2017 RANGE ROVER EVOQUE CONVERTIBLE: CHAMPAGNE WISHES AND CROSSCAB DREAMS

Nissan’s Murano CrossCabriolet propelled the world’s first—to the extent we know—car survey written as a Homeric tribute. Dearest by around eight individuals (half of whom may or won’t not work at Car and Driver), the CrossCab was a business frustration, vanishing after the 2014 model year. Fortunately, the upstanding Brits at Land Rover apparently have persuaded their Indian supervisors that the CrossCabriolet passed on in light of the fact that it basically wasn’t sufficiently upmarket. Notwithstanding its real thinking, the organization was permitted to go ahead with the Evoque convertible, which initially showed up as an idea at the 2012 Geneva automobile fair.

Witness, sweethearts of the droptop SUV, the Evoque convertible underway appearance, complete with a rooftop that brings down itself in 18 seconds at velocities of up to 30 mph. In its nose, the Evoque conveys the same 240-hp turbocharged four-banger as it has since its 2012 dispatch. The motor is dashed to the same ZF nine-speed programmed transmission it obtained for 2014, going through an AWD framework nearly relatedto the one in the up and coming Ford Focus RS, less the Ford’s hoon-couraging “float mode.”

The top lies flush with the beltline when stowed, while out back, a trunklet reminiscent of the Mini Cooper convertible’s gives 8.9 cubic feet of capacity. A ski go through is accessible. In advance, the two-entryway convertible components Jaguar Land Rover’s new InControl Touch Pro infotainment framework and a 10.2-inch screen from which to work it.

What amount of will this outside CUV-ing cost a man? A fundamental SE Dynamic package–equipped model will run $51,470 to begin, which is generally $10,000 more than Nissan requested its entrance in the fragment.

“THE FUTURE OF METAL IN AUTOMOTIVE INDUSTRY”

As the automotive market looks for innovative ways to meet future Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) requirements, which will nearly double the average light vehicle fuel economy to 54.5 mpg by 2025, the North American steel industry continues to invest in advanced materials and manufacturing technologies that have led to the introduction of a wide variety of new automotive steels. The steel industry is meeting this need through the development of new advanced high-strength steel (AHSS) grades, whose unique metallurgical properties and manufacturability enable the automotive industry to affordably meet increasingly stringent requirements.

Studies show that AHSS steel grades are growing faster in new automotive applications than aluminum and plastic—steel’s main competitors. Each year, new car models are introduced using lighter-weight, higher-strength steel components that provide a cost-effective answer to the demand for increased safety and fuel economy.

AHSS1

“We have been able to develop advanced high-strength steels, which are the most sophisticated steels available today for automotive applications.” – John P. Surma, chairman and chief executive officer, United States Steel Corporation and director, AISI Board of Directors”.

Recent projects, such as “FutureSteelVehicle”, a WorldAutoSteel study released in May 2011, which introduced more than 20 AHSS grades, show that the latest steel grades, combined with innovative processing methods and design optimization techniques, enable steel to achieve a 39 percent mass reduction in many applications, virtually equivalent to mass reduction levels achieved by aluminum. There are several other examples of AHSS technologies, including the front lower control arm that is the same weight as the aluminum version at one-third less cost.

Mass reduction with AHSS not only conserves material but helps reduce greenhouse gas emissions over the full lifecycle of the vehicle, including manufacturing, driving and recycling. Life cycle assessment data shows that steel, which makes up nearly 60 percent of the average North American vehicle, generates fewer manufacturing emissions than other automotive body materials. Vehicles using high-strength steels provide a significant reduction in driving emissions, as well as total lifecycle emissions.

AHSS2

If currently available AHSS were applied throughout the present U.S. automotive fleet, greenhouse gas emissions from automobiles would be reduced by approximately 12 percent—an amount greater than the emissions generated by the entire American steel industry today. This reduction in emissions is already underway as automotive designers around the world use increasing amounts of AHSS in their vehicles.

THE NEW TOYOTA WOODEN CAR DESIGN

Toyota just announced that their new wooden car is going to Milan for Design Week in April. There are many things to love about it, starting with the electric drive train. The little two-seater is only ten feet long and 4′-10 wide, barely three feet tall. And there is no word about air bags or crush zones.

Toyota also is building it using traditional joinery techniques “Okuriari” that don’t use screws or nails.

In the press release, Kenji Tsuji, the Toyota engineer overseeing development of the Setsuna, said of his process:

“We evaluated various ways to express the concept and selected different lumber materials for specific applications, such as Japanese cedar for the exterior panels and Japanese birch for the frame. We also paid particular attention to the sizes and arrangements of individual parts.”

But what is most interesting is Toyota’s attempt at bringing back the attachment to cars that people used to have.

