CHINA STRIDES INTO THE WORLD OF EXPERIMENTAL PHYSICS

China is planning the construction of a particle accelerator seven times more powerful than the CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC), which discovered the Higgs boson.

The collider will form part a 100km loop (3 times more powerful than the LHC) and will allow for deviations in readings to produce accurate data for theoretical physicist to use in their hypotheses.

The Chinese particle accelerator differs from the LHC in that it only produces Higgs bosons, making a ‘cleaner’ environment for data analysis.

Whilst the project is indeed ambitious, the pace of construction is impressive – with estimates for completion of design in 2018 and work commencing in 2020.

How Do You Lengthen A Ship? Cut It In Half Of Course

Have you heard of the infinite chocolate theory? See below for details:

infinitechocgif1

Well that’s not quite what these engineers had in mind, but close. It can be expensive to build an entirely new ship – maybe that’s why one cruise line decided to recycle an old one. Italian line MSC Cruises has decided to cut its smallest ship Armonia in half and stick a new part in.

Over several days, the 60,000-ton vessel was cut in two and a new 79ft-long, nine-deck-high section containing 193 extra cabins was slowly slotted into place. The work that took place in the Fincantieri ship1shipyard in Palermo, Sicily, increases the ship’s length to 902ft – longer than the main Canary Wharf tower in London is high – and makes space for a total of 2,679 passengers. The upgrade will take nine weeks and cost £40million – and then be repeated on three other MSC ships, Sinfonia, Opera and Lirica. The new Armonia is due to sail from the yard on November 17 – fully watertight, of course.

DIY Paper Circuit That Maps The Sky and Space

In our recent posts we have seen the most innovative eco-friendly marketing campaigns. The WaterLess Levi’s jeans that uses the minimum amount of water in their manufacturing process, or the newest McDonald’s Stockholm “exchange-recycled-cans- for-free-burgers” campaign, or another brilliant way to adhere to naked greener Coke cans.

The efforts to confront some of the world’s greatest challenges, however, do not exclusively take place in business – but also in university education. The HCIL (Human-Computer Interaction Lab) at the University of Maryland designed and created an interactive experience that combines bits and atoms, or virtual and physical: StarryNight.

star1Primarily designed as an educational tool for kids, StarryNight is a project that emphasizes the Maker/DIY culture by which the kids learn the basics about astronomy and electronic circuits “by doing” in a social environment. The way StarryNight works is very simple, basic materials like copper tape, coin cells, LED lights, copper foil and some black paper are put together to make stars shine and shape different constellations. One big huge circuit which has all the stars (blue LEDs) is connected in parallel in this open and closed circuit, where each of the four constellations has a separate circuit with green LEDs to show the edges of the constellations.

star6

This DIY paper circuit board is great to encourage invention and constructive learning, and more importantly, it does not require big bucks to be built unlike the very luxury $5700 mechanical Caran d’Ache’s Caelograph pen that charts the stars and constellations at any given time and on any date as a result of miniaturization, ingenious engineering and talent of an astronomer.

star8

So if you wish to build a StarryNight for inexpensive collection of material, you will need:

  • Lots of Copper Tape
  • About six 3V coin cells
  • About 60 LEDs
  • Copper Foil (since its conductive both sides, it was used to activate switches)
  • Soldering Iron

Shanghai Metal Corporation offers a wide range of copper rivets in varying sizes and forms, widely used in the manufacturing of art sculptures such as the Water<Less jeans in London. Thor’s Hammer: The Science

Thor’s hammer isn’t real, unless you believe recent Swedish news that Thor’s hammer has been found in Stockholm. No, only in the hearts and minds of comic book and movie fans does it exist. But, assuming it did, would anyone be able to lift it?

thors hammer1

Legend says only the worthy can lift it, and depending on which source you read, it’s made from a dying star. If that is the case, then it would have to weigh as much as a herd of 300-billion elephants according to Neil deGrasse Tyson. If you’re wondering, the average weight of a male African bush elephant is a bit more than 12,000 pounds, so about 4.6 trillion metric tons. Watch a video by Vsauce3 which nicely explains the concept:

If we were to follow the legend that Thor’s hammer was made from metal from Asgard, it would only weighed 42.3 pounds. That is far less than 4.6 trillion metric tons.

ThorHammer4

Most likely if it was made from existing metals it would be made of carbon steel.  Die steel refers to a variety of carbon and alloy steels that are particularly well-suited to be made into tools. Their suitability comes from their distinctive hardness, resistance to abrasion, their ability to hold a cutting edge, and/or their resistance to deformation at elevated temperatures (red-hardness).

carbondiesteelforhammers

Shanghai Metal manufactures the carbon steel in hammers. Die Steel is mainly used for manufacture of cold-work dies with high abrasive resistance and small shock load. SMC is delighted to provide wide range of alloy steel to the customers; we also accept customizations according to your requirements. Can You Do A 360 Degree Loop On A Swing Set?

The urban legend we all remember from our childhood was that It is possible to do a chain-straight 360° loop on a swingset. Did you ever try it? Well Myth Busters set out to find out if it was true. For chained swings, apparently this is a myth.

mythbusters

Under one’s own power it is impossible to do a chain-straight 360° loop on a school yard swing set. With help of other pushers, it is possible, although highly difficult, to do a full circle without the chain being straight. A person would need a rocket strapped to himself to do it. A dummy was set up in such a manner; the rocket was able to propel it in a chain-straight 360° loop, but the setup would be too dangerous with a real person.

swing1

However, it is possible to do a 360° loop on a rigid-arm swingset. A seventh generation circus performer confirmed the myth by doing a 360° loop while Tory, Kari and Grant observed. The others were not able to do the loop, as it consumes a lot of energy. So your childhood fantasies were not disproved, and just maybe, the youthful dream could be fulfilled…

Shanghai Metal manufactures value added galvanized steel used in swingsets. We are the international manufacturer and supplier for three galvanized lines of hot dip galvanized steel. The monthly output for each line is approximately 5000 ton. Our large monthly production and advanced processing facilities promise the quick delivery and superior quality of products for our customers. How A Tiny Anchor Can Hold A Whole Ship

When you think about it, it seems strange that such a tiny object defies an entire ships direction. Like these party tricks below, so many of these physics tricks seem impossible until you see them.

physicstrickgif

Something to do with friction maybe?

physicstrick3My mind says he used glue, but my heart says its science

anchor3

So how does an anchor work?

The main thing about an anchor’s function is that it works against a force exerted against it by the ship, via the anchor’s chain, in a horizontal direction.

For an anchor to hold, you need to veer out enough chain so that the last part of it lies on the ground. Rule of thumb for small boats is at least depth times five for anchor chain.

ship2

So a ship does not lie above its anchor but downstream or downwind of it (assuming only one anchor). To pluck the anchor out of the ground, you take the boat above the anchor, ideally (if it is not snagged) it cannot hold against a vertical force.

So there you are: there is method in science’s madness. The physics behind anchors results in amazing things.

Shanghai Metal manufactures anchors and other mooring equipment. Having been certified by ABS, LR, GL, DNV, NK, BV, KR, RINA, RS, CCS, Shanghai Metal can ensure the high-quality standards of all our anchors and other marine products. With a 36,000 ton production capacity, we guarantee complete and on-time delivery regardless of the size of your order. To find out more, please visit our websiteLinkedInTwitter, and Facebook.
