Dubai with Its Twisted Skyscraper Is Planning To Build the World’s Tallest Twin Towers

Dubai, a place with iconic skyscrapers, high-rise buildings, the world’s tallest building (Burj Khalifa with 829,8m) and the twisted skyscraper,is now planning to build the world’s tallest twin towers.

Twisted skyscraper

Architects Skidmore Owings & Merrill (SMO) were the ones who designed twisted Cayan Tower and now it is completed. This skyscraper that is 307 meters high. The twisted profile of this tower reduces wind forces as it disperses it around the exterior. Metal facade was designed to screen interior from a desert sunlight. Cayan Tower now became a significant part of Dubai’s 21st century skyline.

Developers Emaar Properties and Dubai Holding want to build a huge leisure and residential area including towers that will be as its centerpiece. Dubai Creek Home, as they named it, will be a new landmark and tourist area with  39, 000 homes, 22 hotels, retail outlets, tourist attractions and of course twin towers.

There are no concrete architects named for this project and the construction date of twin towers still hasn’t been confirmed. Also twin towers’ height remains as a developers’ secret.

Miss Liberty Chopped Up and Found All Over NYC

It may sound absurd but it’s true. Pieces of the Miss Liberty’s body can be found scattered across two boroughs in NYC. But don’t worry! This is only a replica of the Statue of Liberty as the original one still stands untouched on its very Liberty Island since given as a gift by Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi in 1886.

Creator of ‘We the people’ collection, Vietnamese artist Danh Vo spent the last four years recreating the statue in 250 full-scale individual pieces. “I wanted to do something that everyone had a relationship to, and make it a bit unfamiliar. It’s kind of like creating a Frankenstein that gets its own life”, says Vo.

Using the same fabrication techniques and copper material as the original Lady Liberty, the artwork was “conceived in Germany, fabricated in Shanghai, supported by his French gallery, collections and art institutions worldwide, and dispersed to exhibition venues in more than 15 countries”, explains Vo.

“When Bartholdi created the Statue of Liberty…he created an image and a political agenda,” adds Vo. “What I’m doing with it is a shift of scale and shift of meaning.” He added that his work “is more a project that should evoke discussion in the place that it is exhibited. And we’ll have to wait to see what that will be”.

In collaboration with Public Art Fund 53 colossal fragments of Liberty can be found at Brooklyn Bridge Park and City Hall Park until December 5th 2014. ‘We the people’ collection presents nearly a fifth of Vo’s project and comprises body parts of the Miss Liberty such as the statue’s right sleeve, the one that covers her right bearing arm, the ear of the statue placed beneath the cornerstone of the historic building, and links of the chain found at the feet.

“When you’re looking at a massive piece of copper that you have a very intimate relationship [with] right in front of you,” says Andira Hickey, the Public Art Fund’s associate curator, “and see it completely transformed into a full figure that you can recognize in the distance, it’s such an evocative metaphor for the multitude of perspectives you can have of an icon like that.”

If you are not a private collector this is a great opportunity to come very close to Miss Liberty and experience the magnificence of the statue. And if you look carefully enough you might be able to recognize the dismantled pieces of the Statue of Liberty as you know.

Social Media Campaign Shames Airline Passengers

A new social media campaign on Instagram and Facebook allows passengers to shame others for their inconsiderate traveller etiquette. It’s common courtesy not to put your feet up on the back of someone’s seat, take your shirt off or clip your fingernails while on an aircraft. But it seems these annoying travelers haven’t yet got the memo. Take a look to discover the worst offenders.

Copper Was a Symbol of Eternal Life for the Egyptians; Nowadays it is a Symbol of Eternal Freedom When Cooper is on a Chopper!

image

Copper was once believed by the Egyptians to be a symbol of eternal life; however copper on the hands of a biker builder such as Paul Yaffe becomes a symbol of eternal freedom. This freedom is only earned by those who ride without a destination; and only when you are on the saddle of your chopper, cruiser or bobber, opening the throttle towards the sunset will understand what FREEDOM is all about!

image

Americans and all motorbike enthusiasts around the globe love the open road because it symbolizes the freedoms that it provides. This sense of exploration has helped build America’s nation; and the vast interstate network of asphalt and pavement for decades has facilitated people’s travel to places near and far for commerce or just a ride to nowhere!

The “Copper Chopper” built by Arizona native Paul Yaffe to mark Arizona’s 100th anniversary was unveiled by Governor Jan Brewer on Saturday, Oct. 23rd 2010 during the  Arizona State Fair. The unveiling of the Arizona Centennial Chopper was part of a Safety Day that included a bike show and a Bret Michael’s Concert at the fairgrounds in Phoenix, AZ. The Arizona Centennial Chopper traveled the open road for 17 months, promoting events and projects celebrating Arizona’s 100th anniversary.

Mining Industry Update: Peak Gold to Be Reached

News just out of Toronto is the reporting that peak Gold will be reached either at the end of this year or in 2015. The CEO of the world’s largest gold mining company, Goldcorp; Chuck Jeannes has said that production will start to decline given that the easiest to access of global gold deposits dry up and no new technological break-through have been reached to allow miners to tap into supplies.gold 2

So what does this mean for the industry, traders and the general public? Well first and foremost the price of gold is going to remain strong as supply decreases and traders opt to buy more gold given the positive predictions on price. For the general public who already hold gold either in Jewelry, commodity or in bar form their net worth will be on the rise. As has already been seen in many developed economies, the proliferation of gold buyers, pawnshops and the like has markedly increased to reflect these rising prices. This trend is shown on the graph below.

gold 3

As for those who don’t currently have any gold of their own it would appear that it will become more and more difficult to enter this market as prices continue to rise. We may begin to see an increase in prospecting, especially at less viable locations given that it will now become more economic for companies to try to tap into previously disregarded reserves.

