China, Second Biggest Producer of Copper In The World (List of Top 10 producers)

Most copper is mined/extracted as copper sulfides from large open pit mines in porphyry copper deposits that contain between 0.4 to 1.0% of copper. This is the case in some mines in Chile and the United states .

According to the British Geological Survey The amount of copper in use is increasing and the quantity available is barely sufficient to allow all countries to reach developed world levels of usage.
It was reported by the US Geological Survey (USGS), the global production of metal increased by 400 million tons between 2013 and 2014 reaching 18.700 million tons, although the demand for copper decreased compared to the previous year.

Chile’s copper production has been increasing for the last decade although technical and regulatory issues could slow down the trend. between 2013 and 2014 the production increased from 5.780 to 5,800 tons.

China is the largest refined copper producer, but it lacks copper mineral deposits. It has to import unprocessed copper ores and copper scrap.
China increased its copper production in 2014, putting out 1,620 million tons of the metal compared to 1,600 million tons in 2013. Reuters reports that notes that the country’s production increased during the second half of the year, due to the re-lauching of a 100,000-tonne-a-year smelter Liaoning province (North east of China) after 5 years of inactivity.

3. Peru (Mine production: 1,300,000 tons)

between 2012 and 2013 peru’s prodcution didn’t change much. In 2013 the country produced 1.300.000 tons. But it is expected that the mine production could rise by as much as 10 percent in 2014, and Peru’s energy and mines minister, Jorge Merino, has projected a 17-percent increase in copper production alone thanks to several new projects and also the the expected increase of foreign investments in the mining industry.

Container Island Resorts – America’s New Dubai

Did you know that there are over 4000 oil rigs in the Gulf of Mexico that will be decommissioned within the next century. These oil rigs occupy approximately 80 million square feet of area in the ocean. Basically the only way to remove them is to blow them into oblivion which would cost millions of dollars and destroy a major part of the Gulf’s aquatic life. What if these oil rigs could be used in another way?

The idea of turning the oil rigs into luxurious hotel resorts was already presented in 2009 by Morris Architects who also won the top prize in a hospitality design design contest with this concept. This idea also introduces an application for shipping containers.

The idea is to prefabricate hotel pods off-site out of shipping containers and transport them into the oil rigs with cargo ships. These new island resorts are also been referred as America’s Dubai. The BLDGBLOG site has put it also to a poetic perspective by comparing the resorts as the Kalevala of Abandoned Oil Rigs.

Prefabricating and transporting the hotels onto the rigs a relatively simple procedure. The challenges are more related to maintenance and business side. How to ensure security on the resort, how to handle stormy weather conditions, how to price them and how to maintain a steady flow of customers?

Retro style of telling time

Copper tubing furniture

TJ Volonis, a talented Brooklyn artist/designer, makes sculptures and furniture just out of copper tubes and pipes. His creative business started quite unintentionally. His roommate moved out and left him a rickety coffee table. He didn’t have money that time so he decided to knock the legs off and use copper tubes for building a new base. The same period of time he was volunteering for a benefit art auction , he bought materials from Home Depot, drafted and created a design and entered it under a pseudonym. It won the first place in its category, attracted attention of people so he was encouraged to continue with his art.

A lot of his inspiration comes from New York City and its industrial infrastructure. He likes looking at train tracks, bridges or plumbing through his artistic lens and beyond that utility he sees something beautiful. According to his words, copper has its own sense of expression.

He left some of the copper tubes and pipes oxidize and it creates a very honey-brown color over time. He seals some of the piece with lacquer right away to preserve the scorch marks. He looks at copper tubing as a co-creator of his work.

Aj keď nie som veľký fanúšik klimatizácie, v niektorých častiach sveta by som sa bez nej zrejme nezaobišla. Niet žiadnych pochýb, že vynález klimatizácie sa považuje za jeden z najdôležitejších v 20.storočí, ktorý ovplyvnil svet, v dobrom aj v zlom. Napriek faktu, že klimatizácia nám potichu hučí v pozadí, veľa toho o nej nevieme.

Základné fakty o klimatizácii

Prvá moderná klimatizácia bola vyvinutá Willisom Carrierom v roku 1902 pre nakladateľskú spoločnosť v Brooklyne. Teplota a vlhkosť sa udržovali na nízkych hodnotách, aby sa papier nescvrkol alebo nezväčšil. Klimatizácia prvotne nebola určená pre komfort ľudí.

Každá klimatizácia sa skladá zo 4 častí : čerpadlo, výparník, kondenzátor a expanzný ventil. Väčšina klimatizácií je na začiatku procesu len surový materiál vo forme oceľových plátov. Keď tieto oceľové pláty putujú do výroby, režú sa, formujú či ohýnajú do užitočných tvarov. Klimatizácia sa vyrába z pozinkovanej ocele, ktorá ju chráni pred koróziou.

I am not a big fan of air-conditioning but in some parts of the world you just can’t survive without it. There is no doubt that the invention of air-conditioning is considered to be one of the most important achievements in the twentieth century and has hugely impacted the world.
