever try it? Well Myth Busters set out to find out if it was true. For chained swings, apparently this is a myth.

mythbusters

Under one’s own power it is impossible to do a chain-straight 360° loop on a school yard swing set. With help of other pushers, it is possible, although highly difficult, to do a full circle without the chain being straight. A person would need a rocket strapped to himself to do it. A dummy was set up in such a manner; the rocket was able to propel it in a chain-straight 360° loop, but the setup would be too dangerous with a real person.

However, it is possible to do a 360° loop on a rigid-arm swingset. A seventh generation circus performer confirmed the myth by doing a 360° loop while Tory, Kari and Grant observed. The others were not able to do the loop, as it consumes a lot of energy. So your childhood fantasies were not disproved, and just maybe, the youthful dream could be fulfilled…

Shanghai Metal manufactures value added galvanized steel used in swingsets. We are the international manufacturer and supplier for three galvanized lines of hot dip galvanized steel. The monthly output for each line is approximately 5000 ton. Our large monthly production and advanced processing facilities promise the quick delivery and superior quality of products for our customers. LEGO Lands On British Shores

Have you ever stepped on a LEGO piece? How about 4.8 million of them?

In 1997 a shipping container filled with 4.8 million Lego pieces fell from a cargo ship off the coast of Cornwall in southern England. The BBC reports that pieces are still floating to shore 17 years later. The Tokio Express captain described the wave that hit the ship as a “once in a 100-year phenomenon.” The ship tilted 60 degrees one way, then 40 degrees back, sending more than 60 containers into the water.

Tracey Williams has started a Facebook page to track the Lego pieces that continue to wash ashore to this day. Take a look at some of what has washed up:

lego2Chris Koch, the president of the World Shipping Council, says there is an “array” of legislation in force regarding the construction of containers – each one costing £2,927 ($5,000, 3,671 euros) – and how they are stacked aboard container ships.

“The predominant cause of loss is very, very bad weather, when the forces of nature overcome the forces of lashing the containers to the ship. The industry does what it can, but it can’t control Mother Nature.”

Where Did ‘Loom Bands’ Come From?

The power loom, which partially automated textile weaving, was one of the most important inventions of the Industrial Revolution.  Most of the important weaving inventions during this time were not patented. Because imitation did not destroy profits, it simply didn’t pay to use patents. (This wasn’t limited to the loom: Only 15 percent of the U.S. inventions shown at the 1851 World’s Fair in London were patented.)

This admission has led to innovation of the loom to the consumer market. Playgrounds and living rooms are under invasion from colored bands. Children are spending hours twisting them into bracelets. Parents are getting tired of picking them up from behind sofas and off the floor. Some schools have even banned them after pupils used them as weapons.

The Rainbow Loom, a plastic device for turning small rubber bands into jewellery, has sold more than three million units worldwide. The sheer scale of the craze can be seen in the stats for Amazon UK. All 30 of the best-selling toys are either looms or loom-related. The products top the sales list for every age group except the under-twos.loom2

The Duchess of Cambridge wore a loom band bracelet on her recent trip to New Zealand, and David Beckham, One Direction’s Harry Styles and the Duchess of Cornwall have done the same.loom4

Cheong Choon Ng, the 45-year-old inventer, was born in Malaysia but has lived in the US for the last 23 years. He is married to Fen, and has two daughters Teresa, 16, and Michelle, 13. Seeing the potential Cheong made a plastic version, patented it and then spent his £5,800 of family savings to get it made in China. The Rainbow Loom kits went on sale for £10 in summer 2011 and the rest, as they say, is history.

Shanghai Metal manufactures the Stainless Steel Precision Strip used in looms. To find out more, please visit our websiteLinkedInTwitter, and Facebook. Or you could try our new mobile app by scanning our QR code.