Move Along Airplanes – Submarines Overtake Travel

submarine1

China has moved a step closer to creating a supersonic submarine that could travel from Shanghai to San Francisco in less than two hours. Not much is known about the team’s progress because it is a military project, but the SCMP reports that Germany, Iran and the US are working on similar projects.

worldflags

The team from the Harbin Institute of Technology was inspired by a supersonic torpedo invented by the Soviet Union during the Cold War.

Water yields more friction on an object than air, which should mean that a submerged boat or weapon could never travel at the same speed as an airplane.

But the Soviet military figured out how to put a missile inside an air bubble to cheat this rule of science — a process known as ‘supercavitation’. They created the Shakval, a torpedo that could reach speeds of over 379 km/h, much faster than any other torpedo available.

submarinegraph

The Chinese team, led by engineering professor Li Fengchen, sought to apply the same process to a submarine by overcoming two central problems. The submarine would need to be launched at speeds of up to 100 km/h in order to generate the air bubble. It would also require very advanced steering because the ship’s rudder would be inside the bubble, not touching the water. The answer was found in the form of a manmade liquid membrane that would cover the submarine’s surface. The result is a vessel that could reach the speed of sound, crossing the entire Pacific Ocean in approximately 100 minutes. Once supercavitation is harnessed, it could be incorporated into any underwater activity.

The Antarctican Training Programme – Could You Make It?

If you’ve got $4,500 spare and a taste for life threatening danger, then Antarctica is for you.

The coldest station is Halley with a winter temperature of around −50°C and a summer temperature of −10°C. The freezer in your kitchen is at about -22 degrees Celsius (-7.6 degrees Fahrenheit) despite the fact the outside temperature is more like 20 degrees Celsius (68 degrees Fahrenheit). The freezer follows a cycle where it compresses the coolant, releases the heat to the back coils and pumps the colder coolant inside the freezer. So technically, during your midnight snack you endured similar temperatures than in the south pole….sort of.

Freezer

Surprisingly, at its peak Antarctican tourism saw just under 50,000 visitors per year, mostly passing cruise ships but some sleep on the ice.  So how do people prepare for the trip?

Rachel Andrews, 41, is using the cold storage vehicle to help her acclimatise to temperatures as low as -58F (-50C) in the Antarctic. The adventurer is using the back of Moby Nicks’ frozen fish van, a local company in her home town of Plymouth, to experience the sub-zero temperatures.

rachelandrews

Some winter sportman have come up with innovative means of preparing for the race in addition to training on sand to simulate snow. The videos below from Spanish and French national television stations show athletes training in a giant industrial freezer.

The Bean Boasts the Beauty of Stainless Steel

A picture of Anish Kapoor with his creation, the Cloud Gate
Anish Kapoor with his creation, the Cloud Gate

Cloud Gate is a Stainless Steel sculpture designed by Anish Kapoor, an Indian-born British artist. To locals, Cloud Gate is better known as “The Bean.” For obvious reasons, the nickname, “The bean,” was coined from its bean like shape.

Legumes and the Bean

This massive artwork rests as the centerpiece of AT&T Plaza at the Millennium Park. It took over two years to create “The Bean.” Did you know that Cloud Gate was constructed from 2004 to 2006? Additionally, it took about 168 Stainless Steel plates to be welded together in order to create this masterpiece.

An example of Stainless Steel Plates

Amid the crowds of people and the fingerprints left by tourists and locals alike, the highly polished exterior actually has no visible seams. As a matter of fact, Cloud Gate had to be polished more than a thousand times in order to remove all the visible seams. Today, you will see workers polish “The Bean” to maintain its reflective property.

Several workers polish the bean

Now, let’s get down to details. Cloud Gate measures 10 meters by 20 meters by 13 meters. Its arch is about  3.7 meters. Additionally, this grand sculpture weighs more than 110 tons! To put things into perspective, an average car only weighs about 1 to 1.5 tons. Can you imagine lifting more than 100 cars stacked together?

cars-piled-up

According to Anish Kapoor, liquid mercury served as his inspiration for the design. Liquid mercury is a reflective liquid, which is why the surface of Cloud Gate reflects and distorts the beautiful skyline of Chicago. The underside of Cloud Gate contains a concave chamber. This concave chambers warps and multiplies the reflections of the objects or the people under it. Furthermore, this chamber has become extremely popular with locals and tourists. It has been a favorite for photo-taking due to its reflective characteristic.

Did you know that this unique sculpture was close to not being made? There were many technological concerns regarding construction and assembly. In addition, there were many technical and financial concerns in terms of maintenance. Many experts believed there was no way to make the design come to life. However, there were a few who believed it could happen and made it happen.  Luckily for us, Cloud Gate was formally dedicated on May 15, 2006. This Stainless Steel Sculpture has become an attraction and a go-to spot local and international people alike. If you get a chance to visit Illinois, make sure to stop by Chicago’s Millennium Park.