The decision to use wood—a material that is durable yet prone to change over time—reflects Toyota’s efforts to give form to the developing relationships between people and their cars. The Setsuna symbolizes how cars undergo a gradual transformation over the years, as if absorbing the aspirations, memories, and emotions of multiple generations of a family. With the Setsuna concept, Toyota is expressing the notion that, as a family accrues time and experiences together with their car, lovingly caring for it and passing it on to the next generation, that car will acquire a new type of value that only the members of that family can appreciate.

The car’s name—Setsuna, meaning “moment” in Japanese—was chosen to reflect that people experience precious, fleeting moments together with their cars. Toyota believes that, over time, these collective moments make their cars irreplaceable to their owners, and in case your family doesn’t keep good records, the car actually has a 100 year meter, that will keep time over generations”.

I do hope that they put it into production; it’s the perfect little car for the garages in all of our new big wood towers.

“CLOSER THAN WE THINK”

In the 50’s and early 60’s, there was a wonderful newspaper series, “Closer Than We Think”, drawn by Arthur Radebaugh. In 1958, he predicted that we would soon be driving solar powered electric cars. And also, look at the impact of the electric car and how it will cause the next oil crisis.

For years, everyone has worried about Peak Oil, where it was assumed that the cost of oil production would keep going up and up until nobody could afford it anymore. Then fracking and oil sands and deepwater drilling brought new supplies on stream and we got an oil price crash instead. Tom Randall, a Bloomberg’s writer predicts that the electric car will cause the next oil crisis. They don’t have to take over the entire market to do so; just enough to tip supply up over demand like fracking did.electricCAR2

“With all good technologies, there comes a time when buying the alternative no longer makes sense. Think smartphones in the past decade, color TVs in the 1970s, or even gasoline cars in the early 20th century. Predicting the timing of these shifts is difficult, but when it happens, the whole world changes. It looks like the 2020’s will be the decade of the electric cars”.

They predict that “By 2020, some electric cars and SUVs will be faster, safer, cheaper, and more convenient than their gasoline counterparts.” Extrapolating from last year’s growth rate (and Tesla’s forecasts), they calculate that by 2023 electric cars could displace 2 million barrels of oil per day. That’s how much new production came on-stream and caused the 2014 oil crisis that continues to glut the world in cheap oil. Others (including oil companies) predict a much slower take-up of electric cars, which would delay the crisis. But it does seem inevitable.

They also point out some other benefits

Electric cars will reduce the cost of battery electricCAR3storage and help store intermittent sun and wind power. In the move toward a cleaner grid, electric vehicles and renewable power create a mutually beneficial circle of demand.

Of course if they are right, then a lot of countries are placing some sketchy bets on pipelines and oil infrastructure.

THE NEW WAY OF BUILD CARS!

Aluminum builds a better vehicle. Aluminum’s use in autos and commercial vehicles is accelerating because it offers the fastest, safest, most environmentally friendly and cost-effective way to increase performance, boost fuel economy and reduce emissions while maintaining or improving safety and durability. From mass-market vehicles like the Ford F-150 to luxury cars like Audi, Mercedes Benz and Land Rover, aluminum is increasingly the “material of choice” for automakers thanks to its strength and environmental advantages. The Aluminum Association’s Aluminum Transportation Group (ATG) communicates the benefits of aluminum in transportation through research programs and related outreach activities. For more information on how aluminum is driving the cars of today and tomorrow.

bg1

Performance benefits
Because aluminum is lighter, it allows automakers to increase dent resistance—they can make body panels thicker while still lowering weight. And a lower weight vehicle has better acceleration, better braking, and better handling. In addition, lighter vehicles can haul and tow more because the engine isn’t carrying unneeded weight.

Environmental benefits
Nearly 90 percent of automotive aluminum scrap—more than a half-million tons a year—is recovered and recycled. To place this in perspective: Recycling 1 ton of aluminum saves the energy equivalent of 21 barrels of oil. The environmental wins continue: An aluminum-intensive vehicle can achieve up to a 20 percent reduction in total lifecycle energy consumption and up to a 17 percent reduction in CO2 emissions.

The history of aluminum in cars
A growth market today, aluminum has been a key material for automakers since the beginning. The first sports car featuring an aluminum body was unveiled at the Berlin International Motor Show in 1899. Two years later, the first engine with aluminum parts was developed by Carl Benz.Following World War II, aluminum had become inexpensive enough to be considered for use in mass-produced vehicles. A breakthrough occurred in 1961 when the British Land Rover company produced V-8 engine blocks made with aluminum cylinders. From there, aluminum automobile parts gained a foothold in wheels and transmission casings and then moved into cylinder heads and suspension joints. This infinitely recyclable metal is now the leading material for use in powertrain and wheel applications and continues to gain market share in hoods, trunks, doors and bumpers—and complete vehicle structures.

