WU XING, THE FIVE ELEMENTS

In ancient China, Taoist developed a profound understanding of life based on observation of nature which called Wu Xing or the Five Elements. The Elements represents transformation that occurs around us which interact and relate to each others. Despite of Five Elements concept is old, but the concept can be applied to our modern life.

1

Wu Xing (Chinesepinyin: wǔ xíng) also known as the Five Elements is a fivefold concept that many traditional Chinese fields used to explain a wide array of phenomena. This concept of Five Elements was used to describe interactions and relationships between phenomena, such as Feng shui, astrology, traditional Chinese medicine, music, military strategy, and martial arts. The Five Elements are Wood ( mù), Fire( huǒ), Earth ( tǔ), Metal ( jīn), and Water ( shuǐ).

2

Wood Element is yang/masculine character which represents the pioneer that can do strategic plan and directing. One quality of Wood Element is leadership which needs to be strong and flexible, like bamboo. The leaders that can take charge, determine a plan of action, and always seek to grow.

3

Fire Element is yang/masculine character which represents the wizard that can do socializing and marketing stuffs. This Fire Element associated with the qualities of dynamism, strength and persistence. It provides warmth, enthusiasm, and creativity which match with the marketing person.

4

Earth Element is a balance of both yin and yang. It represents the mediator which associated with patience, thoughtfulness, practically, hard work, and stability. The Earth Element seeks to draw all things together in order to bring harmony and stability. This element represents human resources.

5

Metal Element is is ying/feminine character which represents the alchemist which is organizing and judging. This element represents the minerals, crystals, and gems of the world. This element is the breath of life. This element associated with the qualities of metal which are unyieldingness, rigidity, persistence, strength, and determination.

6

Water Element is ying/feminine character which represents the philosopher and thinker. Water Element associated with intelligence and wisdom, flexibility, softness and pliancy. Water can be fluid and weak, but it can also be a great power when it floods and overwhelms the land.

5-elements

Every element has its own strengths. These elements are actually related to each other because it can control one another. For example, fire controls metal because it can melts metal into liquid. Water controls fire because water extinguished a fire. Earth controls water because earth absorbs water. Wood controls earth because it holds the earth together and can also break it apart. Metal controls wood because metal can cuts down trees into wood.

7

This Five Elements represents the harmony of life. When a family, work team, or any organizations that have all of this five elements within its member, it is said that they would enjoy a lot of harmony. For example, in working place, if you are a leader of a company and are looking to hire people to work with you, it would be good to find people of signs that are “controlled” by you. If you are Fire sign, you would find it best to employ people of a Metal Sign because like it is said before that fire controls metal.

Chinese conceptual is interesting, including this Five Elements. This may not be true but believe it or not it may be true too, so you can considered it when you want to hire people and working with people in your organizations.

Metal is important element which also included in Five Chinese Elements. Metal represents the minerals which are rigid, strong, and determine. Scandinavian architects don’t use just wood

A metal-clad house

Wooden cabins and houses are typical for Scandinavian architecture. It perfectly fits into beautiful nature, surrounded by forest, as in a fairy tale. But Stockholm-based architecture firm Tham & Videgård came up with another kind of project. They designed a modern metal-clad House Husarö.

This house was built for client’s growing family and it is located on island in an outer Stockholm. It is placed high on the landscape surrounded by pines, so that it has overlook view of the sea.

The landscape

Starting point for the house was the sea view, the flat and smooth bedrock and light conditions. Tham & Videgård had a modest and relatively low budget, so they approached tectonic rationality to support a specific spatial structure. The pitched roof is clad in folded black metal sheets. Three sides of the building have sliding doors opening out to the views of the landscape.

Inside, the house is divided into two levels. A communal open area with the living room and kitchen on the ground floor and then upper private level with the bedrooms and a playroom. There is a contrast between dark metal facade and a light-colored interior.  A skylight that runs along the ridge of the roof on the upper level underscores the vertical space and enhances the experience of seclusion.

Forget Home Furnishings, IKEA Enters The E-Bike Market

IKEA has certainly surprised us with many clever home-furnishing solutions. Most importantly, IKEA, with its roots in the super “green” country of Sweden, could not leave its homecountry’s highly socially conscious citizens disappointed. When it comes to act environmetally friendly, IKEA comes right up in the top list worldwide as leader of clean technology. In fact, IKEA has big goals for 2020 that includes a plan to obtain 100% of the energy it consumes in its stores and buildings from clean energy and to grow more wood than it uses.

Plastic bags were far gone six years ago, CFLs and LEDs were introduced as replacement for high-energy consuming incandescent light bulbs back in 2010, affordable home solar panels were recently made available in the UK, a number of electric car stations were installed at stores across the world and now IKEA has entered the electric bike market.

Yes, e-bike FOLKVÄNLIG can be found in two IKEA’s retail stores located in Vienna, Austria. Still in its inception phase, the e-bike is expected to become viral and shortly reach out to many different stores. The electric bike’s design has already received various awards at the Taipei Cycle Show, Eurobike and the IF Design Award.

FOLKVÄNLIG in Swedish means ‘user- friendly’, which is probably what IKEA is trying to address here with its sleek e-bike that could take you anywhere within a distance of 60 to 70km, aided by a powerful electric motor of 250Watt that could get you a total pedal-assisted range up to 45mi/72km per charge.

The e-bike also features an easy rechargeable system to its removable in-frame lithium-ion battery pack that takes about five hours to recharge, as well as a Shimano transmission that provides six different driving modes.

Should it prove successful, IKEA’s FOLKVÄNLIG e-bike must also come in a foldable variant, which gives the market even more room for growth.

Architectural Triumphs With Galvanized Steel

Corrugated and sheet metals such as galvanized steel have come a long way in the architectural and construction communities from when they were simply a strong and effective material used as roofing. It has come to the point now where they can be the feature of a home or building and used both inside and out.

image

This idea of galvanized steel as a universal building material is shown below where the house features has used it for both a roofing material and as exterior wall cladding. This industrial appearing material, when combined with the natural aesthetic of wood creates a juxtaposition between man and nature, especially given the lush backdrop of rural Australia.

image

From an interior perspective there is an increasing trend to use both corrugated, flat and shaped galvanized steel for both ceilings and walls. The remarkable example below featured in the master bedroom of  a modern home show how the metallic surface of galvanized steel can add a touch of modernity to a design, with the corrugated sheeting offering a texture rarely seen in the interior of a home.

image

The versatility of this material is undeniable, with designers stretching their imagination to previously-thought impossible lengths. As is witnessed in the examples below; the ability to bend, shape, curve and erect this material at extreme pitches can lead to some outstanding design possibilities. The home on the left features a nearly 100% external composition of pre-painted corrugated galvanized steel proving the residents with high bush-fire protection, energy efficiency as well as a remarkable aesthetic!

image

In contrast to these curves seen above the design featured below presents an opposing dynamic of this material. With its sheer pitched sides, long straight lengths and intense angles it is hard not to appreciate the capabilities this material offers to architects and the remarkable results that are left for the eye to enjoy.