ALUMINIUM – THE BATTERY OF THE FUTURE

Why do we like so much aluminium at Shanghai Metal Corporation? This is a very easy question. Because aluminium is a very versatile material that can be employed for a wide range of purpose. For instance, according to some specialized websites in the near future aluminum may be used in the production of various electronic devices batteries. The researchers of the University of California at Stanford have announced the development of aluminum-based batteries promising better performance and a lower impact on the environment compared to current models made of lithium.

batterie-alluminio

What is more special about the aluminium batteries is that, not only their life would be significantly higher than conventional batteries (7,500 versus 1,000 cycles), but especially we should be able to fully recharge them in just a minute. Moreover, the aluminium batteries could be applied to a high number of devices such as smartphones, electric cars and laptops.

Untitled design

Since aluminum is very less expensive than lithium, a further advantageous feature of the aluminium battery would be its lower cost of production. Furthermore, aluminum guarantees the total absence of any risk of fire. The environmental benefits are obvious. A smartphone battery  that takes only one minute to charge results in a considerable decrease in energy waste.

Silent War — Aluminum Alloy or Steel?

“Aluminum or steel?” This question always confused cars engineer.

As you know, the call for environmental protection and energy saving is increasing now, which makes automobile manufacturers have to seek more solid, more frivolous raw material for making cars, thus, the war between aluminum and steel breaks out.

Attack from aluminum

Aluminum not only reduce the weight of the half, but has better corrosion resistance compared with steel, which makes aluminum get more favor of automotive engineers.

Fight back from steel

The appearance of aluminum alloy for automobile steel makes steel supplier under pressure, so they decided to unit and take action to combat the threat of aluminum.

1Photo from marcegaglia

In 1995, 32 international iron and steel manufacturers join together and put forward the concept of “super light carbon steel body”. The body made by this kind of high strength steel has the thinner and lighter structure. Actually, lightweight body exactly  help improve the sales situation of high strength steel. Manufactures also announced that, at the same time, this material has another big benefit——making the car get higher scores in the crash tests of Euro NCAP—New Car Assessment Program!

The technical obstacle of aluminum alloy

Except Audi and Jaguar, most automotive manufacturer has little interested in the whole aluminum body because of its higher price, thus, manufactory like BMW take mixed form in body manufacture.

COPPER, CORE ELEMENT OF HYBRID AND ELECTRIC CARS

With the development of sustainable businesses and social corporate responsibility, many companies are trying to change their products in order to make them more eco-friendly. The automotive industry has been at the heart of these changes do to its tremendous impact on the environment and the growing demand for vehicles around the world.

Having been criticized for being a the main source of pollution , many manufacturers have developed new motors that are less pollutant but while  trying to keep a high level of performance and satisfy the clients needs.
Ricardo , an American company that provides engineering solutions and consulting services and intelligent vehicles to its client deals with the dilemma every day.  Chris Domin Ricardo’s chief engineer , explains how the integration of wireless technologies, telematics, and electronics is used to improve the efficiency of vehicles. He emphasizes on the fact that copper is the main elements to the good functioning of this technology . He says “This technology relies on a number of different components, and copper is critical because it’s the glue that ties it all together”.  Its high conductivity and adaptability properties offer many advantages in order to improve the motors performance and comply with the high technological level of hybrid engines.

When a dream comes true – a flying car

We have everything these days – pocket computers, smartphones, smart watches, robots. Just one thing is still missing…a flying car!

“Mark my word : A combination airplane and motorcar is coming. You may smile, but it will come.” Henry Ford, 1940

Slovakian company Aeromobil made people’s dream come true and they are much closer to introduce this car to the world than anybody else. Štefan Klein, a Slovak man graduated from the University of Technology in Slovakia, has devoted 20 years of his life for working on his prototype of Aeromobil 3.0.

5-flying.jpg

Aeromobil is a flying car that can use existing  infrastructure already created for planes and cars. It fits in a standard parking space, it can tank at any gas station, it is fully accustomed to road traffic and it can perfectly take off and land at any airport all over the world.  Amazing!

This Aeromobil is suitable for two passengers and can fly up to 430 miles on standard 91 octane gasoline. On the road wings of this flying car fold behind the cockpit, so there is no problem with parking. In the air it can reach a top speed of 124 mph, on the road it is a bit slower and can reach a top speed of 100 mph and a driving range of 300 mph.

“We want to make personal transportation exciting, more efficient and sustainable. With ever more cars on the roads and ever more crowded airports, traveling is no longer what it used to be,” Klein stated. The latest design was tested this week and it is ready for the Pioneers Festival in Vienna in Austria, held on Oct. 29, 2014.

This Aeromobil is super stylish, comfortable and combines the performance of a sports car with qualities of an “ultralight”. Now I am just curious how much this flying car will be 🙂

Shanghai Metal Corporation is devoted to new trends and offers a wide range of metal, steel and other products used in automotive industry. For more details visit our website or send us inquiry.
